Not at the Dinner Table / Current social/political climate
« on: August 16, 2018, 10:49:09 PM »
Can't help but notice that the current social/political climate is pretty ****ing grim and divisive. Everybody's at each-other's throats at all times, and it seems like people are moving further towards polarization. I think that, even given TMK's generally meager forum population as of late, this is why this sub-board hasn't been posted in since late 2016. Do other people find this significantly worrying, or is this just a rough patch that'll die down when Trump and his similar right-wing populist movements fade?

Not at the Dinner Table / Trump won
« on: November 11, 2016, 01:03:33 PM »
So lads and ladettes, uh...Donald "ban Muslims from entering the United States until we figure out what the hell is going on" Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States of America on January 20, 2017. The man who time and time again demonstrated himself to be an incompetent idiot incapable of leading the free world will be doing so for at least (god forbid it goes beyond that) four years.

On top of that, his victory legitimizes the evil alt right's rise to the mainstream. The guy wants ****ing Steve Bannon as chief of staff, the guy who ran alt-right scum hive Breitbart (which hosts articles by the loathsome Milo Yiannopoulos) until he became the CEO of Trump's campaign. Don't worry, his downright idiotic opinions on climate change will be reflected in Trump's White House.

What do we do now?

Pics!

"My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dad's company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of 'junk' he was supposed to throw out."

Only 200 of these were ever made. Amazing discovery, huh? I really wanna see what's on that cartridge, but he doesn't wanna **** up the prototype by plugging stuff into it and potentially shorting it out. Ah, well...

Forum thread where the guy answers questions on it

Not at the Dinner Table / IT'S OFFICIAL: TERRORISM WORKS!
« on: December 17, 2014, 06:55:48 PM »
You might've heard about the comedy film The Interview, that movie about assassinating Kim Jong-un that probably had a lot of laughs at the North Korean government's expense. Welp, after some threats to carry out terrorist attacks on movie theaters that were planning to show the movie, many big cinema chains backed out of showing it, and thus, Sony more or less had no choice but to cancel the premiere.

Would the movie even been worth watching? I don't know. In fact, there's a pretty high possibility that it sucks. But I do know that a group known as TOTALLY NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE NORTH KOREAN GOVERNMENT, GUYS! the "Guardians of Peace" hacked Sony and demanded that they pull the plug on "the movie of terrorism", then they warned of attacks on movie theaters showing it (as well as the premiere in New York), telling people to "remember the 11th of September 2001", and now the movie's more or less dead. 44 million bucks down the drain.

Terrorism works!

Although...it is a comedy movie about killing a real person. Many would argue the movie's in bad taste, and they may be right, but I personally see no reason to give a [dukar] about Kim Jong-un's feelings. Does he give a [dukar] about the insane human rights violations his government's continuing to commit upon their own people on a daily basis? At least we got to see Team America: World Police with no problems.

Site Discussion / Can't connect to #TMK?

It keeps saying the connection timed out for me when I try to connect to the TMK chatroom. What gives, yo?

Whoa, my.
Quote from: Shigeru Miyamoto
“[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland,” Miyamoto says, in a quote transcribed by CVG.

“Their attitude is, ‘okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.’ It’s kind of a passive attitude they’re taking, and to me it’s kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games].”

What does TMK think?

Video Game Chat / NEW NINTENDO IP! Code Name: STEAM
« on: June 11, 2014, 08:12:18 PM »
Code Name: STEAM is a new IP from Nintendo. It's a 3DS game, and by the way, STEAM stands for Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace.

As of June 11, 2014, 10:10PM EST, we know that it's a heavily steampunk themed strategy game with third person shooter-taken action elements made by Intelligent Systems. As the title would suggest, there is alien battling. The art style is "a Japanese take on Jack Kirby" and looks like Silver Age American comics. There are American themes, including eagles and stuff involved in attacks, and a soundtrack that "has both 19th century string-type instruments and rock music for the steam punk". There's also multiplayer, including online play. We won't be able to actually see it until the Treehouse demos, which, as of this topic's creation, are tomorrow.

Have this leaked image!

I've also seen two leaked screenshots, but I won't post them out of fear of legal retribution.

Sounds like an incredibly cool game.

Video Game Chat / E Tree 2K14
« on: June 01, 2014, 04:14:41 PM »
My E3 hype building up already, is yours? Let's discuss E3 hype, what we want to/expect to see, and when it happens, we'll have our reactions and stuff.

I'm gonna expect Zelda U (which is confirmed anyways), some Smash 4 reveals, and more on Bayo 2. I really, really want to see some more of X and Hyrule Warriors as well.

Here's an interesting little thing I stumbled on today. It's the "Social Attitude Test". It tries to gauge your attitudes/opinions on stuff. To give you an idea of what I mean, here's my results.

Post 'em! And please don't start a flame war...

Mario Chat / Character voices
« on: March 02, 2014, 12:06:20 AM »
This is probably a stupid thing to make a topic about (Mario games are known for pretty much everything but the voice acting, and I can't think of any Mario games I've played outside of Super Mario Sunshine that even have fully spoken dialogue.), and I'm not good at explaining subtle differences, but whatever.

I've noticed that the voices of Mario characters are rather inconsistent. Mario, Luigi, and Wario's voices are more or less consistent, and just feature subtle differences between games. Other characters, like Peach or Toad, can have radically variable voices between games (although Toad's voice has been pretty much the same in every game since Luigi's Mansion).

Mario sounds a bit crackly in certain voice samples from Super Mario 64. ("Yah!" "Wah!" in particular) and his voice is generally a bit lower than in later games. I could perhaps blame both of those on the compression of his voice samples to fit in the cart. In Mario Kart 64, Mario's voice is awesome, all elegent sounding and stuff. Hard to explain what I mean, but this is probably my favorite incarnation of Mario's voice. In the original Smash Bros, Mario's voice sounds mostly like it does in 64. In Melee, his voice sounded somewhere between his voice in the previously mentioned N64 games and his voice in Sunshine. In Sunshine (which is my second favorite incarnation of Mario's voice, by the way), he sounded a bit different than in all of those, and probably sounds more like he does today. Most of the differences I hear in these voices are very subtle and hard to describe, and I'm sorry about that. They're there, though. In the Galaxy games, Mario's voice sounds a bit more...I dunno, like it's cracking I guess? You can hear it in the game when jumping and stuff, but it's also noticeable even in the little "Disc Channel" selection thing. It's a lot easier to hear the differences between his Galaxy voice and his pre-Galaxy voice. Maybe Charles Martinet's voice is fatiguing from doing that super high-pitched voice?

In earlier games (Like the first two Smash Bros games and I THINK the N64 Mario Party games, but I've never played any Mario Party before 4), Luigi essentially just sounded like a higher pitched version of Mario's voice. It should be noted, though, that this is inconsistent, because Luigi was given a completely different voice from that in the localization of Mario Kart 64 that's a lot closer to his current voice. Luigi's voice was at its best in the American (More than likely European too) version of Mario Kart 64. Luigi's voice got more "crackly" (I guess that'd be the word to use?) in Luigi's Mansion. It still sounds like his MK64 voice, more or less. Nowadays, Luigi's voice sounds "wimpier", which I guess is an attempt to play up his "constantly scared" character trait he earned from Luigi's Mansion. It's really noticeable in Brawl.

I'm not going into detail with a bunch of links and stuff for everyone else, sorry. But anyways, it seems like Wario sounds a bit less "sinister" (that's a bad way of putting it, but oh well) than he was in earlier games. Other characters have underwent much less subtle changes. Princess Peach's voice went from this, to this, to her current voice, thanks to cast changes (from Leslie Swan, to Jen Taylor, to Sam Kelly) resulting in completely different voices. And I gotta say...I like Jen Taylor's Peach voice the best. Toad started out simply sounding like a shouting child, but now he has this weird, high pitched raspy kinda thing going on. Bowser usually used voice samples of roars up until Sunshine, where he got a voice. Bowser's voice in Sunshine is very widely criticized, but I personally really liked it. It was deep and "evil" sounding enough to sound believable as Bowser, but he also sounded really goofy at the same time, and I liked that. In that cutscene where Mario confronts him, he almost sounds like Brian Doyle-Murray. Everyone else hates it though. His voice in Galaxy and onward is a deeper and growl-y, you could say. Those are all the characters I can think of at the moment.

Video Game Chat / Hyrule Warriors (name not final)
« on: December 18, 2013, 06:21:51 PM »
So there's a spinoff of Zelda that's a crossover between it and Koei's Warriors franchise (Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi, etc.) that was unveiled in the Nintendo Direct and I'm SUPER DUPER HYPED

What does TMK think? (And no, this isn't the main Wii U Zelda. Guess they're saving that for E3...)

Site Discussion / New feature request

I think you should be able to set font size from your Look and Layout settings on your profile. For example, I have my default font size in Firefox set to 11pt. But I have to zoom out in order for images on the Fungi Forums to display as intended. Otherwise, they'll be all blurry and stuff.

For example, check the attached files. Cap1.png shows the Fungi Forums as it displays after you zoom out. Images and such display perfectly, but look at that tiny text! "Normal" text isn't hard to read, but smaller text requires a bit of strain.

Now check Cap2.png and observe. Hell yeah, the text looks way more readable! But yeesh, those images! Blegh!

There really should be an option to set font size from your profile.
