The title strikes me as a bit odd, considering it's the third "New Super Mario Bros." and appears from that screenshot to be using SMB3 as its touchstone. Does this mean there could be a New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2?
Title: Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Post by: CrossEyed7 on April 20, 2012, 10:38:08 PM
Wasn't the whole point of calling the first one "New" so they wouldn't have to deal with all the numbering confusion (SMW is SMB4 in Japan, but not America; Yoshi's Island is SMW2 in America, but not Japan; Yoshi's Story may or may not be Yoshi's Island 2; etc)?

I guess it won't be too bad as long as they can come up with another word that ends in "ii" for the third console version (after New Super Mario Bros. Mii).

Here's some more screenshots with some Chinese guy talking over them:

Oh yeah. I forgot that "NSMBW2" was already announced. XD

(squee)  Okay, I really should consider getting a 3DS at some point in the near future now.  Heck, original NSMB was pretty much the sole thing that convinced me to get a DS.  But actual flight powerups?  What is this nonsense?  Does this mean actually mildly explorable levels?

It's kinda like how there was a cartoon 101 Dalmatians, then a live-action 101 Dalmatians, then a live-action 102 Dalmatians, and then a cartoon 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure (and the original novel version, which also had a sequel (something about a nuclear war and an alien/angel dog, according to Wikipedia (I need to read that now)).)(I like all this punctuation at the end of this sentence.).

Looking forward to this.

Noticing how every store that sells these games is still kinda pushing NSMB for the DS at it's initial price (correct me if I'm wrong, but hello local GameStop locations), I'd imagine there might finally be a price drop to a select grouping of games soon.

If they ditch the NSMB physics, then I'll be much happier. It's mainly the slippery slide animation that gets me. They oughta bring back the old school "Mario puts his arms out while sliding on one foot" animation like SMB 1, 3, and World. (Forgot if 2 does it.)

The game looks good as usual, but I feel that Nintendo has pumping out Mario games too quickly and not giving us enough real new content recently. While it's true that, for 95% of Mario games, each one is vastly different from the previous, I still think we need something completely original right now. Recently, Nintendo has just been bringing back old stuff and putting it in Mario games, most likely for the nostalgic factor that faded away ever since the original New Super Mario Bros. for the DS. Why not introduce a new world, similar to Dinosaur Land in Super Mario World? This would allow an even greater window of opportunity, since they don't have to worry about making everything too familiar.

New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii were great, but this is pushing the "New" name a whole lot.
Title: Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Post by: Lizard Dude on May 09, 2012, 06:07:21 PM
Isn't that what Galaxy was? Most of the enemies were new, most of the powerups were new, the main race Lumas was new, there was basically a new Princess, the music style was changed completely. They did introduce a new world.
Title: Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Post by: Kimimaru on May 10, 2012, 01:25:34 PM
That's true, but I want originality like that to be more frequent. Before 2006 or so, mostly every single Mario adventure, excluding remakes, was original and didn't focus solely on bringing back the past. That last statement I just made is what I believe New Super Mario Bros. 2 is doing.

EDIT: Note that Galaxy 1 & 2 are 3D mario games. I forgot to state this previously but I'm referring to the 2D games. I still think they're putting out new Mario games too quickly.

I honestly enjoy them bringing back lots of past elements.

On top of that, when they do a mix of nostalgic/familiar elements and brand new elements, it makes it fantastic. The SMG series is a prime example of that.

Looks like fun, but I think it's about time for Nintendo to do some moderate revamps to the graphics and such for the Mario games. Each game doesn't need to look totally different, but since Super Mario Galaxy, each game looks so similar that they're almost indistinguishable.

I agree with the concept, but if you are going to put YI in the first eight you should put YIDS in the second.  It came out in 2006.  I guess you could argue that it's not a Super Mario game by title, but if you want to go by title...  Why'd you include SML, but not SML3DS?
Title: Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Post by: CrossEyed7 on May 22, 2012, 04:39:52 PM
Fair point. And Super Princess Peach too. Mostly because I couldn't quickly find or procure a shot from them of Mario shooting a fireball in front of a pyramid, and also if I'd included SM3DL I would've had to include the Galaxies too, and the point would've gotten muddled.

I still think it's a fairly fair comparison, though. It's the progression of the Super Mario Bros. series. SML1 and 2 and YI were part of the SMB series at the time, though in retrospect we consider them their own serieses. They tried dramatically different visual styles from game to game. Look at SMAS, where instead of just porting it all to SMW graphics, they kept the unique style of each game (except for the subtle differences between SMB and TLL, which were glossed over). And just when it looked like they might settle on the SMW style after it was used in SML2 (and Mario Paint, and various other SNES games), Miyamoto said screw it and made YI (in protest against being pressured to make it look like DKC... which would have looked quite a bit like NSMB).

The graphical style of the current games considered part of the core SMB series has not changed at all. NSMBW, NSMB2 and NSMBM are just higher-res versions of the same graphics of the same worlds of NSMB seven years ago. And whereas YI back then was an out-of-nowhere massive graphical shakeup, YIDS's graphical style was a safe, sanitized copy of YI. And in that sense, there hasn't been any equivalent of YI, or PM for that matter. No stylistic surprises. Everything is safe.

As far as style, newer 2D Mario games have seemed too flat and too linear. The only thing I can say is that they should make the 2D sidescrollers look on par with Donkey Kong Country Returns. That, to me, set a great standard for how a Mario sidescroller should look as far as its style, how dynamic, deep, organic, and 'alive' it looks and plays, and the infinite amount of variety that doesn't keep you locked to a horizontal, flat, linear plane.

You could cite [Square] as trying to do something similar on SNES with SMRPG. [Rare] always tried to put a ton of detail into the original DKC series, [similar to Square].

"When the first screenshots for New Super Mario Bros. 2 were revealed last month, I had this crazy notion that Nintendo discovered a way to add DLC to NSMB on the DS. It wasn't until I saw that big "2" that I realized it was a full-blown sequel.

"A new Mario game -- not some odd spinoff but a true Mario platformer -- ought to be cause for celebration. Instead, I was deeply concerned that I had trouble distinguishing this sequel from its predecessor. Why should I be? Isn't it typical for a new game in a series to look similar to the ones prior? Well, not when we're talking about Mario." (http://www.destructoid.com/why-does-new-super-mario-bros-2-look-so-bland--226709.phtml)

"We've come full circle. For a game that has "new" in the title, it doesn't present any unique quality to the degree that all previous Mario games did. Every Mario game has been "new" and fresh compared to the previous one, but this game seems to emulate the world of the original Super Mario Bros. It's a return to the first Mushroom Kingdom with some added tricks culled from all the adventures since then. How oddly appropriate that in the Mario world what's new is considered old and what's old is considered new." I still think the SMB series need a reboot a la MM9 w/ some e-World add-ons and a level editor like Mario vs. DK2 on Wii U.

I'd also love to see a new Wario DIY on Wii U that lets you make entire levels and worlds to share on Wii U.

I think the big reliance on coins could make it an interesting, at least somewhat unique experience compared to past NSMB games. I'm questioning how big of a role they actually play in the gameplay, though. What, does Bowser have some sort of machine or plan or something, and the only way to foil it is by collecting a buttload of coins? Do you unlock new levels with a bunch of coins? Why are coins such a big deal in this one? That was what I was thinking.

Wario should show up in some fashion.

Preferably some very hip, trendy fashion, like layered T-shirts and Heelies and frosted tips.

I think having to stop to collect billions of coins every 4 seconds would interrupt the flow of the game moreso than any other Mario game (especially with Mario's stupid slide he's done ever since NSMB).

I also notice 100 coins still gives you a 1UP. So... 70 lives at the end of World 1?

Lastly, if this is all about coins, presumably there will be leaderboards. Maybe leaderboards for individual levels, but I doubt that. It'll be total coin count, and then you know it'll be broken within a week because someone will find the level with the fastest opportunity for the most coins and play the level over and over and over.

I've noticed that NSMB2 is already following a trend set by MTO: the point system not relying on skill, but on how much time you can sink into the game. Like, yeah, I had several matches with the regional top leaderboard guy "Dragon:3" (82,391 points) on Mario Tennis. I've beaten him 5 out of the 7 times I've faced him. [darn].... is it because I'm insanely good? Not really, he's a moderately decent player; he just does nothing but play Mario Tennis. I could have 82k points too if I did nothing but play. So, same sort of thing I see happening with NSMB2: You'll find leaderboards that won't show level times completed or anything worthy of achievement (and forget statistics), but it'll show total coin count, probably show the top 30 people (or hell maybe just the top guy and that's it like Mario Tennis) and his coin count will be 7.4 million coins.

EDIT: (and for the love of Christ, get rid of the stupid ass BAHH BAHH voice bull[dukar]. I thought they were gonna kill it off, but it was everywhere in the NSMB U trailer)

For those who haven't read my NSMB U post yet, holding a baby Yoshi adds an ear ache-inducing harmony track of the "BAHH BAHH" people, but it sounds like a bunch of chipmunks.

NSMB2: the one typically shown with endless coin collecting, the return of the Raccoon Suit, Reznor, and Koopalings (or Koopa Kids if you prefer)

NSMBU: Baby Yoshi powers, Squirrel Suit, Acorn Mushroom.. (I haven't kept up with this one as well as the other. I'm not excited for the Wii U...)

Now that the game is out in Japan, spoilers for the game are now available. So what does the super awesome, mega-hyped one million coin goal unlock you? A new title screen.

luigi looks like he has a fox tail in the picture.

That's because he does.

Hmm.  There's a fox suit in NSMB2 and a flying squirrel suit in NSMBWiiU?  I wonder how the mechanics differ between games/suits.  Is the fox suit akin to the Tanooki Suit in SMB3 while the flying squirrel suit is more like the cape in SMW?

If it's the same as 3D Land, Luigi's fox suit/tail is the same as Mario's raccoon ones, functionally. Just different-looking.

It makes me think it was made that way for simultaneous multiplayer. Not that 3D Land has it, nor may it have ever been intended to. Just something they'll be able to do if you've ever got Tanooki Mario and Luigi on the screen at the same time and can tell the difference between yellow and brown. The Toads, although unplayable, were shown in Tanooki suits as well, but they looked like Mario's and had colored bandanas... but then Mario can also get a Tanooki suit with a bandana that enables the statue transformation.

So who knows. I don't. Really.

To tell the truth I really didn't like Luigi's fox suit in 3D Land. I thought he'd have looked better with a regular Tanooki suit + a green scarf.

The screen-locking thing for co-op seems a bit strange, considering the relatively low field of view due to the 3DS screen.

I've seen a Mario hack that splits the screen in real time horizontally, vertically, and even both at the same time if the situation presents itself. You'd be surprised how well it actually works. It does jar you from time to time, but overall, it's a pretty unique way of handling two players on the screen simultaneously.

I believe co-op in DKCR automatically transports you back to whatever character is on the screen, in most situations, if you're off-screen long enough, and not about to come in contact with any type of hazard. (There's a set time limit until this happens).

The best solution is... you have two players, two 3DS', their own separate screens, obviously: just let the players roam about, and give some possible indication as to where the other character is in relation to your screen. Cuz it'd sure suck to be gaining momentum for a big jump only to be halted in mid-air by the slower character; on the flipside, if it gives screen priority to the leading character, it'd suck to be the trailing character getting dragged by the leading character.

So, how many Coins is everyone up to? 15,000 here at the end of World 3.

I'm halfwayish through World 6 (no secret worlds) and I've got a little over 17,000. Only played Coin Rush a few times, though.

Bets are on as to how much the DLC level packs will cost.

EDIT: Just 100%'ed the game, sans Coin Rush. Is it just me, or is this game's difficulty a step down from NSMBWii?

One million coins.

/me pinky finger

My real guess is: hopefully less than 2 bucks. I expect anywhere between 99 cents and.. well, 2 bucks.

I'm surprised they kept that demeaning White Leaf thing. Something tells me they really want everyone to win quickly. Still, I'm having fun with the game, and trying to unlock all the other stuff.

I'm thinking that I'll enjoy NSMBU more.

I must say, the credits/ending music is nice in this one. It makes more prominent use of the "Bah"s, making it sound more like Sunshine's scat rendition of the SMB theme than other NSMB fare.

I thought the game was a little bit on the easy and short side. I already have everything in the game except the 1,000,000 coin reward. It was a fun game though, and the 1,000,000 coins will keep me busy until Paper Mario: Star Sticker is released.

I'm in accord with Weegee's last post.  Despite that from what I've seen they reused practically 100% of the soundtrack from NSMB+NSMBW, and destroyed it with that annoying "BAH" chorus (anyone else still like the original NSMB's athletic theme the best?), they actually did a surprisingly good job adding to the NSMBW credits theme.  Would have been even more impressed if it weren't for what the credits consist of (Mario collecting yet more trails of coins, all the while carrying Peach back to the castle.  I still would have liked at least some shoddily put-together excuse for the game's main gimmick, after all).

I think there are entrances and exits to pipes with mandatory coins but competing for minimum coins would be fun, yeah.

@jdaster64 and Weegee

What makes the credits sound so good is that the "bah"s are really "doo"s, which actually sounds pretty good, better than "BAH BAH" all the time at least. Why couldn't they have just used "doo"s the whole time?

Nobody likes doo doo in their music.

I haven't experienced the music in NSMB2 yet, but I can say that the NSMB series needs some better musical selection.. well, I say that.. Most of the tracks from NSBMW were good (Iggy's jungle levels come to mind), and the initial track ok (not the athletic version, but the other one) and the Tower musics from NSMBds were ok too..

The intro area to 6-3 is evil. That pit on the far right only exists to kill people who think they're tricky and finding a secret area.

Have you waited awhile at the title screen menu? It starts out like the intro cutscene, but then...

There's apparently an invisible 1-Up block near that pit.

Yes.

I recently started playing NSBM2 again.  Why didn't anyone warn me against spending my coins to save when they were needed to open the star/special world.  I tend to play portable game in small spurts and thus save often.  If I understand the situation correctly I could already be playing the special world had I not used all the five coin per path saves.

Quick Save is your friend, Luigi-san. I don't move on until collecting every Star Coin in a given level.

If it was my game and my game only Quick Save would be great, but my six-year-old daugher often plays my 3DS and would have deleted my quick saves.

Fair enough.

The level packs are good for Coin-farming, but it's a shame they can't be played as regular levels.

So, in Coin Rush, is it better to use regular Mario or White Raccoon Mario?

I've used both, but my coin count is higher with Raccoon Mario than with normal Mario.
Title: Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Post by: CrossEyed7 on March 17, 2013, 12:30:41 AM
White Raccoon Mario can't use Gold Flowers and can't touch Koopa shells without instantly killing them. Those two will severely limit your ability to get big coin amounts on most levels.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ2vaYli16c

It is possible to get 30,000 coins with White Raccoon Mario, at least on the coin-farming DLC packs, but any other level pack is going to require a Gold Flower, and often some shell-jumping trick or at least kicking a shell, for a really high score.

But there's really no good reason to get a million coins anyway, so do whatever's funnest.

Oh hey, I have a question: If I've set a DLC pack as my StreetPass record, what happens if I StreetPass someone who doesn't have that pack? Or vice-versa? Can the person who doesn't have the pack see the record? Can they challenge it without having bought that pack? Will it even show up as a StreetPass on their system?

I've just finished the main game (save for the special worlds) and so just unlocked the ability to carry a Gold Flower in Coin Rush. Coin Rush should become more fun now. If only I could download the classic level pack..but that's a rant for another time.

Hey, I think I can answer your question: I hadn't made it into the Star Pack yet when I StreetPassed someone who had a Star Pack record. I still got the ability to play it (which I did), but it didn't become available to me after that. It was still grayed out in the regular Coin Rush options.

Addendum: I StreetPassed someone who had a dlc pack record. It wouldn't tell me which pack it was, and I also couldn't play it since I didn't have that one downloaded. So my answer above may not be entirely accurate either..

He has to gripe about something.

On topic: I've got over 2 million coins now! Though there are several levels that I never want to play again, there are still a lot of fun levels, and I am disappointed by the lack of an airship level (though the one level with a floating ship in World 5 was pretty nice actually).
