Mario Chat / The Nintendo investor meeting and what it means for Mario
« on: February 01, 2014, 05:52:45 PM »
Amidst the various news and (mostly) non-news resulting for the January Nintendo investor meeting, two things could (should Iwata not resume his proud traditions of saying things and not doing [dukar]) have an interesting impact on the franchise: Nintendo has expressed a willingness to expand character-licensing deals as well as doing more collaborations with third-party developers.

Do you expect more substantial promotional material (such as cartoons, comics... etc) to be produced in the coming years? Do you think there will be more third party-outsourced Mario games in the future? Do you view such potential developments positively or negatively?

Inspired by this. I don't really expect this to pick up much steam but hey, maybe we can get something going!

To start, I've read a bunch of times over the years that Wario was purposefully designed as an over-the-top evil caricature of Mario to represent Nintendo R&D1's frustration with having to work with an existing IP. Is there anything to substantiate that?

Latest News / Re: Yoshi's New Island release date announced

Unless that statement was actually sensationalized bullhonk.

That's the hypothesis that seems the most likely to me. The translation (quoted on page #2 of that thread) has some rather obvious errors.

That makes me wonder, though... Could Yoshiaki Koizumi's infamous statement of "DKC characters aren't fresh enough so that's why we didn't include them in Jungle Beat" similarly be tabloid hokum? The site that translated the interview (NSider) is apparently not very reliable....

It never stops bothering me that a game which used to basically be Miyamoto's statement about imaginative, visually-unique games triumphing over prerendered drek has been farmed out and recycled at least twice in the last five years.

To the people that made Vampire Rain, at that.

Unless somehow 3 exclusives that are continuations of series that are system sellers came out, but that would never happen.

You mean like how Double Dash saved the GameCube.

Anyone with nerve could tell the Wii U forecast was unachievable. What's more concerning is that the 3DS apparently can't pick up the slack despite multiple million-selling games and being the best-selling gaming device essentially everywhere.

I already know you don't have a soul so no one should be surprised that you don't like Super Paper Mario.

I love TTYD , yet SPM is one  the most agressivelly mediocre thing I've ever played. Last Battle is legitimately a better RPG platformer.

Bumping this thread since the author made a follow-up article on the GameCube's genesis and commercial history. It's a longread, but well worth it.

It especially put into perspective just how throughously Nintendo misread the market during that period. Western developers getting traction? Gut your western subsidiary and double-down on the shrinking Japanese market, duh. Multiplatform releases becoming more common? How dare these parasistes cheapen the ~Nintendo Difference~! Online gaming on the rise? Pfffft, kids will love that GBA connectivity right, right?

Mario Chat / Your favourite Mario developers?
« on: November 04, 2013, 05:57:19 AM »
USGamers recently published this neat little article about some of the the development teams involved with the mainline and RPG Mario games, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to start a discussion about everyone's favourite Mario developers. Of course, you can mention studios beside those listed in the article, such as Hudson Soft or Next Level Games.

Personally, I love SPD 1's crazy sense of humor and bold asethetics, but EAD pre-restructuring is responsible for all of my favourite games in the franchise, save for TTYD. I didn't (and still don't) care much for Sunshine, though.
