It's pretty much called an opinion.
Anyone can say that Mario sucks if they have proper reasons.

Answering "He just does" to "Why do you think that Mario sucks" is just idiotic, but I think it's reasonable to say "I dislike the Mario game series because I'm more of a First-Person-Shooter fan, and personally think that Mario games are childish with their simplicity."

I think that pretty much ends the argument right there. Nobody should feel like they have to "covert" anyone to Mario-ism, since the majority of people like Mario anyway.

I wouldn't say majority. But yes, I was once a "You're stupid if you think Nintendo sucks whatever you like sucks" person... now I see the light. Still, "Mario is gay" is easily deflected with "Peach doesn't think so," or "Mario doesn't exist; a three-dimensional polygon in a video game cannot think for itself or have a sexual preference."
