Here's how all of Mario's game titles stack up in sales (Japan), in a simple to read picture form. Any of these numbers jump out at you?

I find it kind of difficult to create conclusions from Japanese sales data. They have a vastly different culture than that of the United States, you know.

I wonder if any game will ever surpass the original...

SMG could have a chance...

Honestly, I think only NSMB would have had that chance. SMG will be fantastic, but only an entire reinvention of the franchise can surpass the original. Of course, I haven't played SMG, so maybe the game will be just that.

I dunno, NSMB looks like it has a good chance. Since every single person in Japan owns two DSes, its sales should still grow quite a bit.
-
Besides, by the time SMG comes out, I highly doubt that 6.8 million Wiis will have been sold.
-
Um, according to my sources, the Wii already has sold over that, about seven million.
-
But this chart is only Japanese sales, recall.

Interesting question:
Where's Super Mario Sunshine in all this?
Who posted that? Not me, hehe! *runs*
