Title: Make us our new link banner and win a Gmail invite!
Post by: Deezer on October 09, 2004, 07:48:24 PM
That's right, make a new link banner for us, and we'll give you one (1) Gmail invite if we end up using yours. (Gmail is Google's web-based e-mail service with one gigabyte of free storage. The only way to sign up is if you are invited.)

Here is our current banner:

The Mushroom Kingdom - All about Mario

Guidelines:

Send your banner(s) to: contest -at- themushroomkingdom dot net (or post them here).

That's it, good luck!

I already have an invite, but might make a banner anyway.  Although getting recognition for creating a banner for the best Mario site on the net is award enough, will there be anything else to win if the invite isn't used?

So, TMK is moving to TheMushroomKingdom.net?

Will the site colors and style stay the same?

Do you need anything else?

At the moment, I don't have any ideas for alternate prizes...

The domain is already active (it forwards)...  We'll probably be on ClassicGaming forever, unless we can get access to E3 another way.

Site design is staying the same.

Here is a result of my experiments with 3D text.  It will be deleted shortly.

Here's a start for a banner with SMS Mario and the text from TMK.  I am not going to waste anymore time on it.  If someone else wants it, they can have it.

Since we want to have a very good banner, I'm going to publicly critique the entries as they come in.
nintendoexpert89 (GMail): too boxy, text is too small
MamaMia Mario: Haha, but at least make sure people can tell who that is on the banner... I might move the text around a bit as well
Luigison #1: 404 Not Found
Luigison #2: please antialias resized objects
LlamaYoshi eleven11: Mario font is overused in bad ways (you can see through the letters) ... crappy white pixels surround the image
TEM: way, way too cluttered
Ian #1(GMail) general comments: use PNG format so you don't have color/detail loss
Ian #2(GMail): green blob looks kinda weird
cowman (GMail): very bad collaging job, negated images don't look good, motto doesn't make sense
Super-Dino-Yoshi #1: I don't get the motto... and "kinda" is spelled wrong
Super-Dino-Yoshi #2: I don't like the font substitution
Super-Dino-Yoshi #3: ... or that one...

That's cool Deezer.  I like the flags and boxart.  Also, having multiple screens on a page is something I have wanted for a long time.  I only have one problem with it:  It only fills about half of my window width.  I guess most people don't have 19 inches like I do, but centering the page might look better.  Anyway, good job.

First time posting on the boards, but have been visiting the site for a few years now. I decided to make a support banner for your site. I am already using gmail, so I dont need another invite. If I win, maybe just credit on your support page (maybe even a link to my site). You dont have to if you dont want. I just like helping out sites I like.

DrewK:
Nice, very old-school look to it. Perfect character art and the 1-Up dotting the "i" is a nice touch. White text is OK, though the font style is iffy and there's no dot in "dot net" (or it's too dark and my monitor isn't bright enough).

Comments round 2:
Space Yoshi X: The Mushroom Kingdom text looks bad and is spelled wrong, does not include new URL
Zeus Koopa: Okay, but I don't like the font or colors of the main text
mariofan 7: Does not include new URL
DrewK #1&#2: Shift the text over so that Toad and Mario have even spacing around them... have you considered a very slight shadow behind the text?  It's got potential
AV-Cables #1: Too bright?
AV-Cables #2: Bad spacing
AV-Cables #3&#4: I like the font style, but I don't like the SSS sprites.
AV-Cables #5: Motto is nearly unreadable
AV-Cables general: Bit-ness isn't important anymore so I don't care for the tagline.  You're joking about the "128-bit karts" right?  That doesn't even make any sense.
Super Dino Yoshi #5: Style is nice, but I don't like FLUDD and there's too much space around Mario
Super Dino Yoshi #6: Okay what is with the nonsensical taglines?
Super Dino Yoshi #7,#8,#9: Animation isn't worth the bandwidth; 1 loop isn't good since you can miss it, and multiloop isn't good unless you time it properly
aD-aX: I definitely like the 3D text... maybe make the star smaller, get rid of the "the" and ".net" and put the whole URL below it and use a different Mario
Brien DeRosa (GMail): TMK looks crappy and the banner is kinda empty, but I do like the tagline idea
Mr. Mime (GMail): Stretched text looks bad.. floating Bob-omb...
Double D (GMail): Bad antialiasing on Mario, bad text spacing, don't like the colors
nintendoexpert89 #2: Disembodied heads are odd... banner is just too... plain
Ian #3 (GMail): Pretty good, might try to make the text like our current header so that the outline is even
Ian #4&#5 (GMail): Still don't like the green blob
Ian #6&#7 (GMail): Pretty good, might combine some of the ideas from #3
Ian (general) (GMail): Might try a different motto, Deezer also noted that the huge amount of red and green use makes it look like Christmas

Sliding because Mario slides a bunch in SMS, and first as in first place. It has a slight reference to baseball, but it's still "first place." That's what I thought, anyway.

Baseball answer:
They allow you to run past first base, so if you slide it'll just slow you down and you won't be beating many throws. You should slide into first if the throw takes the first baseman off the base, because he'll try to tag you.

Site answer:
We're already in first. \:D/ \:D/ ;)

Oh yeah, and the pic of Mario has him sliding, I didn't notice that... I thought it meant how he kicks the koopa shells, so the shells "slide into first" or something...

*EDIT*  I was having some problems looking at the colors and I changed them to the exact palette of those from Super Mario World and I think it looks tons better in comparison:

Here's how it looks with the white border...or do you guys use light gray?  Anyway, it's a little less colorful than the other one, so you guys decide, I guess...

EDIT: I'm probably getting way too excited about this whole thing but I just added 3 more coins to make it 7, which represents the seven years the site has been running (since 1997).  I don't know if you would want me to put that in the banner somewhere, but it's just an idea I thought could work pretty well.

Luigison: Ahahhahaahah, clever.

Infinity's End: I've always liked border effects, as seen with our logos and Forum logo. Pretty good idea with the 'shroom platform. Maybe give the URL and tagline some more room to breathe, and use Super Mario All Stars sprites instead?

GLO3: That may be true, but not nearly as much fun.

Sorry, Super-Dino-Yoshi. We're all just making these in the interest for what's best for TMK, though, aren't we? Your striped banner seriously looks great. Don't give up hope yet.

I can't post my banners here as PNG's currently (which is why they look kind of blurry), but like I said before, Megabyte has them as PNG's. There's always email.

On a final note, I need some feedback on my banners.

Critiques round 3
HOT TIP #1: Pasting a bunch of random Mario sprites will not make you a winner!
HOT TIP #2: Anti-alias everything except sprites

mariofan 7: Fix the font aliasing and the URL
DrewK #3&#4: The 1-up looks misaligned... does the whitish drop shadow look good behind the text?
Infested_Gnome: Bad text overlap, URL too small, sprites blurry
Super-Dino-Yoshi #10-#20: STOP with the senseless taglines!  You don't need to submit so many color variations, especially when they don't help readability... you should outline the text to make it readable.  Mario needs to be antialiased.
Suffix i1a: White light on the main text is too bright
Suffix i2a: White mist and especially the oval is too bright.. are they even necessary?
Mr. Mime #2 (GMail): Still don't like the IT'S A MARIO line... rest of banner is too dead
Joey (GMail): Bad cropping job on the mushroom, might rearrange the sprites a bit, get rid of the @ sign, and make the text clearer... different colors if necessary
InfinitysEnd #1-6: I like the NES-type font for the URL.  The T platform is a nice idea, but it gets a little lost... what if you styled the font in the same manner as the platform?  Stuff seems a little jammed to the left side.
aD-aX (GMail) #2: I don't know if I like that particular sprite, but I love the text style... maybe add a tagline or something to use up the rest of the space.
KoopaShell: Nope.

My current favorite artists:
aD-aX

DrewK

that second new one is amazing! Also, what about .jpg Its easier for me to just save them like that at a low compression rate. And anti-aliasing text skrews it up I'll anti-alias the mario pic but this tag-line actually does make sense... well sort of...

I really like this one...

but I have some suggestions:

At first glance I read "he Mushroom Kingdom"... Try a gold "T" to start it off, lengthen the platform that has "dom" just a little, and move the URL to the bottom. I like the NES font.

Super-Dino-Yoshi, the background is a fair idea, but it's not too well put together. It just doesn't really blend.

I noticed if I changed the letters from "gold" to peach, they blend in with the stalks better.  So, I don't think it will be hard to register that I'm using the first platform as a T.  I'm sticking with this idea, because I think it's a good one, and it's what made me start making these banners!  Anyway, do you think changing the O's to coins and a shroom is a little much?  And I also can't move the URL to the bottom b/c it gets partially covered up and blends in with the stalks.  I could change the color of the URL, but I think white is pretty appropriate.  I gave it a little more room to "breathe" though.

Yeah, sprites or items make better bullets than letters. In addition, I think the "T" would be less confusing if it was closer to the size of an actual letter. Anyhow, does anyone have any comments on my latest banners (bottom of page six)?

InfinitysEnd: The reason I liked the gold so much was because it reminded me of gold coins atop the platforms in SMB. I don't like the Mushroom and Coins substituting letters in that banner.

Suffix: I like the thumbs-up Mario version better. Don't anti-alias the sprite, and maybe there is too much red.

That looks terrific!  I like all the mushrooms in the background and the night sky, and all the colors blend together pretty well.  But... was that meant to be a copy of InfinitysEnd's banner? (that sounded weird)

I think that we should ask the good, kind (insane) folks at Nintendorks to help out with this.  They make millions of cool banners as strange as they are.  Of course I'm only joking here.

Hey Deezer, why on Earth was my thread closed in General Mario Chat?  Was it because that Melee isn't considered a Mario game or did it have something to do with Rookie?  I can't believe it.  My first thread gets only a few replies and my second one is closed down after one.  I'm terrible at choosing good topics.

No, I didn't mean to copy him.  Mine is based off of a night time level in SMAS:SMB.  I added the mushroom stools because mushroom stools are awesome.  I also used the colours from the mushrooms for the text.  Then I darkened all the sprites so that the text would stand out more.

What if the mushroom platform also glowed gold, but when the shine fades with the rest of the color, you can see that it's a mushroom platform?

And I also like tha banner with the night sky.  Night Sky Rocks!

I like that idea of the flashing mushroom... but how about this: all of the letters next to the mushroom are the same color of the mushroom?!  They could be yellow with red spots or red with white spots.  And maybe the "I" in kingdom could be a warp pipe.  Just a suggestion.  Megabyte (can't do that code thing) and Deezer  are the real experts here.

These recent ones with the mushrooms are my favorite so far :).

Deezer, I'm just going to have to disagree with you there.  I think anyone that "can't notice that it's a T" is either completely blind or just not understanding the banner, and that's pretty sad.  YOU know it's a T.  I know it's a T. EVERYONE HERE knows it's a T.  Where are you coming up with this?  If you didn't realize, part of the "Oh! I see!  The "T" is also the mushroom platform!  That's pretty clever!" is basically the reason I did it that way.  I think I've put enough time and effort into these banners (probably more than I should) so I'm just going to stop now.  Good luck to everyone.

Ooh, I got an idea!  How about a banner that has not only a few Mario characters and stuff but also several of the caricatures of Deezer and co.?  Ha ha, that would look so rediculous!

Now, to be serious for once, what if there was a banner with a background of mushrooms or blocks or something and surrounding the words "The Mushroom Kingdom" were a bunch of Marios with different powers such as Raccoon Mario, Fire Mario, Caped Mario, Winged-Cap Mario, and so on.  I dunno, it's just a thought.

Critiques part IV:

InfinitysEnd: Your work is really nice.  However, either fix the T, or we just can't use it.
TMKbannershroomtext.png: Glad you tried out my idea.  It works, but not as well as the ones you did after that...
TMKbannercoinlogo.png: Love the golden text
TMKbannerpeachwtag.png: It would look better if the "The" wasn't italicized.
TMKbannerpeach.png: It's better with the tagline.
TMKbannershroom2.png: The problem here is not the coin and mushroom itself, but the type of coin and mushroom used.  If you did it like aD-aX, it could work.
TMKbannerani.gif: Very nice looking, except the T of course.
TMKbanneranitag1.gif / TMKbanneranitag2.gif / TMKbanneranitag3.gif / TMKbanneranitag4.gif:  Hmm I bet we could come up with something wittier than that for the tagline, but they do look nice.

Suffix: Looking good.  I'm just going to list some possible alterations to make things more interesting.
tmkbanner-i1c.jpg: What if the main text was Super Mushroom themed? (add white dots)
tmkbanner-i2c.jpg: How about outlining the main text somehow?

Super-Dino-Yoshi:
TMKbanner19.jpg: The light gradient is weird on the left side.
TMKbanner20.jpg: Too dim and poor URL font
TMKbanner-dud.jpg: Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on here...
TMKbanner21.gif / TMKbanner22.gif: You forgot the .net and perhaps a tagline along the ground level (one of ours).
TMKbanner23.jpg: No, the M in that case is okay, but yes, lose the tagline.
TMKbanner24.jpg: And by lose the tagline I mean use ours or one that describes the site better rather than just having clouds.

¥tterbiJúm: Poorly pasted text and simple sprites won't cut it.

XanderX: Wow, somebody's just jumped to the top of the pack!
tmk_banner_468x60.png: Very nice.
tmk_banner_468x60_v2.png: Nope, don't like the tagline colors or tagline itself.
tmk_banner_468x60_v3.png: This could work, but it's spelled "definitive"  You might be able to lighten the blue a bit to make it more readable.
tmk_banner_468x60_v4.png: Don't like the tagline.

Brian S. (GMail): Yes, that's waaaaaaaaaaay too cluttered and wholly unreadable.

Typhlosion (GMail): Sorta funny, but what's with the negative image parts of the main text?  Again, sprites-only won't cut it.

Shadic (GMail): It's okay, but just that, okay.  The text seems stretched or antialiased strangely.

HOT TIP: It's okay to "steal" others' ideas that we like.  If you do, you and the person with the original idea will both "win" the contest.

Things we like:
3D text that really stands out
Tagline inclusion
Original or creative use of art

Things we don't like:
Only sprites
Nonsensical taglines
Aliasing
Poor pasting/layout jobs
Poor font use

Remember, the banner should compel people who haven't heard of the site before to visit.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!  SDY, that is good, that is really good!  The only way it could get any better is if Luigi was sticking his tongue out at him.  No, never mind it's good enough.  IE, don't give up!  You can do it, man (and I can't because I don't know how)!

On November 21st, Nintendo will unleash the greatest handheld system on America that this world has ever seen.  Two screens, two extra buttons, one touch-sensitive screen, wireless multiplayer, voice recognition, and more.  Prepare to severely wet yourself.

Well... I felt IE should win so I did the banner with a T instead of a mushroom platform... I'm sure IE could have done it better (I'm working with Jasc 8 IE is working with Photoshop...) but here it is...

Just give me the TagLine you want, and I will put it on.

And I don't need the Gmail so you can give it to InfinitysEnd if you want. :P

Or I can give you the .psd file too, so you can make your own tagline. Whichever.

Anything for a fellow yoshi! First upload your banner to a host.

Second, use the HTML code <img src="adress of the file">

Third, replace adress of the file with the adress. It will be something like http://www.geocities.com/SuperSonicYoshi/Banner1.png giving you

<img src="http://www.geocities.com/SuperSonicYoshi/Banner1.png">

Fourth, use the checkbox that says "Check here to use HTML in your message" after you are certain that the checkmark is there post the message.

On that note, I think that the rules need to be bent to allow Arnold to run for persident. (not really, or am I true?)

I don't really understand the purpose of the swirly stuff on the text in the last one... But then, in my first edition of I2, there was some green swirly stuff in the background that I eventually got rid of. You can see the relative finals on page 6.

I was jsut playing around with the text. I saw that look and I thought to my self... self it looks good enough to wast some more memory of my limited memory on the next b/c thats a great excuse to say that I can't get content up b/c of a lack o memory.

Well, if you can't find a banner you really enjoy, you should invest more time in perfecting the best. That's what I did. In fact, I1 and I2 had about 5 stages of development.
Title: Re: Make us our new link banner and win a Gmail invite!
Post by: Super-Dino-Yoshi on December 04, 2004, 11:11:12 AM
Sliding into first banner took roughly 6 stages, I think only 3 were actully shown in these posts. This banner has so far gone through 2.

What?!? Perhaps you just can't find a style you like then. But that's kind of scary. I suppose making many banners could increase your chances of success...
Title: Re: Make us our new link banner and win a Gmail invite!
Post by: Super-Dino-Yoshi on December 04, 2004, 04:03:57 PM
Welll... I put a ton of effort into the sliding into first banner, mainly b/c lizard dude said it would have been his favorite if the text had been better. So then I changed the text, and tried a couple different ways of positioning the subtitle and the nain text. I then added stripes on the text, but then realized that it would look better with stripes in the bg. I was working on some different text styles, but that was when everyone started saying it wasn't very good... SO I started over.

I see. Sometimes the renders/pictures used in banners need to be more universal... Personally, I liked the "Sliding into First" banner. It was a clever use of tagline and picture.
