daFunkster, it's from an old Sega Megadrive game called "Zero Wing" - made and translated by the same Japanese company. As a result the English text was poorly done and you end up with quotes such as:

"Someone set up us the bomb"
"We get signal"
"All your base are belong to us"
"You have no chance to survive make your time"
"You know what you doing"
"Take off every 'zig'"
"Move 'zig' for great justice!"

Anyway, it was so poorly done that it became a cult thing, and slowly developed into a large, peculiar, mad craze.
