Title: Help! I Slept Through a Generation
Post by: Mega 2 on April 30, 2007, 02:58:20 AM
I dropped out of gaming almost completely when I went off to college, and I haven't bought a Mario game since I got "Paper Mario" on its release date.  Now I'm graduated and have the spare time to return to videoland, but I'm totally overwhelmed.  There are countless new games, and rereleases of old games in too many forms.  So I would love to know what the folks here are the essential Mario games for the Cube, D.S., and G.B.A.  Or rather, what a fan of the good ol' 8-64 bit Mario games would love.

For starters I'd go for Super Mario Sunshine and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga

I love the title for this topic.

Anyway, welcome back to the wonderful world of video games. Things have changed. Nintendo was in third place in the console wars, but is starting to make a comeback with it’s newest console, the Wii. Here’s the best Mario titles for the GCN, DS and GBA (Though, I don’t recommend buying a Gamecube, as it has been succeeded by the Nintendo Wii, which is a lot better)

GCN:
Super Mario Sunshine
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!

DS:
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario 64 DS (Though, you shouldn’t really get it if you have the original, since it’s not much different)
Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi: Partners in time.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the minis

Wii (if you can find one):
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario Galaxy (coming later this year)

GBA:
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Any of the games in the Super Mario Adveance remake series

That’s about it. I didn’t really recommend anything for the GBA as the only Mario platformers for it are all re-makes (unless you count Mario vs. Donkey Kong. That was an original game, but it was light on platforming, and heavy on puzzles). If you’re really curious, you could check out the whole site at www.themushroomkingdom.net (if you haven’t checked already) for a list of all Mario games on all systems.

Isn't Super Princess Peach supposed to be in the Nintendo DS list since it's a platformer too? Also, the man needs to know about a certain spin-off called Super Mario Strikers (Mario Smash Football for PAL users) for the Nintendo GameCube, as well as the up-coming sequel Mario Strikers Charged (tentative title for PAL users) for the Wii.

C'mon! The man also needs to know about other Mario-related titles such as Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube, and the up-coming Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii! Not to mention the coming soon Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for both the Wii and the Nintendo DS!

(Keep in mind that the Wii is backward compatible with GameCube software!)

Dude...Cube it. Get the Gamecube and try out Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Mario Party 5 (Just my opinion, I like it more than the rest of them.), Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Mario Kart: Double Dash ^_^.

And for the Wii, definantly (Mozilla doesn't recognize the word "definantly) get Super Smash Bros. Brawl when it comes out and (now to mention releases) get Super Paper Mario! But I don't even have a wii so...
/me shrugs.

definantly (Mozilla doesn't recognize the word "definantly)
That's because it's spelled "definitely."

...GOD I FEEL STUPID! That's why it wouldn't correct correctly. I dunno, I was just spelling it how I said the word...

I think the guy should just have a look at the site's game list (http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/games/) and look at all the games released between Paper Mario and now.

I saw this thread and decided to help out a bit. For one, Mega 2 missed out on all the games since Paper Mario, like the Exploding Barrels games.

I've been to the list on the main site.  Just to clarify, I wasn't asking for a list of every Mario game made since 2001.  I want to know which are the absolutely essential, highly-recommended ones that I should run out and buy right now.  I'm mostly interested in adventure titles rather than puzzle games, sports games etc.  I'm hoping there's something out there with the feel of "Mario 64," "Mario R.P.G.," and the classic side-scrollers.

B.T.W. I probably won't be getting a Wii for quite a while, but I will probably be getting a free Cube from my friend who just bought a Wii.  An investment in a D.S. may also be in my future.

In that case, you're going to want the GBA game, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and also Paper Mario 2. You still should check out Super Smash Brothers Melee, though. Maybe rent it.

I like Super Princess Peach and New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Sunshine.

Mmm... okay then. Here’s the best of the best:

Super Mario Sunshine
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario and Luigi: Partners in time
Super Princess Peach

That’s about it. The other ones I listed are pretty good, too.

Luigi's Mansion for the Gamecube. Good place to start, since it was the first major "Mario" title after Paper Mario, I think.

GameCube:
PAPER MARIO: THE THOUSAND-YEAR DOOR
Super Mario Sunshine is worth playing...
Super Smash Bros. Melee, of course.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker isn't bad either.

Nintendo DS:
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario 64 DS
WarioWare: Touched! (Caution: Play with a Q-tip lest your screen becomes a hideously scratched mess)
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Wii: You're likelier to find one in stores now than four months in the past, truly. If you get one, don't get a GameCube. The Wii plays GC games.)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Super Paper Mario
WarioWare: Smooth Moves. I've grown a bit bored with it, but it's excellent for its multiplayer modes, and most of them require only one remote.
Wii Sports is free...

Game Boy Advance:
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
WarioWare: Twisted!
Yeah, any SMA will do. I loved them all, except Super Mario Advance... I'm not really a SMB2 guy so I really only got it to have every SMA...

'S all the wisdom I have, many said the same stuff. Chup's opinion on Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is quite out of the ordinary, it ROXORZ.

Super Mario Sunshine is worth playing...

Your username sounds familiar?  Did you come here in 2000-01?  Does "worth playing" mean it's just all right, nothing special?  Or am I misinterpreting you?

From what I see here, it looks like the choice for first new game is "Superstar Saga," since it's on a system I currently have.  I do have to ask, what kind of R.P.G. is it?

If I get James' Cube I'll definitely buy "Melee" because I can see Peach's panties in it...I mean, because I played it before and liked it.  And maybe "Sunshine."  I'll wait a while on "Thousand Year Door" because I never played through the 1st "Paper Mario" game and am going to start fresh once I get my 64 back (I loaned it to my brother for his last year of college).  If I get a D.S. (probably more a matter of "when") it looks like it will be a tossup between "New Bros." and "Peach."

Are any of the new Karts really awesome?  Are they even new games as opposed to rereleases?

You've all been very helpful, but I need the stuff I mentioned above cleared up before I make up my mind.

Nah, February of 2005.
SMSu is pretty great in the gameplay department (the return of Yoshi for great justice), but I hate its plot with a flaming passion and Peach's character sucks. She's more dull-witted than the Goombas in the movie and does nothing but get kidnapped (I love the games in which she is playable/not entirely useless), and you can't even see her panties! But it's still a must-buy.
The Thousand-Year Door is still, in my opinion, an excessively excellent game. I'm playing it right now!
You can't see Peach's panties in SPP, sorry.
Title: Re: Help! I Slept Through a Generation
Post by: Mega 2 on May 01, 2007, 11:58:56 PM
Hmmm.  I don't know why your username seems familiar.  Anyway I'm sorry to hear the "Sunshine" story sucks.  I'll probably rent it to see how I like it if my Cube deal pans out.  Does it follow that "more adult Mario" promise Nintendo made back when the 128-Bit Era was on the horizon?

And yeah, I'm also all for Peach's empowerment.  That was one of the (many) great things about "Mario R.P.G."  Come to think of it, does that game have an Advance title yet?

B.T.W. that thing you said about "Super Princess Peach" reminds me of how my friend's G.F. jokingly claimed one of Peach's attacks in that game was "blinding white panty-flash" (or something like that).  : )

Post by: BP on May 02, 2007, 12:38:17 AM
More mature stuff in SMSu, no way. in The Thousand-Year Door... muhahahhhaaaahahaahahaa. Well, there's no pr0n or things that would get it any rating other than E, but we finally know that people do kill people for their own benefit in Mario's world (Grubba), and that people take showers... I don't want to spoil anything else.
Unfortunately, the only way to play SMRPG on the road is if you have a laptop, a SNES emulator, and the ROM... none of the "GBA PORT PLZ" petitions are working, and it's impossible to emulate it on the GBA or DS the "illegal" way. It SHOULD be on its way to the Wii Virtual Console soon, however. Not that I need it, my SNES works fine.
We're in a one-on-one conversation of posts here, heh heh heh...
Title: Re: Help! I Slept Through a Generation

I still have a Super N.E.S. too, but it's a temperamental old thing and I'd love to be able to do away with it while still being able to play all the games I have for it (except "Eye of the Beholder"...boy did that ever suck...).  I wish I could get something like the Wii virtual console without shelling out for a Wii.  :(

So can you answer my questions about "Superstar Saga" and the Kart games?

All the Mario Kart games are new games. Super Circuit and Mario Kart DS have some tracks from older games also. I don't know what you mean by "what kind" of RPG, though. It's a pretty good game though. I'm not a huge fan of it however.
Super Circuit is my favorite Mario Kart.
Clean your SNES. :P

B is for Bowser
C is for cat
D is for dope

I don't know what you mean by "what kind" of RPG, though.

I mean, does it have strong R.P.G. elements, or is it just a sort of semi-R.P.G. like those Mana games?
Title: Re: Help! I Slept Through a Generation
Post by: Toad on May 02, 2007, 07:21:46 PM
It was as strong an RPG as Super Mario RPG, in my opinion, but with more Mario elements and in series jokes thrown in.

Pretty much take a look at every Mario title released between Paper Mario and now, with the exception of the Mario Advance titles on GBA (since they're every bit the SNES versions, only portable) and Yoshi's Story on the N64 (terrible Yoshi game. Play at your own risk).

Well, I say to ignore the Mario Advance titles, but Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3 actually is a little more worthwhile: if you can find an E-reader (a device that hooks in to another GBA) and series 1 and 2 of the SMA4:SMB3 Ereader cards, then you'll have access to some neat little features. It's a pity Nintendo started ignoring the Ereader around this time, otherwise there would have been more E-cards made for the device.

Just wanted to point out that a laptop is not the only way to play Super Mario RPG "on the go." The PSP, as adverse as many of you are to it, can also play the game through emulation.

As a big fan of RPGs, and adoring fan of Super Mario RPG, I can highly recommend Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga to you Mega 2.

I'm sickened by the lack of people recommending Yoshi's Island DS. Sure, the game is relentlessly unforgiving in the final stages of the game but the challenge is what made it fun.

Buy it, but don't let it rip your hair out through frustration.

Thank you for alerting me to "Advance 4"/e-Reader, Toad.  I looked it up and it sounds tantalizing, but it seems like it would be too complicated and costly to really be worth it.  I'll keep it in mind, though.

I've always loathed "Yoshi's Island" so I doubt I'll ever buy "Yoshi's Island D.S."

Yoshi's Island ruled (only really played the GBA version, which ruled), and Yoshi's Island DS is decent. It's... not very different from the original, so if you loathed YI you'll loathe YIDS.

"Yoshi's Island" has gained quite a few fans who will sometimes defend it overzealously, so my posting criticisms of the game will just lead bad places (like it did on this board several years ago).  I probably shouldn't have even mentioned that I don't enjoy it.  So let's just drop the subject, okay?

Platformers are fine.  : )

I think you guys need to chill.  I don't feel I need to defend my opinion, since I didn't give it in the context of an argument.  I gave it as a response to Wiggles' post about the sequel for the D.S.  I should have just told him "thanks for the info" and left it at that, but instead I chose to express that I wasn't interested because I didn't like the original game.  I don't see that as a situation where I need to defend or justify my opinion.

I thank the people who aren't overreacting to this.  And if someone really wants to know my criticisms of "Yoshi's Island" that bad they can P.M. me and I'll P.M. them back.

Actually, there was no argument. People around here want just like to try arguing with someone else whenever someone talks of something he personally doesn't like.
