Luigi used to have white clothes like Mario when he has fire power, but since "Super Mario Bros. 2" he's been green.  Why?  Is it something about the pixels or some Japanese thing or what?

I'm not sure but it's probably because

A) He wouldn't look right in SMB2 if he had white overalls he would have a white outline, mustache, ect.

B) The style matches Mario better which makes palette swapping easier or just makes the bros. more uniform in general.

This is just a guess.  Probably due to restrictions in the early NES games the easiest way to do it was to make him where white.  Maybe had to do with the number of colors displayed in a ceertain area.  But with SMB2 and above they were more complicated but technology was better(slightly)

Maybe Nintendo was experimenting with his colors at the time before they settled on green.
