Step 1: Envision idea for new big-name game.
Step 2: Begin developing game.
Step 3: Cut corners in game development.
Step 4: Release game
Step 5: Pretend to be joking when pressed about lack of effort in game

All this, hot on the heels of the flying-Peach-skirt-Wario-farting-two-Toad controversy...

Seriously, I can see it all now when Galaxy 2 is released...
'Ah yes, well we originally looked into recording orchestral music for Super Mario Galaxy 2 just like in the original but decided not to. We realized in order to do that we'd need to have one of the percussionists in the orchestra playing a bongo drum for every song in the game because of Yoshi!'

Following this, the droves of nintendo fanboys will declare whoever said this was joking again, and label everyone who refuses to believe it a racist bigot who does not understand the cultural differences between Japan and apparently the rest of the world.

There was a trope somewhere on TV Tropes where one way to skirt the skirt issue is to ignore physics so that the skirt always covers up even when the girl's upside-down. And I think the solution in the N64 days was to put some solid-color block under the skirt so you couldn't see anything if you did have Peach posed a certain way.

As for problems with animating skirts... well, the commenters already said that Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl handle it flawlessly. Another commenter said no, the dresses in SSBM/SSBB were just tubes with clipping problems. Hey, they looked fine to me. And I figure since Luigi's Mansion mastered the physics of cloth long ago, skirts shouldn't be an issue. If you can't do skirts, then go all Lulu and just have Peach wear a dress made out of belts.

Or just hire a former Rare worker behind Microsoft's back. Rare did all sorts of neat graphical stuff back in the day. Sure, the game framerate will go down to nothing, but you'll get your skirt problem fixed. Plus a cameo by Floyd from Jet Force Gemini.

By the way, orchestrated music with percussion BETTER happen in Galaxy 2. If they go to such pains to recreate the Mario vibe, the least they can do is bring back the Yoshi percussion, even if it's MIDI beats laid over top the music (I liked Mario Sunshine's music, so it's not like I'd notice if they threw some MIDI in there). But if the Yoshi percussion is in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, then I'll shut up.

Dude, skirts are totally hard to animate.

I mean, girls never want to stand long enough for me to finish drawing those [darn] things. They act like I'm some pervert getting a thrill out of drawing skirts or something :P
As a game that requires six friends, an HDTV, and skill, I can see why the majority of TMK is going to hate on it hard.

So I never got past the first level of Jet Force Gemini, sue me. And just because a character died doesn't mean Rare can't bring them back. They brought back Wrinkly's ghost for Donkey Kong 64, didn't they?

Meowrik, the problem with all of your arguments is that while often you may have a glimmer of some legitimate opinion, you make these sweeping, exaggerated accusations that are very rarely true.

Even before you get any responses you've already begun to work overtime on discrediting any dissenting opinion and acting like a martyr. I don't see the need to be so aggressively defensive. But then again, I don't see a need for making threads that seem to be solely for the purpose of riling people up to get a reaction out of them either.

They Changed It Now It Sucks.... TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Vocabulary/Life.

Well, I think there's no problem with pointing out Nintendo's shortcomings because if we didn't, Nintendo would get away with increasingly sub-par efforts (unless enough people spoke up... which is highly unlikely).

Nintendo seems to kinda take a few more days off than normal when profits are up and their products are selling like hotcakes. The Wii and DS are scooping up tons of revenue for Nintendo, so Nintendo is just sitting there with their Cuban cigars again saying, "We have the world by the balls." While they're sitting there enjoying their mountains of money, Microsoft and Sony are plotting ideas that will attempt to trump Nintendo and their systems. When that happens, maybe that's when Nintendo will say "Ah crap... we gotta actually put some more effort into this again" and get their wheels turning.

"Casuals" make up a relatively large chunk of the Wii's sales. What I'm afraid of is when "Wii 2/HD" comes out, the "casuals" will look at it and say, "lol I already have a Wii; I don't need this system" just like when I asked for a Super Nintendo years ago and my parents asked, "Wait, don't you already have a Nintendo? [my NES]." When they see the higher price tag of the next one (and notice that their Wiis are dust traps/the only games they own are "Wii _____" titles, they'll probably steer away from it circling back to the "I already have a Wii/don't play it enough" reason.

It seems a lot of "hardcore" Nintendo players have had a falling out of sorts with Nintendo... some of them saying they won't buy the next one not because the "lack" of good games, but because the awful ratio of good games vs. bad games/mini-game compilations and Nintendo's "new direction." When people defend the good games on Wii, they always tend to fall back on the same handful that have been praised for a while now: Galaxy, Metroid, Zelda, Brawl, Mario Kart, SPM, Wii Sports, and now NSMB Wii, Madworld, etc. as of more recently. (If I didn't name some of your favorite ones, don't kill me). It seems for every good game on the Wii there are 5 mini-game compilation games or Mario Kart clones.

You may argue that developers don't how to utilize the Wii's capabilities. Well, for a lot of them, they've had over 3 years to figure out the architecture, and Nintendo has no excuse, really. Another point: I think the waggle craze is gonna die down. Nintendo went all-in with its motion control decision and it paid off very well. Motion control will be copied by other companies and will become very mainstream-ish soon... so if Nintendo thinks they're gonna be able to ride out the motion control craze forever, I believe they'll be sorely mistaken. They can say "graphics don't matter" all day long, but if Nintendo's Wii 3/4/5 is on par with a 360 when Xbox 1260 or 1440 comes out, I'll probably be annoyed.

What Nintendo Should Do:

They have tons of R&D money to throw around. I say they kill all "lol wii iz for kiddies and lol ps2 grafix" bullcrap and pull out allllll the friggin' stops for their next system. Make a system that has the Wii's innovative motion control system, but at the same time, have every capability these other systems hide behind, as well. Blu-ray (maybe), external hard drive, 720i/1080i/1080p capabilities, an awesome storefront, an online component with tons more support and user-friendliness, the banishment of friend codes/everything that restricts online play, way more DLC support (who wouldn't want downloadable Mario worlds or a create & share level editor, for example?), etc. etc. etc.

If Nintendo could pull that off, I think they'd sweep the whole gaming market off its feet. No longer would the Wii's relatively low horsepower be a deal-breaker for people, and no longer could the Crashbox 360/Play-With-Yourself Station 3 guys say, "lol teh grafix suk." They'd have nothing to hide behind if Nintendo would just bite the bullet and stomp the other companies' asses into the ground with the system to end all systems.

If they did all that, they'd have to top it with the next system after that. Not that I don't want all that, of course. Just saying..

True, but it'd be cool if they could take as big a step as other consoles have. For example:

-N64 to GCN
-Xbox to Xbox 360
-PS2 to PS3

Those systems are leaps and bounds over their predecessors. Sure, they're not $1500 mega systems that can play games and burn people with lasers all in one pass, but they were still making good, steady progress there.

[[[[ I made a graph which crappily illustrates the consoles' progress in relation to another. This graph is a rough approximation, of course; take it lightly. Also, I'm not basing this just off graphical capabilities, etc., but also other things I mentioned: storefront, online capabilities & ergonomics, game quality as a whole, DLC availability, customization, and other features. In this graph, let's assume all the last gen consoles are all equally matched and an equal step up from their predecessors (where it applies) and their subsequent step to next-gen. I'm afraid that if Nintendo keeps following the "hey they like gameplay and nothing else. They don't want high definition, good wi-fi, DLC, a marketplace, or anything else. They just want gameplay" formula, this is what might happen in the long run. ]]]]

I hope they don't have the Yoshi percussion. I find it annoying. It always sounds tacked on, and ruins the song.

I remember not liking some things Forest Guy said in the past, but that's completely irrelevant now because I think that's the most I've agreed with a post in recent memory.
