Title: Censoring
Post by: Glorb on February 25, 2009, 02:29:32 PM
Should moderators edit posts to remove percieved offensive language, when the [autocensor] already does that?

There is only one right answer.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Captain Jim on February 25, 2009, 03:28:24 PM
Will the wrong answer be censored?
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Turtlekid1 on February 25, 2009, 03:29:02 PM
If people try to get around the filter and succeed, they're still breaking a rule, so yes, they should be manually censored.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Eclipsed Moon on February 25, 2009, 03:54:36 PM
It's not a question about getting around the filter, or words that aren't on the filter, or anything, but about words that are already filtered out getting censored for anyone who already opted out of the filter.

Offensive posts should be edited/removed. But mods might take advantage of their power. Look at history. Power is taken advantage of every time there isn't limits. And many times when there is limits.

Offensive posts should be edited/removed.

This coming from a guy who talked about a dream he had with his naked teacher.

Well, let's face it; you can't control what you dream.  You can control what you say/do/type in reality.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Kojinka on February 25, 2009, 05:19:09 PM
Leave the mild swears alone.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: BP on February 25, 2009, 05:43:39 PM
I don't especially like swearing and I'd discourage it... but censoring them if the censors get them is ridiculous. If the censors don't get them, it's time to enhance the censors.

Which are optional for a reason.

Edit: My signature (<censored>) has nothing to do with censors on the Fungi Forums. It's a joke from the chatroom.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: nensondubois on February 25, 2009, 05:51:05 PM
I feel that if an individual finds cussing/cursing/swearing offensive, he/she has two options.

1. Has the option under his/her profile to censor most common swear words via a preset word bank.
2. He/She should just leave or deal with it. "If you can't stand the heat, than leave the kitchen."

I personal find option 1 more reasonable.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: ShadowBrain on February 25, 2009, 07:11:00 PM
Either there should be no auto-censor or mod should leave swears alone unless they're complex statements.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: FlamingBlueMario on February 25, 2009, 07:27:36 PM
Swear words are filthy, poorly chosen words that we use to express our anger or frustration towards certain people or things. Those type of words shouldn't be tolerated anywhere. Even on the internet. The auto-censors should be enhanced/upgraded so that guests and members here don't have to cringe at every swear word they might see while reading a post. And those of us who do swear a lot should look for alternative words to use or just try not to say it at all. It's a bad habit, it offends people, makes you look foolish, and doesn't make you look cool.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Luigalaxy on February 25, 2009, 07:27:56 PM
Censoring is not fun!

Anyways, since a censor is set up, I believe that the mods don't need to edit the posts of people who swear.

Are you referring to Sapph?

Why can't English be one of those languages that doesn't have profanity?
Title: Re: Censoring

There are languages without profanity? I don't believe that.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Chupperson Weird on February 25, 2009, 08:02:29 PM
Japanese, for one. That is, they don't have "swear words" like English does. You can still insult people or whatever.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: The Chef on February 25, 2009, 08:16:49 PM
They're just words. They're only offensive based on the context you use them in. If I swear in a manner that is not intended to personally attack someone, then it shouldn't be a big deal.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: PaperLuigi on February 25, 2009, 08:56:50 PM
Yeah, the Japanese language doesn't really contain swear words. This is why whenever Sakura says "Shannaro!" in Naruto, it can translate out as "Alright!" or the more profane "$#@% yeah!"

Subbing companies have field days with the Japanese language. The Sonic X sub features colorful language when other, less profane words, could be used.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Chupperson Weird on February 25, 2009, 09:15:56 PM
Well, a lot of time, that type of translation is more or less in the right spirit. It's just that in Japan, saying it wouldn't be offensive. (To Chef: i.e. not offensive in any context as the word applies to English sentences.)

Keep in mind also that beyond what the forum offers, many browsers (Firefox w/ Greasemonkey and Opera for two) allow the loading of JavaScript files which allow the user to remove/replace any string (regular expressions, even) the user does not wish to see in most instances.  Worst case scenario?  You filter out too much and/or you have to see what words you're filtering to begin with.  If you have a problem with images, block all images or block any server that hosts them.

If any of the above sounds like a bad idea, then why have you only started now to think?
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: TEM on February 25, 2009, 09:53:52 PM
Clearly the solution to this problem is to convert the board to Japanese only.

Title: Re: Censoring

Quote from: Pat Sajak
The explosion of technology has, it seems to me, led to a strange twisting of the whole freedom of speech debate. For many, the argument has appeared to advance from protecting all forms of speech to protecting all forms of speech in all arenas. In other words, creating safe havens is, somehow, censorship. Requiring printed lyrics so that parents can monitor their kids’ listening habits is, in this new world, tantamount to censorship. (Just ask Tipper Gore the problems that can cause).

It’s one thing to rail against so-called bluenoses who are trying to dictate what others can and should do; it’s another to insist that no one should be able to shield himself or his family from what he—for whatever reason—may find offensive. All any of us should ask is the freedom to choose what we want or don’t want. Why can’t we opt-in for that?

I won't hesitate to swear (here, at least), but only if I feel I really "need to". I think swear words should be used to express extreme emotion; swear all the time, the words lose their impact.
Title: Re: Censoring

Yeah, same here. When someone does something outrageous, I'll probably respond with the usual assortment of "curse" words. They're just words after all.

We'd most certainly lose that war, Glorb. Black Mage is much cooler than the Forum Games board.

Title: Re: Censoring

Black Mage has declared war on FG, although he's totally down with images that say "[dukar] Bricks" in them.

I understand you're implying I'm a hypocrite, but I'm only one man. I don't read every thread and thoroughly inspect every image that gets posted (and for a good reason). If you would point me to where the image is posted, I'll do you a favor and edit that one out too.

As far as I understand the rules, gentlemen, you're free to curse all you want as the censor will pick that up and save the "innocents" whom may be viewing the board with the censor on from potentially offensive material. However if people begin circumventing the censor, either through posting images with curse words in them or otherwise, there's nothing I can do but remove that content.

Look, I've always tried to stay pretty hands off in moderating the board. And for the longest time everyone had done a pretty good job of keeping it to the level, and my "moderator" activity was very limited. Recently, though, there's been much more in the way of cursing, "raunchy" images and discussions. I'm fine with cursing, and don't find it offensive. I've been known to belt them out in person. But there's a difference between in-person discussions and forum discussions. Any decent person doesn't go around Toys 'R Us dropping F-bombs. I'm not saying you can't swear, but just keep in mind this is a Mario forum that attracts young kids like we all were once. You can still use your curse words that you all hold so dear, but just do it responsibly and in ways that the censor will pick up.

You might not believe me, but I don't like editing your posts any more than you like me doing it. I know some people were upset that I closed that Harem thread, and I figured that deep down you all understood why and no further explanation would be needed. If any of you had serious concerns about it, I would have been more than happy to discuss it with you through PMs. Or, if you think I took it too far and were beyond discussion with me, you could complain to Deezer or the administration. But there's no reason to continue complaining about it in threads where it doesn't belong.

Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Glorb on June 25, 2009, 06:17:38 AM
I was going to suggest a new "adults-only" board where one could post racy pictures with impunity, but just as the censor debate has lead to people swearing in stupid ways, that would just lead to everybody posting porn. That, and it'd turn into 4chan in like five minutes.

But just now I came from a thread with six posts in a row talking about grinding weiners. I'm upset that my post was deleted when many far worse posts are made and tolerated every day, even if you have the profanity filter on.

Just found this:

Offensive posts should be edited/removed. But mods might take advantage of their power. Look at history. Power is taken advantage of every time there isn't limits. And many times when there is limits.

AAaaaahahaahahahahahaha

hooo.

I don't care to see or hear swearwords at my age, I know, I know, "You're 13 and should get over it", but I choose not to.
I think it should auto censor swearwords, and have ops look over things to make sure people don't get around the censor.

Turn the filter on if you don't like swear words.

Yeah, that gets rid of going through almost 300,000 posts (old topics included, just to make sure our Guests aren't blinded with swearing since they like to look at very old topics) and editing them all.

All swear words should be censord! I'm 13 and I HATE all swear words! But words like "heck" or "crap" or "dang" don't bother me in the least bit! So all posts should be reviewed and censord!
Not really a bump, considering how often this board is posted in.
Anyway, I'm too lazy to find out if that's real or more sarcasm than can be handled on the internet.
What does "censord" mean, anyway?

That's what I gathered as well.

I personally believe that manual censoring is certainly unnecessary; that being said, I think that certain users should stop trying to evade the censor.

Yeah, that gets rid of going through almost 300,000 posts (old topics included, just to make sure our Guests aren't blinded with swearing since they like to look at very old topics) and editing them all.

One certain topic springs to mind.  If there's any swearing in that particular topic (which I don't believe there is), it might be wise to censor it.

Guests don't look through the board history.

They all just look at the Mario Kart coloring pages thread for some reason. Some unknown, creepy, unsettling reason.

Seriously, what is going on in that thread that attracts so much attention?

Perhaps James Elston's website has IP appenages which routinely trace themselves to sites which link to it. In the name of science, I'll put the link here to see if any guests flock:

And now... we wait.

I'm beginning to think that this board would shut down without the high volume of views on that one thread.  I wonder what would happen if someone screwed with the link on TMK and swapped that thread's thread number with another.

Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Lizard Dude on February 14, 2011, 02:37:14 AM
Was there any point in reviving the thread made to complain about exactly what happened? That would be a yes.

Evading the censor is against the rules. Swearing is not. Sapphira is censoring our already-automatically-censored posts and it ****es us off. She's not doing her job: she's abusing her power to modify our rule-abiding posts to fit her warped personal ethics.

a.k.a. the exact thing people have been complaining about in this thread for years.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Kimimaru on February 14, 2011, 04:08:03 AM
I'm fine with swearing as long as it isn't aimed at anyone. You're right, though; Sapphira shouldn't edit posts unless they break the rules.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: BP on February 17, 2011, 06:58:12 PM
Thread unlocked. The rule is not "Do not swear," it's "do not avoid the censor." Doing vigilante modding to remove content that the rules don't prohibit is... mehhh

No hard feeling Sapph, but c'mon.

It still boggles my mind how she stayed in power all these years, even after abusing the **** out of it and being borderline psychotic with the [dukar] that she did. And I'm not just talking about the censorship of profanity, but also when ever someone taunted her god (who doesn't exist btw :) ) even saying "for God sakes" was off limits.

If this is how we're all going to react when Sapphira censors a couple of words, then, quite frankly, we don't deserve the right to swear. Yes, Sapphira shouldn't have edited what was already censored out, but is whinging about it like spoilt children really going to help?
Title: Re: Censoring

Title: Re: Censoring

**** censorship.

This has been QFT'd to a ridiculous level, but I DON'T CARE.

Saph, just out of curiosity, why censor if there's a setting where you can switch swears on or off? I mean, if people don't want to see them (Including you) you could just switch it on. (Sorry for bringing back the Saph argument.)
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Insane Steve on February 26, 2011, 08:53:11 PM
See, I do think the best solution is "swear ratings" like coolkid mentioned, where you can choose to censor nothing, censor only the more egregious swears, censor all but the more "tame" swears, or censor anything offensive, but that requires coding and is probably more of a pain than it's worth.

And, while I don't think attacking Sapph's personal dislike of swearing is cool, I actually have issues with the whole "editing things when people with higher/equal ranks and stuff don't care" complex. That reeks of power tripping, which isn't cool no matter who does it. Especially if said "self-censoring" exists -- then you start forcing your beliefs onto others via the law, which is pretty much the bane of my existence.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: Turtlekid1 on February 26, 2011, 08:58:08 PM
Imposition of beliefs is the reason laws exist.  That's not the issue here.  The issue is that the rule of law in this case doesn't call for manual censorship, and people are overreacting to Sapphira's doing it.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: coolkid on February 26, 2011, 09:25:59 PM
Laws exist to prevent chaos. How the X are we overreacting? She's forcing her beliefs upon others. It's really no big deal, but you act like we're spawning huge all-caps rants or something. We're mildly disappointed over her abusing her power, and that's it.
Title: Re: Censoring
Post by: PaperLuigi on February 27, 2011, 02:26:59 AM
Offensiveness isn't grounds for legal coercion, and if a person in authority censors someone, the rest of us have every right to complain about it.

Moral busybodies need to blow it out their ass.
