Title: The Best Video Games You've Never Heard Of
Post by: Mega 2 on August 28, 2008, 12:48:24 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a thread for underrated games.  I think an exchange of favorite obscure titles could enrich many a gamer's life, and maybe even spur some interesting discussion.

First up I'll nominate the "Turrican" series (I've played "Mega Turrican" for Sega Genesis and "Super Turrican" for S.N.E.S., which are two different games, not ports of the same).  These are very addictive, very arcade-like techno-space-themed sidescrollers with amazing music.  It is very easy to compare them with the "Metroid" games of their time, and it is very easy to see the "Metroid" games' superiority, but at the same time this series deserves plenty of kudos (and sequels) that just don't seem to be out there.

Secondly, "Skyblazer" for S.N.E.S.  I don't remember hearing anything about this game when it came out (1993), nor do I remember knowing it existed before this summer.  Bought it, almost done with it, amazed by it.  Immensely quirky, immensely enjoyable sidescroller with beautiful backgrounds and creative enemies and levels.  I really don't know why this wasn't popular.  It's not at the absolute upper echelon of S.N.E.S. sidescrollers where games like "Super Mario World" and "Super Metroid" live, but it's not far away.  Definitely more than you expect from an unknown title.  It's not on the Virtual Console, but if you have a working Super Nintendo I suggest you buy a cartridge of it (it's available for very cheap online).

I'll stop ranting about my own (ancient) favorites and open the floor to others.

Normally I'd talk about a bunch of somewhat obscure shmups (and possibly some that aren't obscure at all but are still great), but I really need to get to bed. Maybe later I'll write up some more stuff. Also, I have no idea how obscure the following game is, if it's even obscure at all.

Tetris Blast (also called Bombliss) is a rather neat variation of the classic puzzler. It uses a few odd pieces in addition to the seven basic ones, and pieces randomly contain bombs. Instead of lines being cleared normally upon completion, all bombs within completed lines detonate and take out any blocks (and bombs) caught within the blast - the more lines completed at once, the larger the explosions will be. Lines that contain no bombs when completed merely count for the next line that does contain bombs. There are a few versions of the game, most of which are Japan-only - my favorite version is Super Bombliss, mainly for its soundtrack; however, the version I actually own is the GB version of Tetris Blast.

One of my favorite platformers of all time (in fact, probably number 1 after all the Mario ones, and ahead of some of them already) is Plok on the SNES. A little yellow and red guy who attacks by shooting his limbs at enemies. A lot of the game is named after sewing terminology, for some reason (Cotton Island, a boss fight against the Bobbins Bros., all in the archipelago of Akryllic), as just another of the game's quirks. Has a lot of personality for a SNES platformer. Considering it has no save or password (which the creators admitted was one of its greatest flaws), it's a bit long, but if you're going to be playing it on an emulator (it won't be out on the VC for a while, if ever; the Pickford Bros. own the rights to the character, but whatever company bought out Tradewest owns the rights to the original programming, and they haven't gotten around to talking to each other yet, so neither of them can do anything with the original game right now), it's not much of an issue. And the music is beautiful. Excellent use of the SNES's sound chip.

For a more recent game, you should really go out and buy Blast Works for the Wii as soon as possible. I haven't had much time with it yet, but I've had enough to see the amazingness. The main game is like a cross between Gradius and Katamari. It's a side-scrolling shooter, and when you shoot down enemy planes, you can catch them with your own plane to attach them on, and they'll start spewing out more bullets at your enemies from wherever they are. Even parts of the bosses can fall off and get attached to you. When you're not playing, you can customize basically everything. You can make your own levels, ships, enemies, bosses, and weapons with some really powerful, but still pretty graspable editors.

Toy Commander was a great game on the Dreamcast that not a lot of people played. I'm sure some of you guys on this board have heard of it, and maybe some of you even own it, but it's still relatively unknown amongst games. Toy Commander was one of the first titles released on the Dreamcast, but it didn't receive the publicity that equally good games like Sonic Adventure and Soul Caliber got. I loved this game when I was younger just because it fought like a traditional 360 aerial combat fighter, only with toys. Probably not one of Sega's huge financial successes, but one of the better Dreamcast games (and the Dreamcast is famous for having some pretty [darn] good early titles to its name).

I could've sworn there was a topic about this before. Nevertheless, I'll post in this one anyway.

I'd say my favorite underrated game is Space Station: Silicon Valley for the N64. You were basically this little microchip that could inhabit and control robotic animals, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, dogs can attack and have an average jump, sheep can't attack but can float (think Peach in SMB2), mice are fast, but aren't waterproof. Often times you'll need the right animal for the task at hand and it can be quite the head scratcher.

How underrated is underrated? Like Chibi-Robo? 'Cause that's actually one of my favorite games, period.

And then there's Okami, which is underrated only in the sense that tons of people won't buy it for some reason. I mean, it's not in my top five, but it was definitely worth the price of admission.

Well, I like Valis III for Genesis (I've never played the Turbo CD version). It's a somewhat average platformer with really really really awesome music.

:( I have that but it doesn't work.

But then again, it might if I clean it up a bit.

Hmm.. underrated.. hmm..

I still own Uniracers, a Snes side-scrolling racing game. The 'vehicles' were these unicycles that had different personalities, and the tracks themseleves were varied and interesting. Each of the uniracers seemed to move at more-or-less the same speed, but you could speed up yours by doing tricks while in the air (things like spins, table-tops, and rolls..)

I don't recall if we ever finished that game, mostly because we just had so much fun playing it and Donkey Kong Country 2 (which came out at around the same time).

I remember "Uniracers!"  It was advertised a lot, but I never played it.

I'll add "Overkill" to the list.  It's a vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up like "Galaga" for P.C.  Neat stages, neat enemies (several of which are enemy types with different species for each planet), and genuinely challenging on the right difficulty setting.  Unfortunately it's short.

I would include "Space Harrier," "Astro Warrior," and maybe "Kid Chameleon," but it's been so long since I played them that they might not have been nearly as good as I remember.

Dynamite Headdy, and the old side-scrolling Duke Nukems, though I'm not sure if those count.

Hey that one is cool.
I think I will say Barney Hide n Seek. That's a true cult classic, not like Earthbound.
Also, Chavez. (Actually, I haven't played that one too much, just like five minutes, so I can't say if it is good or not.)
The Incredible Machine.
Chips Challenge.
Chu chu rocket
I want to say Megaman 64, but I lost the game without progressing much. Ignore this line please.
Finally, I want to add that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is terribly underrated.

Now Twilight Princess... that's underrated (by some).
Title: Re: The Best Video Games You've Never Heard Of
Post by: penguinwizard on August 29, 2008, 10:37:59 PM
I'm probably going to list entries I've mentioned before in another thread, but here we go.

Ardy Lightfoot (SNES)
It's one of those games where the controls are lame and the difficulty occasionally ridiculous, but it compensates with charm in the visuals, some surprisingly good music, and... er, I guess that's it. Reminds me of SNES Lion King, although I think Lion King is slightly better. Anyway, it's a side-scrolling platformer where you play as Ardy Lightfoot, a meerkat guy with all the typical side-scroller moves. You can bounce on your tail like a pogo stick to reach high areas. Your buddy in this quest is Pec, a penguin (although he looks like a blue blob to me) who you can throw at enemies in a yo-yo fashion. Pec will go ahead and eat any enemies he touches. Later on you'll also find a powerup to turn Pec into a flying thing. If you hit an enemy, Pec disappears, but you'll find chests along the way to regain Pec. Get hit without Pec and you're done for. But you can still attack enemies by bouncing on them with your pogo tail. And a very useful tip I found out thanks to Nintendo Power: Hold Up for a couple seconds while standing still, and Ardy will pull out a screen thing to make himself invisible. Enemies can pass right by you if you have the screen up. Release to put the screen away, otherwise it goes away after a few seconds.

Chameleon Twist (N64)
Goofy little game that I think was early in the N64's lifespan. Probably was because the four characters you could play as looked nothing like chameleons. Some decent challenge and puzzles, cutesy perhaps. I tried playing one of the Gex games but couldn't get into it, and I never tried Glover, so this is the only low-budget 3D-platformer ripoff game I know of for N64.

Destruction Derby 64 (N64)
Don't know if this game's obscure, but come on, you win races by crashing into cars as hard as you can. How can that not be fun?

Lion King: Simba's Mighty Adventure (GBC)
This is the best Lion King game I've ever played. Granted this is next to SNES Lion King (I complain about its controls and frustrating difficulty), so that's not saying a lot. Looks and sounds a bit odd, yes. Music is either entertaining or gets on your nerves fast. The Timon and Pumbaa minigames are just as pointless as ever. But once you get used to the weird controls, it seems to control better than SNES Lion King (maybe it's just that there aren't as many cliffs to fall off of). The movie screenshots before and after each level are cool. And it even gets a little into Lion King II at the end.

On The Ball (SNES)
This was known in arcades or Japan or something as Camel Try. You have to get a ball through a maze. But the trick here is that you're rotating the maze itself, not the ball. The only control you have over the ball is making it speed up or jump. You'll also deal with pinball bumpers and gravitational pulling things and having to avoid X blocks... see, you have a certain time limit to finish each level. When you finish a level, the remaining time is carried over to the next plus like 20 seconds. If you hit an X block, 2 or maybe 5 seconds are taken away, giving you less time to get to the finish. Some levels may have gravity inverted so the ball falls up. Some levels might restrict how far you can move the maze so you'd have to bounce the ball along. Many challenging levels, amazing music, surreal pictures whenever you finish a group of levels... I recommend trying it out, this was one of my favorite SNES games.

Soul Blazer (SNES)
This is the first of a trilogy of RPG games. Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. I can see the influence of this game on Illusion of Gaia because you attacked enemies you saw on the screen (instead of having to go to a separate battle mode screen). But I never felt that Soul Blazer was an RPG, really. It was too arcade-like for that. What I got out of it was that you go to an area, annihilate every enemy you can find, then go back to town and advance to the next plot point. Then go back down to the enemy area and blast more enemies. I never got far in the game, I was still in the first town (if there were any towns after that). But it was still fun.

Super Tetris 3 (SNES)
Japan-only game, but it's almost completely comprehensible (maybe I got a translated version) and offers the best version of Tetris I've played (more so than The New Tetris). Addictive music (I love their version of Parorinka), some guy shouts out "Single!" "Double!" "Triple!" "TETRIS!" as you make lines, appealing visuals. I like how the background for a Tetris game changes as you go up in levels, so the sky is daytime at first and then eventually goes to night. Also comes with Magicaliss, which reminds me of Tetris 2 in that the blocks are different colors and grouped colors will disappear, and another version of Bombliss called Sparkliss (what we may know as Tetris Blast). Sparkliss has fantasy backgrounds. The first background of Contest Mode for Sparkliss has a couple slightly-animated dragons on either side of the well, thought that was neat.

I wonder what people thought of Hybrid Heaven and Winback: Covert Operations, both for N64. I never tried them, but people hyped up Hybrid Heaven like crazy.

Games I've heard of before that have already been posted in this thread:
Chip's Challenge (very fun)
Plok (played it LONG ago. Pretty much the only thing I remember is the music for the first stage, which is surprisingly good)
Skyblazer (meh, kind of fun)
Space Station: Silicon Valley (cool ideas, but too smart for me)
Tetris Blast and Super Bombliss (too bad I'm terrible at that game)
Uniracers (one of the best SNES games EVER - woo! By the way, the developer for Uniracers was who we now know as Rockstar North)

Ardy Lightfoot (SNES)
Good times.
Chameleon Twist (N64)
Concept is a little interesting, actual game falls a bit flat.  And I'd say it was maybe a bit more middish in the lifespan, but eh 18 months in I guess.
On The Ball (SNES)
Good, even better if you have a mouse, and better still if the mouse works as well as it's supposed to.
Soul Blazer (SNES)
It wasn't until very recently that I finally checked this out, and while I can understand that there are things in the games to have something with the other two action RPGs, I definitely include the ActRaiser games as part of this series.  I can't help it if you're going to use similar graphics, refer to the Master, and include monster lairs.
Super Tetris 3 (SNES)
It is indeed completely comprehensible.  My Tetris of Choice and I've been playing it a lot again lately, really like getting ranked. (Gamma right now)

By the way, the developer for Uniracers was who we now know as Rockstar North)
/me smiles knowingly.

Actually, the opening cutscene showed the main character as an ordinary chameleon chasing a white rabbit down a vase which contained a portal to another world, Alice in Wonderland-style. Apparently getting sent to this other world causing him to turn into a humanoid with gloves, shoes and a backpack.

For the record, Glover was a pretty unique concept, but upon going back to it the other day, I can tell you the game is as slow and clunky as molasses with chunks of iron in it.

I really enjoyed Bomberman 64, although I doubt it's underrated.  Does anyone have any GBA recommendations?  The only games I have for GBA and GBC are all Mario, Pokemon RBY and Silver, and two Sonics; the rest consist of a TMNT game, a pinball game, Tony Hawk 3, and an old GBC game called Twubble about the Looney Toons.  Those last few games were all pretty bad.

I never played it myself, but Army Men: Sarge's Heroes for the N64 was very fun to watch.  I guess I admire the variety in level structure and location, although nowadays Pikmin is the superior.  I've never played Pikmin either.

I just remembered a Chester Cheetah game for the SNES. I used to rent it when I was little, and I had a lot of fun with it. You must go to several worlds to collect maps that open new worlds. The bosses were cool, like a fat lady in a swimsuit that attacked with an umbrella in the beach level, and a robot in the farm level (huh?). And Chester had the mysterious ability to fly!
I think the game was hard, because you have to find the map piece on each level or beating the level would be useless, and they were pretty well hidden. And you died with one hit, except, of course, if you managed to get a bag of Cheetos, which revive you.
And you fought the last boss, which is somewhat similar to Kronk from The Emperors New Groove, in a rocket launching car during a sunset. Woah Chester is 2 ocol!!!!

That game was HARDCOR3!!!!!1
Well probably not.
I still want to get it, even if it is just to here the Boss Music. I still remember it. Well, just like 2 seconds of it.

Conclusion: Buy CHEETOS. And try out this game, even if it is only to make fun of me for liking an advergame.

Sonic CD is another game that's a tad underrated because it was released for the relatively obscure Sega CD (an attachment to Sega Genesis). It's one of my favorite Sonic games...I bet most of you have at least heard of it. Still, it's underrated when compared to Sonic 1, 2 and 3.

I realize it, because I'm terrible at RE4 and keep getting my head chopped off. RE1, meanwhile, I can get a fair distance into, beat with a walkthrough, and I like the different areas much better. My favorite's still Aqua Ring though for the water effects and great music.

I wouldn't consider it under-rated, just overlooked due to the system it was on.

Yeah, I guess you're right.

BTW, Sonic Heros was okay. Not fantastically great like Sonic Adventure 2 (one of the last really good Sonic games), but still acceptable when compared to Sonic 2006.

Sometimes I imagine what me and my friends' powers would be if we were a Sonic Heroes team. I'd probably be Fly, since I have a long, Dixie-Kong-style ponytail right now.

Okay. Fine. Guys can have ponytails, but only if they can take care of their hair to begin with! That man clearly doesn't. It looked like some dead animal was crawling up his back or something.

Heck, it was annoying how he tried to copy me in just about every way (ponytail included). Normally it's a good thing when a parent and child share an interest. However, I have to draw the line right here.

Here's ones I agree with on that site:

NES
Little Nemo Dream Master
Snake Rattle and Roll
Batman
Golgo 13
Mach Rider
Barker Bill's Trick Shooting
To the Earth

Genesis
Rocket Knight Adventures
Knuckles Chaotix
Bonanza Bros.
Disney's Aladdin
Disney's Lion King (somewhat, at least)
Quackshot: Starring Donald Duck
Ristar
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (somewhat)
Ranger-X
Comix Zone
Gauntlet IV
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (funny thing is, I used to hate it)
Championship Pro-Am

SNES
Cool Spot (based on playing the Genesis port)
Axelay
Wario's Woods
Super Tennis

Saturn
Clockwork Knight

Playstation
Tomba! & Tomba! 2 (this site has good taste..)

GameCube
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
XIII

Which leads me to realize I haven't played a lot of games, though a bunch of games on that list I didn't agree with, such as Ironsword on the NES. And I have tons of poorly-known games that are actually good.

Oh yeah! Little Nemo is a great game (and a great movie!) I still recall it coming out about the same time as SMB3, and I loved it. When are they going to put that on the VC..? They're probably not, but you never know..

Now, what about the game Tiny Toon Adventures on the NES? You started as Buster, and could switch between Dizzy, Plucky or Furball depending on who you picked as your partner at the beginning of each world. If I recall, Plucky could glide (and was the best swimmer), Dizzy could spin, and Furball could climb vertical walls.

That was a fun game, and I kick myself for not getting it.. I could have either saved money for it, or bought SMB2 from a kid that lived in our apartment complex. *sigh*

I can vouch for "Aladdin" for Genesis and "Wario's Woods" for Super N.E.S. being fun, but I think "Batman" for N.E.S. is just frustrating.  My buddy loved "Quackshot" but I never played it due to my belief that a video game based on a Disney cartoon couldn't possibly be good.  Obviously this was before I was talked into trying "Aladdin."

Has anyone played "Cybernator" or "Demon's Crest?"  Those are said to be great, overlooked games.

hat's funny is I consider Sonic CD OVERrated. That's the thing with these types of disscussions. Not many people will have a certain game...but then  the ones that have it and love it become fanatic and make it sound better than it is. Then people who never played it go into it with high excpectations and feel dissapointed.I didn't play Sonic CD until the Gems collection, and I found the time travel gimmick annoying and distracting from beating beating the levels the way I'd like to. The music and atmosphere was great, but it doesn't hold up as well as the Genesis games to me.

As far as games people don't appreciate or know that well...

Legend of the Mystical Ninja(SNES) , Sonic 3D Blast(Saturn version), Ristar(Genesis), Fighters Megamix(Saturn) and Parasite Eve(Playstation).

I almost want to nominate the Saturn as a system people haven't heard of. lol Obviously people have, but I have to stop myself from just naming gems iff that system like Panzar Dragoon saga, Bug! 1 & 2, Fighting Vipers, etc

On the topic of that game's multiple portings, I actually played the PC version before I semi-knew the original(s) even existed. I eventually procured the original when I got Sonic Mega Collection, and the only difference I could discern from that version was that it was raining in level 2 (I think).

The discussion on this thread reminded me that I have a copy of "Wario's Woods."  I bought it online about 8 years ago, then put it away after a couple weeks.  The furthest I got was to round 26, and toward the end of my playing it it was really frustrating.  Anyway, I found my cartridge a couple weeks ago.  On my first game I played for 2½ hours and got to round 67 before I got a game over, despite not having played it in years and being increasingly tired while I played it.  So yeah, that games a lot easier (and thus more fun) than I remembered it.  Or rather, I got a lot better at it somehow.

For the SNES version, I got to level 80-something before quitting in frustration, because by then you're blasting those annoying mushroom guys that need to be bombed two times in quick succession. And I managed to get through the 1-P mode... eventually... I think that mode just takes a lot of combos to clear successfully.

But when playing the NES version, I quit after about level 20 because it was so boring. Maybe the visual stimulation wasn't there, or they just weren't throwing in new monsters quickly enough (I don't recall seeing any nifty cutscenes after the 20th level). I remember the SNES game being somewhat tedious after a while too... I probably got through the 1-P mode because of all the neat characters... but surely it must be something, because I don't find Tetris Attack boring at all (but then, that game moves at a faster pace).

Yeah, the furthest I've gotten is round 83.  The bad guys shouldn't be allowed to throw down waves of those double-kill mushrooms.  That's just sadistic.  The 2-P mode isn't bad, but I don't find it as fun s 1-P (even when 1-P is being ridiculous).  I'm also disappointed that the pumpkinhead guy isn't named "Pumpkinhead" in honor of the "classic" horror film.  : )

I probably should've mentioned that my parents have no trouble passing 100 with eight or nine lives remaining. When I feel like sitting down and playing the game, I can easily do so as well. Also, I finished the VS COM mode back when we had our first SNES, before either of my parents finished the round game, and I don't remember the AI ever being too ridiculous to my eleven-year-old self.

Neither variety of double-bomb monster is really that bad - the diagonal guys are the ones you need to watch out for.

Pretty much just my parents (less my mom than my dad, although I blame her for my shmup obsession - she spent a lot of time playing Galaga while pregnant), myself, and, to a lesser extent, my younger sister (although my youngest brother can get insane scores in Crazy Taxi). My other brother does play games, but he mainly plays the same JRPGs and driving games repeatedly, and thinks co-op gaming and puzzle games are plagues on humanity.

Sorry to double post AND bump an old topic, but it is related!..

I don't know if this is the right thread for it, but I can't find the other thread about old games (it might be one that I started, but I don't remember what I called it..)

I was thinking of this old PC game the other day: You piloted this hovercar (In first person perspective) and you had to capture flags before a team of three other hovercars did. The flags would appear in random places on the field, and often there would be one of the enemy cars that was a seeker (that would find the flags for them) and the other two would get the items and try to trip you up with them.

If an enemy car did get a flag, you could still beat it out of them with one of the offensive weapons (I want to say there were missiles, but I could be wrong..) There was a jumping item that allowed you to reach areas that were floating over the main area (often a flag would be on one of these when I played). There were also these magnetic floor panels that you would get stuck to for a short time if you drove over one of them.

Your car was blue, maybe, and the enemy cars were red.

Anybody have any idea what game this is? I want to play it again. :D

Warning: Lots of games ahead. Many of you may have already heard of some of these.

Defense Grid: The Awakening (http://store.steampowered.com/app/18500/) and Immortal Defense (http://studioeres.com/immortal/), both tower defense games. For those who don't know, tower defense is a sub-genre of real-time strategy games in which you build towers that kill advancing waves of enemies, which are usually confined to a set path. Most of these games are Flash-based (see: GemCraft (http://armorgames.com/play/1716/gemcraft) and Desktop Tower Defense, a DS version of which is being released soon), but a few, such as these two, are stand-alone.

I-Fluid (http://www.i-fluid.com/). A platformer in which you play as a drop of water. I don't recall if Lizard Dude mentioned this here, but it's because of him mentioning it in #tmk when the demo was released ages ago that I bought it during the Steam holiday sale.

Peggle and Bejeweled Twist (http://www.popcap.com/). Most people here have already partially heard of at least one of these (whether via buying the Orange Box on PC and discovering Peggle Extreme or just being aware of Bejeweled), and I'm just here to finish the job. Peggle is sort of a mix between pinball and pachinko, with power-ups and classical music thrown in; a DS version (ported by Q? Entertainment, of all people) containing both of the full-length PC games and new bonus levels was released a little over two weeks ago. (The PC version of the original Peggle is available for $5 until the end of the month, and the XBLA version hit a week ago.) Bejeweled Twist takes the infamous match-3 formula and turns it on its side, then on its head - instead of switching gems to make matches, the player rotates groups of four gems to do so. As it turns out, this and the removal of the "you have to make a match every turn" rule of match-3 are the kind of changes that turns an unfun game into a great timesuck for casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Eternity's Child. Best at sucking, anyway. To this day Lizard Dude blames me for his purchase of this steaming pile of crap (despite it being Sunbun's fault for saying to buy the game) - and also he didn't get the achievement for purchasing the game and I did. I'm not linking to it because none of you should want to submit yourselves to this torture. There was a Wii version in development, but I have no idea what happened to it.

Trials 2: Second Edition (http://store.steampowered.com/app/16600/). Like the incredibly difficult racing in TrackMania but wish it was in dirtbike form? This is the game for you. Also, go ahead and play TrackMania Nations Forever (http://store.steampowered.com/app/11020/) just because it's so good and that particular version is free.

Big Bang Mini. Second-best shmup available for the DS, behind SPAC3 INVADERS EXTR3ME (which has a sequel coming out in Japan at some point this year or next!). These guys also made Nervous Brickdown, one of the neatest treatments of the Breakout genre I've seen.

Retro Game Challenge. Old-school gaming for the new school. Sequel came out in Japan shortly before the US version of the first was released.

These last games are for European DS owners. Unfortunately, none of them are available in the US, and it's doubtful that at least one of them will ever reach us through normal channels.

Bomberman 2. Originally titled Custom Battler Bomberman (a much better name, in my opinion), this is the newest standard Bomberman game. Includes plenty of awesome multiplayer modes (including eight-player WFC, as usual) and an extensive single-player game with an RPGish equipment system and a cyberpunk backstory. (On an unrelated note, I realized months back that Pokémon is probably the closest to a cyberpunk game Nintendo is going to get.)

Freshly-Picked: Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland. Everybody probably has heard of this already, but for those who haven't, it's a game focusing on Tingle, the guy from Zelda who thinks he's a fairy. This game explains why.

Honeycomb Beat. Neat puzzle game that has a lot to do with hexagons and nothing to do with musical timing. Should be a bargain-bin title by now, since it came out a few years ago.

Colour Cross. Picross with colors. Maybe rent it, but certainly not worth a purchase. I don't really know why I'm including it here.

Lots more I don't want to mention right now.

I agree with you on this one, I have Super Turrican 1 & 2.  It may be a metroid clone, but it certainly holds its own in originality with all the different gun styles and cool weapons.  I liked 1 better than 2, but they were both great games.  Beautiful music in both of them too!  The grappling arm was pretty cool in 2.

I'd also like to say a few of mine:

Gumshoe for NES...an interesting concept.  I found it at the pawn shop for 3 bucks, and it uses the zapper.  Basically the guy's walking and you gotta shoot him and he jumps and you can continue shooting him to get him higher to avoid obstacles coming your way.  Challenging, but very innovative.

Star Tropics for NES...one of the best RPG-Zelda style games I've ever played, with a cool story and wicked gameplay.

I know somebody already mentioned Little Nemo.  That one was good, and also Maniac Mansion for NES and PC...both were grand.  I don't know how obscure NES Open Golf is, but I loved that game...probably the best golf game I've played on any system.

I might have said this already, but Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures is pretty neat. It's a bit like a side-scrolling point-and-click adventure, with the twist that you don't control the main character -- you just throw rocks at him. Fun plot, too.

This might be cutting it close, but I'd have to say Parappa the Rapper mostly because it's a cult classic. With the craziness of the characters (oh you know, talking dogs, flowers, a tin man looking thing, a full-bodied onion, and a lamb), the weird premise, and a pioneer of the rhythm genre, I think it's definitely an overlooked game for how well it took the rhythm genre head on.

The game is awesome just in its good soundtrack and how the gameplay and music changes depending on how good or bad you're doing which is the exact kind of game I love. I haven't found any other rhythm games that have really matched Parappa's "variable soundtrack," as I've come to call it, except for UmJammer Lammy and Parappa the Rappa 2.

I hear rumors of Parappa 3. That'd be awesome. Hmm, after naming UmJammer Lammy, maybe that should've been the underrated game I needed to mention.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for PS2.  Its stealth element sucks, and there is a lot of stuff in the game that was never in the book, but the graphics are decent and the gameplay is quite good.

I don't know if it's underated but Fire Emblem Geneology of the Holy War is a great game. It's considered the best Fire Emblem game but that series may be under-rated.

I was going to post something about how I've been playing a bunch of big-name games that no one else here would even dream of playing for one reason or another, but then I saw that the full thread title was about games you've never heard of, not games you've never played (hey, it's been a while since I looked at this thread), and I changed my mind. Having said that...

Silpheed: The Lost Planet is quite good. Cheap, too - I got my copy at GameStop for $4, making it the cheapest Treasure game they sell there.

Just started playing at your suggestion.  Very good so far, although I think it's impossible to find a fully translated version...

Anyway, I just played through Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for GBC and was surprised at how fun it was.  Basically just an adventure - RPG that sticks fairly close to the movie while adding specific elements that move the game along (such as collecting Famous Witch/Wizard Cards and using them in battle).
I used to love playing Battletanx (N64) with my friends and family when I was younger, but I'm really not sure if it's underrated or not.  It's a shooter where players control different tanks and blow stuff up.  The multiplayer was really entertaining.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for PS2.
Same here, but I think I lost it/it is unreadable by my PS2.

Also, anyone else think the original Star Fox (SNES) is totally underrated simply because of Star Fox 64 after it?  I mean, even the Wikipedia article states that the series "officially begins" with SF64, but I still enjoy the SNES game immensely and I think it probably deserves more recognition.

The original Star Fox is better in my brain just because I've played a lot more of it.

I've been playing a bunch of big-name games that no one else here would even dream of playing for one reason or another

What, are we talking Hannah Montana games or something?
Title: Re: The Best Video Games You've Never Heard Of

No, I'm talking about games like Spore and Red Alert 3, games that are good but aren't something you guys would care to play (strangely enough, these games are also from EA, though that shouldn't have anything to do with anything).
Hannah Montana is not "big-name" by any stretch of the imagination.

Game a lot of you probably haven't heard of: King's Bounty: The Legend, which is also rather good.

I would like to go on the record that I would dream of playing Spore and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.

Spore is just soooo compleeeex I can't ever possibly understand it.

They're talking about the fact that they rebooted the storyline when SF64 came out.

After one game, is there really much of a storyline to reboot?
Title: Re: The Best Video Games You've Never Heard Of

Yes. It was actually a pretty in-depth Star Wars ripoff. You have the plot of the game and the Nintendo Power comic (yes it was canon, even in Japan) to consider, as well as the entirely finished Star Fox 2 which never got released. Star Fox 64 makes it clear that none of the stuff that went down in the SNES era ever happened.

Glad you asked. No.

And yet they refuse to let anything that happens in the Mario games be "just 'cause" (i.e. just admitting that the whole SML/Sarasaland affair was a weird misstep and not keep bringing back Daisy).

This isn't a game, per se, but rather its soundtrack: The Quake 3: Arena soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem and Front Line Assembly. Some of the best rock/electronic/industrial I've heard from a non-commercially-released soundtrack.

Thats my thoughts.  I love it.  But its not on the virtual console for other people to enjoy it thogh.

edit: geez, a wii game called ExiteBots: trick racing is good, but i dont know any one else who has it.

Though it was only released 3 or 4 months ago, its still amazingly unpopular.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the Super Nintendo is a very underrated game. I remember playing it as a kid and not being able to beat it. Around 6 years later, I finally put it in again and beat it.

In that case I vouch for a possible Star Fox movie to be based on the SNES era continuity.

Centipede '98 PC, PSX, DreamCast.

Cover:(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2Fb%2Fb2%2FCentipede_1998_Cover.jpg&hash=a06d395f27874111e461ef864aff8c27)

DreamCast covers a little different.

Its great, but tis really ****in' hard. You get one hit and you lose a life [unless you collect some ladybug shells]

The really hard part is the bosses. i spent a week on the first boss [an ant] and now i got to the second today [a mantis] and its harder!

Except that Contra is difficult, whereas at least the PSX version of Centipede was way easy. Unfortunately, my copy of the game no longer works...

The console Dokapon games and the DS game are like Mario Party except that they're RPGs instead of minigame collections. Cool stuff.

Another good game is the free PC title Ocular Ink (http://pistachioproductions.com/dart/).

I was playing Gurumin the other day and realized that You'd Never Heard Of it. Really quite a fun action RPG/platformer that Falcom made on PC and later ported to PSP.

I totally heard of Gurumin before this thread. From you, granted, but still.

BLUE WISH RESURRECTION PLUS (http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/winnt/game/se448188.html) is an awesome free shoot-'em-up that came out last year. It's got a very forgiving (optional) auto-guard system, which is good if you're not used to manic shooters. Also low system requirements - my netbook runs it at ~60 FPS.

EDIT: Replay file (http://www.mediafire.com/?mhyahjmnn5l) of me playing through to level 5, accidentally demonstrating what I mean by "very forgiving" along the way.

EDIT AGAIN: Here's (http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/x_xgameroom/) the guy's site, where he has a few other games (all free).

Stalin vs. Martians was a horrible game but had a great trailer.

Why aren't you people playing BWR+ yet?

Droplitz (http://store.steampowered.com/app/23120/) is a fun puzzle game that's only $2 until August 28th.

A long time ago when I got this game and found how awesome it was, I refused to tell anyone about because I knew Warp would pirate it. I don't care anymore so I will tell:

Looney Tunes Cartoon Conductor is a great rhythm game for DS. It's pretty much* a straight rip of Ouendan, but it's a competent rip and thus a good game. The music is all classical, some of which is matched up with the Looney Tunes ep the song actually appeared in (kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit).

* There is one addition in the form of lines between circles that you have to trace along at the proper speed.

Speaking of games that are pretty much straight but competent rips of great games, Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony (http://aja-games.com/products_koumajo/index.htm) is Castlevania but with Touhou characters. The team is putting out an English patch, which is a big deal for a doujin game.

(Also, Lizard Dude, I almost certainly wouldn't have pirated this even if you had mentioned it earlier. I didn't pirate the last real-world-music-based rhythm game you suggested either, because my sister already had a copy of the GBA version of Britney's Dance Beat.)
