Title: Japanese version of Mario Kart 64 signs
Post by: violet_yoshi on May 24, 2005, 05:18:32 AM
I was thinking, while you're probaly right that Nintendo changed the Japanese parody sites of American companies so they wouldn't get sued.

They also might've changed the Marioro sign, because in effect it would be kind of like advertising ciggerettes to minors. I mean, like with Joe Camel. If kids associated Mario with smoking, well that'd just be wrong.

If I hadn't been told that was a parody of "Marlboro," I wouldn't have noticed it. But I do agree that they could have made a parody of something less vile...

That reminds me, JJ wrote a good article about Nintendo Censorship.

Strange, I read that article before and didn't know a TMK staff member wrote it.

Interesting Fact: The Mario and Yoshi RC microsizers.  Look up the official website for them.  The japanese ads can be seen in the background.

I didn't realize that was JJ's work, either.  Good job; that was an interesting article on what otherwise might have been a stale subject.

... apparently the author of Power Up feels the same way; JJ's site gets a mention on pg 221.

It's hard to see in that screenshot, but what is Bowser doing there that required censorship? It looks like he's just holding up his arms.

He's giving us the "hand to bicep" bird.

Time slowed and Reality bent.
But on and on the Eggman went.

It's the equivalent of the middle finger in some countries, if I recall correctly.

But I could be wrong...
