Mario Chat / Mario Timeline
« on: January 20, 2013, 04:43:01 PM »
So, I've been trying to piece together a timeline for the Mario universe. At this point I've only included games that are somehow referenced in other games in a way that indicates some sort of sequence of events. Many of these games have a general order in the timeline, but not a specific one (e.g. after Yoshi's Island, after Luigi's Mansion, etc.).

I have arranged the games in the most logical sequence of events. Typically they are in chronological order of release date. There may be some flexibility, however, and if so, I have indicated it.

Under each game, I mention the year (and possibly month) of the earliest release date, list what games it references and provide examples, list what games reference said game, and provide other notable information.

There appears to be a "main" timeline, which contains games that are intrinsically connected to other games in the series. However, some games are less interconnected, and may in fact indicate a "branching" timeline. If so, it means a game has ties to a past game(s) in the timeline, but is either never clearly referenced in a future game that its events transpired, or the future game only has ties to the previous game (and possibly the same games it referenced). This does not mean that these games do branch from the main timeline, just that it's a possibility. If a game might "branch," I indicate so in its entry.

This timeline is by no means complete. I tried to include as many pertinent references as possible (that allude to a sequence of events), but I'm sure I missed some. If anyone knows of any I'm missing, I'd love to add them. Also, aside from Sticker Star, I have not played any Mario games released beyond Super Mario Galaxy 2. So I'm missing any information from games after that. There are also several older games I haven't played, including most of the puzzle games, a few games in the Yoshi series, Yoshi's Safari, and Super Princess Peach.

NOTE: I have not included the spin-off games and any of their references unless the spin-off game was explicitly referenced in a "main" game. Currently the only spin-off games included are Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64.

While some spoilers may be unavoidable, I did the best I could to add spoiler tags where I thought might be necessary.

Synopsis of the Timeline Sequence:
Yoshi's Island      [1995]
Yoshi's Island DS   [2006]
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Past)   [2005]
Yoshi's Story   [1997]
Mario Bros.   [1983]
Super Mario Bros.   [1985]
Super Mario Bros. 2   [1986 or 1988]
Super Mario Bros. 3   [1988]
Super Mario World   [1990]
Super Mario Kart   [8/1992]
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars   [3/1996]
Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS   [6/1996; 11/2004]
Mario Kart 64      [12/1996]
Paper Mario   [2000]
Luigi's Mansion   [2001]
Super Mario Sunshine   [2002]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga   [2003]
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door   [7/2004]
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Present)   [2005]
New Super Mario Bros.   [2006]
Super Paper Mario   [4/2007]
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story   [2/2009]
New Super Mario Bros. Wii   [2008]
Super Mario Galaxy   [11/2007]

Other games:
Super Mario Land   [1989]
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins   [10/1992]
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3   [1994]

Donkey Kong's history is so convoluted, what with his identity being inconsistent, that I'm not even going to attempt to include his games—even the Mario games involving him—in the timeline. However, none of these games have real ties in-'verse to the rest of the series, not to mention there's no clear place they occur on the "main" Mario timeline. The Mario games with DK don't even have a clear order, themselves. The Mario vs. Donkey Kong series probably occurs in chronological order, and all occur after the original Donkey Kong game. The Donkey Kong Country series plus Donkey Kong 64 also occur in chronological order and after Donkey Kong. (I'm not gonna provide references.) But beyond that, there are no real references that indicate an order. Unless I'm mistaken. So yeah. If someone else wants to tackle that beast (pun intended), go for it.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with the Wario series, so I didn't include that in the timeline, either. For the most part, the only real ties it has is through the Super Mario Land series, which doesn't fit anywhere in the Mario timeline, either. So if someone else wants to cover the Wario series, go for it.

And now for the main attraction! (Starting in the post below.)

Not at the Dinner Table / Sexual Orientation
« on: October 21, 2012, 02:37:55 PM »
While I know this is a risky and controversial topic, I'm surprised this poll hasn't been done before. I do realize not everyone fits "neatly" into one category, and one's orientation and/or identification may change over time. If you're unfamiliar with any of the terms in the poll, Google is your friend.

Feel free to discuss anything related to sexual and/or romantic orientation here. Just keep it respectful, tactful, and kind.  Also, save the marriage/gay debate for the preexisting topic.

I personally identify as hetero-romantic ace. Depending on how you look at it, I guess that makes me both "straight" and "nothing" at the same time.

General Chat / Personality Survey
« on: October 03, 2006, 05:42:30 PM »
Many of you already know I'm very interested in psychology--so much, in fact, it's my major.
Learning about myself and how my mind works is fascinating (not to mention very useful and helpful), and I also find learning about others' minds, especially personality, to be interesting.

So, I'd like to study and compare the personalities of all you guys (both for fun, and for actual research). So.... take these tests, or any other interesting ones regarding personality and post your results here!

The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) assessment I find most interesting. A particularly interesting test for this is the Preference Exploration test. An in-depth explanation of each type can be found here, if you want to learn more about yours (or others').

Another really cool (and dynamic) test is the Global Advanced Personality Test.

Don't forget the classic Personality Disorder Test! (Also found here, which has been linked on the forums before.)

Have fun with this! It's interesting to see how you are and compare!

Here's my results:

MBTI/Jung type: INTJ
I both prefer to be and am attracted to the ENFJ type.
I'm more introverted but have well-balanced extraversion, and I'm more thinking but have a well-balanced feeling side.

Stability results were moderately low which suggests you are worrying, insecure, emotional, and anxious.

Orderliness results were moderately high which suggests you are, at times, overly organized, reliable, neat, and hard working at the expense of flexibility, efficiency, spontaneity, and fun.

Extraversion results were medium which suggests you are moderately talkative, outgoing, sociable and interacting.

trait snapshot:
neat freak, organized, worrying, phobic, fears the unknown, irritable, pessimistic, emotionally sensitive, fears chaos, risk averse, fragile, unadventurous, depressed, frequently second guesses self, likes to fit in, does not like to stand out, perfectionist, hard working, does not like to be alone, clingy, dependent, practical, ordinary, cautious, takes precautions, good at saving money, suspicious, heart over mind, busy, altruistic.

Fairly accurate. I might post more stuff later.

Edit: In the future, if I gather enough data and do enough research, I might be able to complete -- and post -- a Mario Personality Test.

I predict that the majority of the people here are "IN"-types (Introverted Intuition).

AbercrombieBaseball is the most comparatively extreme, his mostly high extremes.
Goodie is a close second, his mostly low extremes.

Toad is comparatively the most balanced, with only one extreme (which is tied with someone else’s).
Sunbun is the second most balanced, with two extremes (all tied with others’).

Which hand is dominant for you? Do you tend to use one hand for certain things, but the other hand for other things? How about your dominant eye or foot or other part of your body--as in, do you tend to use one side over the other?

As for me, I'm left-handed, but I use my right hand for many things that some lefties tend to still use their left. I would say my left hand is more coordinated, but my right hand is stronger.

I use my left hand for writing, drawing, cutting, washing, brushing my teeth, throwing, using untinsels, and most other things that require coordination or skill.
However, I use my right hand for using a mouse; I cannot use a mouse well with my left hand. I've noticed I mark my place with my right hand (rather than left) when reading--you know, dragging your finger down with the line of text one's on? I also tend to use my right hand when I'm multi-tasking, such as using a calculator while writing, drinking while eating or writing, shaving while washing, etc.

Some things I have to do the same way as a right-handed person would, and if I try doing it differently (i.e. using a "left-handed" version, if there even is one), I'm horrible with it--like playing video games, using a camera, playing an instrument, using a mouse, turning pages, etc. (Yeah, most of those things are done with two hands, anyway.)

Other things I do ambidexrously; I use whichever hand is free or closer, whichever is more convenient. Eating, drinking, using a remote/calculator/CD player/other device that involves pushing buttons without "skill", and turning on switches are some examples. Sometimes I do things where I switch hands I use to make the task easier, like painting my nails, brushing/blow drying my hair, or putting on mascara (haha, all girly tasks XD).

Other tendencies:
  • I hold the phone with my left hand to my left ear
  • When using one eye to look at things, I use my left one
  • I hold things in my right hand or my left arm, but usually not the other way around
  • I usually carry my purse on my right shoulder, but sometimes I switch
  • I can raise my left brow while lowering my right one, but not the other way around
  • My right hand is better at cracking its knuckles than my left (when I don't use the help of the other hand)
  • I kick with my left foot
  • I wink with either eye ;)

I like the way game controllers are designed: directional control with the left hand (free-coordination?), pushing buttons with the right (more strength, controlled-coordination?).

Make your own pictures of anything LEET, Engrish, TMK inside jokes, or anything similar. Please don't just search online for already-existing things and post them (like the O RLY owls, for example); get clever and creative! Have fun! :D

Props to Vid for the original idea of an "O RLY/ YA RLY" topic, which inspired this one.

General Chat / Decoratin' the Tree
« on: December 10, 2005, 01:08:27 PM »
For those of you who celebrate Christmas, and assuming you get/have a tree, how do you decorate your Christmas tree? Anything else interesting about your tree? How do you decorate anything else in or outside your house? Pictures could be cool, as well, if you guys want.

As for me, we have a traditional/standard-looking plastic tree--about the height of the room.
As for decorations....
-Variety-colored tiny lights. They can flicker if set to be that way.
-Red ribbon tied into bows (do NOT go there, LD! I didn't say gift bows!)
-Candy canes
-Tons of ornaments of all different, unique kinds
-Red beaded garland
-Precious Moments angel at the top

At the base of the tree is a circular red cloth (could be blue now; my mom may have made a new one, but I can't remember, and we're not done decorating, so...). We used to have three "Christmas bears" underneath the tree, but now we have a ceramic/glass nativity which family friends of ours gave us.

We have all kinds of other decorations around the house, which would take forever to tell about, so, um...yeah.
Outside, we used to have plain white bulbs hanging from the roof (boring, but better than nothing), but ever since we've moved, we haven't done that. ;_; We have a wreath on the outside of the front door, and a bow with jingly bells hanging on the inside doorknob. Lately we've hung wreaths outside all the front windows. In the front lawn, we have a simple plastic lit nativity of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus lying in a manger. We used to put white mini-lights around the bushes.

I think that's all for me. I might post a picture(s) later, once we have stuff done.

General Chat / Hotness? X_x
« on: November 16, 2005, 06:44:22 PM »
I've never understood what it is that defines a person as "HAWT" as opposed to "nice looking" or "attractive," etc.; when someone says a person is the former, it always makes me go "..." (regardless of the commenting person’s or target's gender).

Anyway, after "observing" you guys for the past two and a half years, with comments to or about me (joking, serious, whatever), and observing other "real life" people, I'm curious as to what you guys really think of how I look. With the poll option, now it can be completely anonymous. Please be honest.
I hope this doesn't make me seem vain or anything; I'm really not. I'm just....intrigued and curious about it. Any girls can answer this too, if they want. *Shrugs*

I like to think of this as a psychological study/obsevation. I'm obsessed with psychology... >_>;
(Note: I don't think I'm hot, and I'll never understand people that think I am, if they even do. X_x)

As for this whole idea...Yeah, I'm weird, I know.
This is probably a mistake, I know it...  Probably the less people actually post, the better... >_>;

Edit: IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I LOOK LIKE, DO NOT POST TELLING THAT YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I LOOK LIKE! There is a link on one of the pages. At least take the time to browse through the topic before posting. Yeesh.

Ummm...could you please use punctuation? It seemed like one long run-on sentence, while it should be multiple paragraphs. It was too fast for my tired eyes to handle.

General Chat / Ultimate Birthday Compilation
« on: May 03, 2005, 10:26:38 PM »
I know there have been birthday threads and posts in which a person has stated their birthday. I've been thinking about this for quite a while now, and I thought it'd be cool to create a topic in which there'd be an easy calendar-like reference in which people could easily access and state when their birthdays are. I have compiled a list of as many TMKers' birthdays I knew and/or could find, so I think it's a good start.

The purpose is to have as many TMKers' (namely people from the forums) birthdays known and added as possible to the list. I intend to edit names in as more people state their birthdays.

While compiling this, I have removed all people who have been banned or have left indefinitely; basically, I'm starting over from scratch with the current people here.

I have also included the last 2 digits of the year each person was born in in parentheses beside each person's name. *PLEASE TELL ME THE YEAR YOU WERE BORN, AS WELL.*
For days with multiple people, I've put them in order from oldest to youngest. If one doesn't have a year, it's alphabetical.

Site Discussion / Important New Rules
« on: April 04, 2004, 03:09:48 PM »
(Posted - 18 March 2004 9:10 PST)
Beginning as of now is the "Strike System."

~If you break one of the rules, you get one warning first, then three "strikes"--or chances to get away with breaking the rules--without 'punishment'
~If broken three times, you are at the mercy of the admins' discretion, meaning you are subject to being banned.
~However, if you EDIT your OWN remarks after realizing you could get a "strike" for it, and it's BEFORE a mod/admin has to edit it, you'll be fine.
In other words, if a post has to be edited for lack of following a rule, STRIKE. Don't get caught. >:P

Every time a person's post is edited, I will discretely put at the bottom "Warning," "Strike 1," etc.

~ALSO!! Depending on the severity of the "crime" depends on how many strikes you get.
~The common ones, like swearing and spamming = 1, but something like posting porn, etc, is an automatic ban. (But you all knew that)

I apologize for having to be so strict; I really don't WANT to have to do this, but these boards have gotten out of hand. Don't trifle with me on this one.

---This is the OFFICIAL start now, as in the staff/mods will back me up now.  All warnings/strikes I've already given still count. I'll post the statistics here to keep track (for the mods/admins and myself, mostly.) Now that this is in its own thread, there's no "excuse" for "misbehavior."

Please, any mods/admins report "misbehavior" here, so I can keep track of everything.---

~NOTE: Editing your post AFTER a mod/admin has edited it (to cover the edit up) is an automatic strike, too.

Hey, everybody!  Well, this is a month of TMK milestones for me, so I felt like making this thread.  (I haven't made many, anyway. XD )

1) This is my 4000th post (obviously)
2) Today is my 9 month anniversary on the forums
3) I'm new TMK staff! w00t! ^_^
4) On Dec. 18th, I completed "The Prophecy" two years ago

...And, of course, also the irrelevant fact that it's New Year's Eve...

So join the party, everyone! My treat! ^_~

Due to the overwhelming praise and popularity I've gotten for "The Prophecy" (^_^), I'm seriously thinking about sending Part 1 of it in to the fanfic section of TMK.

Do you guys think I should? Your opinions are much appreciated. (PS--have any of you other story writers here thought about sending yours in?)

Forum Games / The New & Improved Mario Trivia Quiz-Off!!
« on: May 01, 2003, 09:07:24 AM »
Hey Everybody! Welcome to the...uh, (read title)!!  And this is your host, Saaaaaaaaaaapphiraaaaaaaaaaa!!! *Ahem* Sorry. :)

Anyhoo, in seeing that all the other quizzes have died off (mostly 'cuz of lack of host's quick response), I have devised the a new--AND improved--Trivia Quiz show!!

I will ask 15--count 'em--15 questions on anything from any Mario game. Note that these will not be the easiest of questions. Anyone may participate.

Whoever gets the most points will win a FABULOUS prize of their choice in Animal Crossing (assuming, of course, I can provide it.)

Now the rules are...
-The first person to answer correctly will get 1 point.
-Questions answered INCORRECTLY, however, will result in a DEDUCTION of 1 point.
-I will be keeping track of the scores and post them with each response back.
-If someone anwsers incorrectly, the same question is still on the floor until answered correctly.

At the end of the 15-question round, a NEW round will begin, and ANOTHER chance for a FABULOUS AC prize will be available!
Good luck everybody!

And now... The first question!!!
1) What is the name of the Toad standing near the hole where Princess Peach's Castle used to be? (Paper Mario)

Mario Chat / Mario Dreams
« on: April 27, 2003, 10:31:28 PM »
In another thread, the topic of wierd Mario-related dreams was mentioned. Anyone got any?

Here's one I had back in the SNES days.
I was playing SMB3 on Mario All-Stars. I had gotten up to world 7 (Pipe Maze/Land) but was stuck on 7-2--the deserty level with TONS of pipes and Piranha Plants, with a water area running under it.
I reached the part where there was a huge gap b/w two pipes, and a lone Koopa and two other pipes where in this gap. But every time I tried to jump out of it, note blocks appeared. I WAS STUCK!!! AHHH!
I was stewing that night about how I could get past it, but couldn't think of a solution. While asleep, I had a dream--I (as in Mario) went into the gap, filled it with the Note Blocks, and went down one of the pipes in the gap--into the water area below. I swam thru the water and exited thru another pipe further back. After coming back out, now back on dry land above, I made it back to that gap and walked with ease across the note block-filled bridge.

When I woke up, I tried what I'd dreamt, and, sure enough, it actually worked!!!

I posted earlier in the "Mario's children" thread that I wrote a fanfic. For now, I'll give the intro/summary (like what you'd read on the back of a book.) Give me your feedback, and if you guys like it, I'll start posting it in chapters (one per day). Note also that only 1/4th is revised and edited, so it'll be incomplete for now. BTW, this story and the character Melony are (c)by me. Here goes:

2 Kingdoms…  1 War…  1 Child…  1 Destiny…

It seemed like a perfect evening in the Mushroom Kingdom. However, Bowser kidnapped the Princess, once again. But this time it was different—much different. Something happened—something terrible—which changed everyone’s lives—especially Peach’s—forever, seemingly overnight. As the Mushroom World is turned upside-down, and the famous heroes struggle to survive, a new hero arises after many long, hard years pass. Struggling through her hardships, eventually she discovers the truth of her identity. The hope of the future lies within her hands as she seeks to fulfill her destiny, with the help of several familiar faces.

"Melony flipped the diary’s page. An old photograph fell out. Delicately she picked it up, her hands a little shaky. She looked at it carefully. It was of her mother—and another man. They were smiling lovingly, their eyes sparkling with joy and passion. Who was this other man? She carefully she turned the photograph over. A date was written on the back. It was almost 17 years ago! …Then she saw it… Her mother’s name and… Mario. …Who was this Mario…? Were they in love with each other…? If her mother loved this man… then why was her father someone else…?"
