Mario Chat / Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:21:38 PM »
Might as well give it a thread.

What's everyone's take on Dream Team? I'd put it on the same level as Bowser's Inside Story, above Partners in Time but below Superstar Saga. The Massif Bros. are quite possibly my favourite M&L characters to date.

Site Discussion / Animated avatars

Does the site no longer support animated avatars, or is my browser just being weird? My current avatar is a .gif, but it isn't moving like it should.

Gender politics from a different perspective. I can't think of much else to say, but... yeah.

Video Game Chat / Earthbound/Mother Port/Remake on the Horizon?

I only played an hour's worth of EarthBound on Snes9x, but this is bound (hurr) to excite some people.

General Chat / Changing One's IP Address

Like a one-man 21st-century A-Team, I've been banned from 4chan for a crime I didn't commit, and can't appeal the ban for three whole days. Am I just supposed to select "Use the following IP address" and fill in the fields with random numbers?

General Chat / You're Not Such a Nerd

This video eloquently expresses what many have been wanting to say for several years now. While I don't consider myself that much of a nerd, I'd say I'm nerdier than the typical normal[bundle of sticks] who doesn't play games outside of CoD and goes out on weekends. At any rate, it's required watching.

I cancelled my subscription soon after Future US took up its publishing, but this still marks the end of an important institution in Nintendo's history.

Video Game Chat / Mariokémon

Making this thread made me feel all 'spergy.

No doubt there's already a thread for this somewhere, but I couldn't find it. At any rate, this topic is for making Mario-series creatures into Pokemon. This post is far from being finished, but I'll add to it now and then. Feel free to debate about the ethics of captuing and battling with creatures who can speak English and function in a human-like society.

Yoshi - Dragon (inb4 BUT HE'S A DINOSAUR)
Moves: Tackle, Headbutt, Lick, Bug Bite, Stomp, Stockpile, Swallow, Spit Up, Barrage, Egg Bomb, Softboiled
Notes: Yoshi can gain a secondary type based on the colour of Shell he's given. Green = Normal, Red = Fire, Blue = Flying, and Yellow = Ground. Upon being given a Shell, Yoshi will try to learn a new attack corresponding to his new type: Skull Bash (or maybe some new invented move), Flamethrower, Sky Attack, or Earthquake. Much like changing Rotom's forme in the Pokemon games, removing or swapping the Shell will remove Yoshi's secondary type and corresponding attack.

Baby Yoshi - Dragon
Moves: Same as above for the most part
Notes: Hatched from eggs. Can initially only be found in green, but later in other colours which, once hatched and evolved, permanently remain that colour/type. For instance, a Red Egg will hatch into a Red Baby Yoshi, which evolves into a Fire/Dragon Yoshi.

Goomba - Normal
Moves: Tackle, Growl, Bite, Defense Curl, Headbutt, Crunch, Scary Face, Take Down, Rollout, Double-Edge
Abilities: Intimidate, Rough Skin (in reference to Mario physics)
Notes: The Ratatta/Sentret/Zigzagoon/Bidoof/Patrat of the bunch. Evolves into the Normal-Flying/type Paragoomba.

Koopa Troopa - Normal
Moves: Tackle, Withdraw, Peck, Protect, Shell Smash, Razor Shell
Notes: Evolves into Paratroopa at a certain level. Comes in green, red, blue and yellow varities, but are all statistically identical. Can sometimes be holding an item called a Shell, which changes Yoshi's type when held based on its colour.

Paratroopa - Normal/Flying
Moves: Sky Drop, Brave Bird, Bounce

Magikoopa - Normal(?)/Psychic
Moves: Teleport, Hex, Curse, Disable, Psywave, Hypnosis, Mystical Fire, Tri-Attack, Magic Room, Trick Room

Dry Bones - Normal/Ghost
Moves: Bonemerang, Bone Rush, Bone Club, Curse,
Abilities: Sturdy

Boo - Ghost
Moves: Lick, Astonish, Curse, Pursuit, Night Shade, Shadow Sneak, Scary Face, Hypnosis, Mean Look, Protect, Shadow Ball, Phantom Force
Abilities: Levitate, maybe some new ability that grants immunity to sight-based moves like Leer and Glare

Lakitu - Normal/Flying
Notes: Appear in hordes of Spinies

Spiny - Normal
Moves: Spiky Shield
Abilities: Iron Barbs

Hammer Bro - Fighting
Notes: I can't be arsed to make separate entries for Fire Bros, Boomerang Bros, Ice Bros, Sledge Bros, Sumo Bros, Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bros, etc.

Buzzy Beetle - Bug(?)/Steel
Abilities: "Fireproof" - Complete immunity to Fire damage
Notes: I know they aren't actually beetles, but I needed more Bug-types.

Parabuzzy - Bug/Flying
Abilities: Same as above

Pianha Plant - Grass
Notes: Might evolve into a Grass/Fire Venus Fire Trap.

Bullet Bill - Steel
Moves: Bullet Punch, Lock-On, Magnet Bomb, Selfdestruct

Cheep-Cheep - Water
Moves: Splash, Tackle, Flail, Water Gun, Bounce
Abilities: Swift Swim
Notes: Evolves into Boss Bass or Big Bertha, depending on gender

Blooper - Water
Moves: Constrict, Water Gun, Wrap, Soak, Sludge Bomb, Smokescreen, Octazooka, Gunk Shot, Hydro Pump
Abilities: Levitate

Jelectro - Water/Electric
Moves: Thundershock, Electrify, Nuzzle, Water Gun, Charge, Discharge,
Abilities: Static

Shy Guy - Dark/Fairy
Moves: Covet, Play Nice, Knock Off, Charm, Foul Play, Teeter Dance, Play Rough
Abilities: Run Away

Monty Mole - Ground
Moves: Scratch, Sand-Attack, Dig
Notes: Evolves into Mega Mole.

Wiggler - Bug
Moves: Tackle, Struggle Bug, Rage, Infestation, Thrash, Petal Blizzard, Earthquake
Abilities: Anger Issues - Raises Attack each time it's hit by a physical move

Podoboo - Fire/Ghost(?)
Moves: Ember, Astonish, Will-o-Wisp, Lava Plume, Spite,
Abilities: Flame Body, Flash Fire
Notes: It's hard to say whether they're living entities, or just blobs of lava which happen to have eyes like almost everything else in the Mario universe. If you consider them analogous to PM's Lava Bubbles, they're more likely the former.

Lil' Sparky - Electric
Moves: Thundershock, Ember, Flash, Will-o-Wisp, Thunder Wave, Spark, Charge, Discharge, Electric Terrain, Zap Cannon
Abilities: Static
Notes: Evolves into Hothead (Electric/Fire)

Thwomp - Rock
Moves: Stomp, Smack Down, Stone Edge, Meteor Mash, Earthquake
Abilities: Levitate
Notes: Can be bred for Thwimps.

Pokey - Grass
Moves: Poison Sting, Needle Arm, Ingrain,
Abilities: Poison Point, Iron Barbs

Chain Chomp - Steel
Moves: Bite, Growl, Howl, Crunch, Roar, Iron Head, Gyro Ball, Fire/Thunder/Ice Fang, Head Smash
Abilities: Intimidate, Rock Head

Bob-Omb - Fire/Steel
Moves: Bide, Selfdestruct, Explosion, Destiny Bond
Abilities: Aftermath

Blargg - Fire/Dragon (Or pure Fire, if you're picturing its post-Yoshi's Island incarnation)

Tweester - Flying
Moves: Gust, Twister, Whirlwind, Razor Wind, Rock Throw, Ominous Wind, Silver Wind, Tailwind, Icy Wind, Hurricane
Abilities: Vortex - 30% chance of causing confusion on contact

Moves: Mach Punch, Shadow Punch, Shadow Sneak, Block, Close Combat

Ninji - Dark
Abilities: Prankster

Snifit - Dark/Steel
Moves: Odor Sleuth, Bullet Seed, Rock Blast

Fishbone - Water/Ghost
Moves: Astonish, Bone Rush, Aqua Tail,

Bumpty - Ice

Bandit - Dark
Moves: Thief, Covet, Trick, Snatch, Fling, Pay Day, Naty Plot, Parting Shot,
Abilities: Pickup, Pickpocket

Mario Chat / Points
« on: May 02, 2012, 01:56:37 AM »
Given that points are well, pointless, why do you suppose Nintendo has continued to include a score system in Mario platformers? Having one in SMB was understandable, since most games of the time had no goal except for beating the high score. But now that scores serve no purpose besides being relics of arcade gaming, why do you think points are still awarded to players for squashing Goombas and the like?
