Oh.
Oh no.

But actually this news seems pretty rad. Hopefully it turns out to be a good idea. Maybe there will finally, finally be a good video game movie.

Video Game Chat / Metroid Charity Marathon
« on: March 28, 2016, 10:24:04 PM »
This Friday (April 1st) and continuing into the weekend, I'm holding a marathon of (almost) the whole Metroid series. I'll have a few friends over, and we'll be streaming the whole thing. The goal is to raise money for Extra Life (a charity that funds children's hospitals) and also have fun and make ourselves very tired. I've got a website up with some basic information about it at http://metroidmarathon.com, and we'll be streaming the whole thing at https://www.twitch.tv/metroid_marathon/. If that sounds like a thing that you'd be interested in, then I hope you'll stop by during the weekend! It should be a fun time.

Video Game Chat / Undertale.
« on: September 24, 2015, 10:33:23 PM »
Undertale is a recent indie game by a guy called Toby Fox, previously a contributor to Homestuck by way of music. (Full disclosure: I thought Homestuck was a webcomic, and didn't know it somehow had music, but that is a different topic altogether.) It's a puzzle- and dialogue-heavy RPG with turn-based battles, in which you dodge enemy attacks by playing a tiny little Touhou, and can also talk your way out of any battle. The dialogue and presentation are very clearly Mother-inspired, and it's funny throughout.

It's on the page that I linked, but here's the trailer for the game again:
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hojv0m3TqA" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hojv0m3TqA</a>

There's a demo available on the website that consists of the first dungeon and boss. It takes about a half-hour to play through, so you can easily see if the game is to your liking. I haven't finished the game proper myself, but reports are that it's about six hours long, and also has several different endings, making replays a non-tedious thing to do.

I recommend you check it out!

Video Game Chat / You're a squid now (you're a kid now)
« on: May 29, 2015, 10:29:21 PM »
It's Splatoon day! How are your squid battles going?

I decided a while back that I wouldn't get this one on launch day because I had used all my hype up on Mario Kart and Smash. A friend of mine got it, though, and I've spent the last few hours at his house passing the controller back and forth between online matches. We played some single-player as well, which was fun but in a completely different manner. Now I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow and spend a while streaming it probably. A very good time!

I'm a kid now I'm a squid now.

Video Game Chat / Rhythm Heaven Fever
« on: August 16, 2014, 10:31:15 PM »
WarioWare is a great series, right? Of course it is. And rhythm games are cool too, right? You bet they are. Rhythm Heaven Fever is both of those things, and it's amazing.

You play as a wrestler being interviewed after a match.

Or a monkey on a watch hand.

Or an up-and-coming rapper.

You play a collection of one to two-minute minigames, in which you press the A button (and sometimes B) to the rhythm of the music. After you complete a set of four minigames, you unlock a themed "Remix" stage, which is a longer track that incorporates all four minigames in the set, which switch off in five to ten-second increments.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rvyix0aMc0" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rvyix0aMc0</a>

It's silly, and it's hectic, and it's catchy, and all of the characters have so much character, despite being mostly mute. It's definitely the most fun I've had with a rhythm game, and maybe one of the most fun games in general that I've played. Plus, it's a few years old and it sold awfully poorly, so you can pick it up for cheap. I got it used for $9.

Go play it!

Forum Games / The power of encryption!
« on: August 15, 2013, 12:23:53 AM »
The internet is a wacky, dangerous place. To keep your sensitive messages away from prying eyes, several encryption schemes have been developed. One well-known method of encryption is the public/private-key method. In this system, the sender and recipient of a message both have a public (available to anyone) and a private (kept secret, for the owner's use only) key. To send a secret message using this system, the sender encrypts the message with the recipient's public key, and the recipient decrypts the message with his own private key. This way, only the designated recipient can read the message.

One implementation of the public/private-key scheme is PGP, which stands for "Pretty Good Protection." A program to generate and store PGP keys, as well as encrypt messages, can be found at http://gpg4win.org. This program (actually a suite of programs) runs on Windows. (If you're using Linux or Mac, I'm not 100% sure what you can use, but I probably can find out if need be.)

Since a program which allows you to easily encrypt messages is so easily available, let's have a secret-message party! Get yourself a key, and send some messages to people! You'll need their public keys, of course. The fun will be in figuring out who a message is for, and whether or not they're willing to share it once it's decrypted.

My public key is as follows:

Fan Creations / I'm a music-dude, too, sometimes.
« on: October 21, 2012, 07:56:23 PM »
Sometimes, I make music. When I do, I often don't finish it. Here's where I put things to show people: http://soundcloud.com/briguy92/

And here's a thing I finished just today: http://soundcloud.com/briguy92/so-awesome-final-i-think

I started working on it in August of 2011. I slowly added to it and tweaked it and fixed it until it was awesome. At least, I think it's awesome. I've heard it so many times by this point that I can't even tell if it's awesome or terrible (or anywhere in between) anymore.

General Chat / Just in time for valentines day, too
« on: February 04, 2012, 01:06:04 PM »
Yesterday, my girlfriend decided that she would like to, as they say, "take some time off from our relationship", in order to sort of re-prioritize herself and make sure that the relationship isn't getting in the way of more important things. I understand that, and I respect it. In fact, I think it's actually a really good idea; we're both college students, we both have more important things to concern ourselves with. Agreeing with and respecting that decision doesn't make it not suck, though. Having a girlfriend is awesome. Not having one, which is pretty much where I'm at right now, isn't so awesome. What makes it worse is the fact that we go to schools in very different locations, so what was previously a long-distance relationship is now a long-distance un-relationship, which is both hard to wrap my mind around, and hard to get over. I know that this situation is just temporary, and I fully trust that she'll come back to me, but there's still a question of when. In the meantime, it's gonna be rough for me.

And now, I'm posting on the internet about it. Is that a good or a bad thing? I'm not entirely sure. I guess you all can be the judge of that. I just need a hug.

Video Game Chat / Sonic Adventure
« on: June 25, 2011, 11:14:36 PM »
So as part of some kind of marketing thing involving Sonic Generations and Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary, Sonic Adventure is on sale on Xbox Live Arcade for $5. I've never played this game before, but I've heard a lot of people say a lot of very nice things about it. I'm kinda considering buying it, but I'm not sure if I should. Like I said, I've never played it, but I have played a bit of Sonic Adventure 2, which I found to be kind of... eh. The Sonic/Shadow stages were fun, the Knuckles/Rouge stages were boring, and the Tails/Eggman levels were more boring. Are the two games similar at all?

Video Game Chat / What's good on Wii Shop?
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:51:39 AM »
So I've got 1400 Wii points (wait, they're called Nintendo points now, aren't they) sitting on my account at the moment, and nothing I've seen in my brief skimmings of the shop has really struck my interest. Is there anything on there that you'd recommend?
For reference, these are the games I currently have from the shop:
The Legend of Zelda
Kirby's Adventure
Ocarina of Time
Super Metroid
Super Mario RPG
World of Goo
F-Zero X
Pokemon Puzzle League
Bit.Trip Beat

Fan Creations / Programming project - need suggestions
« on: May 23, 2011, 06:51:56 PM »
I decided that I want to give myself a coding project over the summer, something to do with my brain while school's not in session. Problem is, I have no ideas. I want to make a program that could be considered useful to... I don't know, at least five people or something. I'm currently leaning toward making some kind of smartphone app, probably for Android because iPhone costs a million dollars plus your left pinky to publish apps for, and Windows Phone sucks, and also costs a lot to publish apps for.

To get to the point, what are some applications you would like to see and would find useful, whether on your computer or your intelligent telephone device?

Not at the Dinner Table / Confess!: (became a) Religious Discussion
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:26:12 AM »
I almost don't want to post this because... honestly I don't know why. For some reason I feel nervous about telling people things about myself like this, even if those people are near-complete strangers and the things I'm saying can't really come back to hurt me in any way. Or at least not any way I can think of. Anyway.

There have been a lot of times lately when I've done something I know I shouldn't, gotten angry at myself for it, decided to do something about it, not done anything about it, rinse and repeat ad infinitum. Mostly this has to do with school. There have been a couple classes that I've not worked at hard in as I should, and I know it, but I continue to slack off. And my grades show it, I failed English at the end of 12th grade, failed a programming class last semester (and I'm majoring in computer science, go figure), got a D in calculus, and I'm on my way to failing calculus 2 this semester. I kinda hate myself for doing this same thing over and over. I don't really have any excuse for it.

I have a hard time showing anything creative that I've done to other people. I think it's out of fear that whoever I show it to won't appreciate it, but whenever I think that I ask myself "Seriously? Is that any reason to keep all this to yourself?" Because of that, there are a bunch of things that I've wanted to do for the longest time but have been too nervous to do. Things like playing music or drawing or writing. Basically anything that I could point to and say "I did that." There's not much I want to do more right now than learn how to play an instrument or how to draw, but I won't let myself because I don't want to have to show other people that I've done anything. I love when I show something to someone and they like it, or even if they don't like it but can tell me how to fix it. I just don't like actually showing things to people. I used to take piano lessons in third grade, and I loved playing the piano, but I absolutely hated recitals. Having someone ask me to play something for them, in the way family members do, was even worse. I'm still that way and I don't know why and that bothers me.

I'm a Christian, but I don't like identifying as such. Being Christian isn't the most popular of ideas. I've never been directly ridiculed for it, but I'm always afraid that I will. The most common belief, at least among non-religious people, seems to be that religion is only for "the weak", people who can't decide for themselves what to do with their lives, etc. I hate the idea of being labeled like that. My closest friends, and even some of my family doesn't know that I'm a Christian. Religion is supposed to be one of those things that you're not ashamed of, right? So why the hell can't I get myself to stop being ashamed of it?

So yeah, that's my stuff. For some reason I'm thinking these problems are pretty common. If they're even problems at all. I don't know. I'm kinda depressed now.

tl;dr: I have insecurity issues, but I doubt I'm the only one.

Video Game Chat / Help Wanted: Level Designer
« on: August 16, 2008, 06:24:37 PM »
I'm currently designing a game along with a few of my friends, and am desperately in need of someone to design levels. The game is similar in gameplay to Metroid and Cave Story. If anyone wants to help out, please let me know.

Fan Creations / Another song
« on: June 19, 2008, 05:03:09 PM »
I was toying around with ModPlug Tracker when all of a sudden a tune popped into my head. I guess that's a good thing to happen when one is toying around with a tracker, but that's beside the point. As I was humming this tune, I thought to myself, "Why don't I record this tune using only Windows sounds?" I did, and am proud to present to you:

Syncotasis!

In case any of you are wondering, Syncotasis is a nonexistent word. I chose it to ensure that if someone were to search for this song on Google, YouTube, or whatever, they would get this very song.
