Title: Wii Maintenance Mode findings
Post by: Luigalaxy on August 15, 2008, 01:26:37 PM
I have a couple findings from the Wii Maintenance Mode. Here is what changes when you activate it:

-Wii Message Mode disabled

-Internet disabled

-Certain settings can't be changed.

-Turns off after activating any channels.

Channel Preview Screen changes:

Disc Channel: Nothing changes here.

Mii Channel: Nothing changes.

Photo Channel (1.1): The only thing that shows up is the bulletin board backround.

Wii Shop Channel (1.1): Nothing.

News Channel: No message/news appears.

Forcast Channel: No message/current weather appears.

Nintendo Channel: The logo doesn't appear.

Mario Kart Channel: The Mario Kart is in English, but, the Channel is in Japanese. Also, the karts show up like this:

                  ---
---

Everybody Votes Channel: Nothing.

WiiWare/Virtual Console: Nothing.

Check Mii Out Channel: Nothin.

Internet Channel: You should know this by now.

Yeah... is this a homebrew thing, or something like that?

Its...

Yeah... is this a homebrew thing, or something like that?

Nope, but good guess!

Actually, it's this somewhat hidden mode in the Wii menu. Basically, when you see the warning screen when you first turn on the Wii, hold down "-" and "+" and press A and you'll get a notification that you're in Maintenance Mode. No one really knows what it's for. (Besides what it says in its name)

The only thing I find interesting about it is that the Mario Kart channel is in Japaneese.

Maybe it's like Safe Mode on Windows. Maybe it disables everything that could interfere with normal Wii functionality, but I can't imagine what that'd be other than new channels.

I would assume you just do the same thing again to get out of it...

I would assume that since you have to press buttons when booting, it wouldn't enter the maintenance mode if you didn't hit those buttons. Is that really not obvious?

I wonder if there's a boot menu mode.  I ask because the only experience I have with a "maintenance" mode is with my PDA, which also has a boot menu, allowing you to do stuff that will actually destroy your hardware.  Seriously, explosions and whatnot.  I haven't tried it yet.

Can you get out of maintenance mode?

Yes. Going into a channel or turning off your Wii gets you out of it.
