There is a tracking script embedded in the article that breaks the loader when it is blocked. I don't think it was intentionally done, just sloppy.

Mario Chat / Re: A simple question about Yoshi

Tezuka: Shigeru Miyamoto said he wanted Mario to ride a horse! I think he likes horses. (laughs) When we were making Super Mario Bros. 3, he had drawn a picture of Mario on a horse, and hung it on a wall near where he used to sit. I would look at that and think, "I think he wants Mario to ride something." When we started making Super Mario World, we were working with the concept of a dinosaur land, so I had Hino do art for a kind of reptile.

Hino: The first keyword was horse, so I imagined something rather large and first drew up a creature like a large lizard.

Tezuka: It was like a crocodile. (laughs)

Tezuka: Yeah. It felt out of place to have a reptile suddenly appear in Mario's world, so we went back and talked about how maybe it shouldn't be like a crocodile.

Hino: Tezuka had done a rough sketch and it was cute and pretty good, so I polished up Yoshi into his current form based on that.

Tezuka: That happened relatively quickly. I kind of forced the design though, saying, "It's related to turtles." (laughs)

Sao: That's why, instead of a saddle, what's on Yoshi's back is...

Nogami: A shell. Even after I joined the company, Tezuka kept insisting that it was a shell. (laughs)

Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced several enemy-based items:
Jugem/Lakitu's Cloud
Kuribo/Goomba's Shoe
Hammer (Bros.) Suit
and the P-Wing (Patapata/Paratroopa Wing)

The name Patapata Wing was part of the original SMB3 Japanese manual.

However, it also fills the P-Meter, or Power Meter, and derivative power-ups like the P-Acorn don't really make sense with the Patapata name. P also officially stands for Power in the case of the P-Balloon. I'd guess it's the same for the other occurrences.

The N-mark spade card is a reference to Nintendo's playing card designs, which refers to Nintendo.

Many games fit on a single side, so you can put two entire games on a disk.

Site Discussion / Re: Talkback: Super Mario's Release Date Is Missing!

Some new (old) material was revealed. It's too late to address the release date question, but it does have at least one oddity -- Mario must save "Paula" in Donkey Kong.

Iwata is fluent in English. He's actually better when not on the camera.

Game Blog / Finding Luigi - Legend of Parkour
« on: August 24, 2013, 05:04:16 PM »
There was no one like him. In the early days, Parkour was just a pastime. But Luigi...The L Man...he made it into a discipline. He could jump higher. He could jump farther. He was everywhere. And then he was gone. He just slid off the map. And went underground.

Finding Luigi documents Luigi's legendary rise to fame in Parkour and his sudden disappearance from the sport. Highlighting the L-Man's signature moves and incredible mechanics, and featuring testimonials from some of Luigi's closest friends and Parkour colleagues, this is one story you won't want to miss!

Nintendo posted this unlisted video onto YouTube, one of their most unique and well done advertising shorts ever. The "documentary" maps New Super Luigi U into the real world where Luigi, the Toad twins, and Nabbit roam the streets and building tops. Watch it through the link below.

What if Mario had a robotic band to accompany his travels? Musician David Thompson hooked up an NES to a Raspberry Pi computer, Yamaha Disklavier player piano, and a set of drums driven by solenoids. The Raspberry Pi reads in the sounds generated by the NES, converts them into MIDI piano notes and percussion signals, and triggers the robotic instruments to play along with the game - sound effects and all. Watch the impressive result at the link below!
