Arzest is developing the game
I'd never heard of Arzest before, so I looked them up.

Well, there go my expectations for this game.

Yeah.. I don't know why Nintendo allowed them to make another one, after the travesty that is YIDS.

YI should be on consoles anyway, not handhelds.

It never stops bothering me that a game which used to basically be Miyamoto's statement about imaginative, visually-unique games triumphing over prerendered drek has been farmed out and recycled at least twice in the last five years.

Unless that statement was actually sensationalized bullhonk.

Quote from: List of games Arzest has worked on
Wii Play: Motion (Wii)
StreetPass Mii Plaza (Nintendo 3DS) - Additional new features
Time Travelers (3DS, PSP, Vita) - Character models
Yoshi's New Island (Nintendo 3DS)

Well, at least two of those are actual games. Time Travelers is a choose-your-own-adventure story on cartridge.

Unless that statement was actually sensationalized bullhonk.

That's the hypothesis that seems the most likely to me. The translation (quoted on page #2 of that thread) has some rather obvious errors.

That makes me wonder, though... Could Yoshiaki Koizumi's infamous statement of "DKC characters aren't fresh enough so that's why we didn't include them in Jungle Beat" similarly be tabloid hokum? The site that translated the interview (NSider) is apparently not very reliable....

If that Jungle Beat interview was actually mistranslated, then that means DKVine may have gone through about 2-3 years of feeling insulted for nothing.

Upon looking at today's screenshot update, I am slightly more impressed with the game. They're screaming "Snes YI inspired level design" at me, and that is a good thing.

I still don't like how the game looks (particularly Yoshi..and everything in the foreground), but I am willing to play a demo now, at least.

If they try to be more SNES-inspired, they might put Mini-Battles and Poochy in that!

Most reviews claim it's decent. Most that gave it a 5 have 5 as their average game. IGN gave it a 7.8.

..."box" battle?

Edit: Also, Baby Bowser seems to have be redesigned to look exactly like Bowser Jr....again. After he was unredesigned to look like regular Baby Bowser again in Yoshi's Island DS. Can they just not make up their minds?

Edit 2: Also also, Artoon/Arzest really has a thing for sudden time-traveling Bowser, it seems.

Edit 3: So uh, walking pipe dude was really a time-traveling Mario all along? I guess that's kinda new. Makes me sad such an idea was wasted on such a lazy game.

A new nostalgia-baiting Nintendo game is mediocre? Shock of shocks.

Almost as preposterous as a subpar Paper Mario.

EDIT: Started playing. Certainly not at the standard of the original YI, but a vast improvement over YIDS. Anyone else notice a delay as Yoshi prepares an egg to throw?

Apparently "make a game that doesn't suck" never crossed their minds. :V

I think the game is trying to be too much like older games while adding some new game mechanics that ultimately work against it, resulting in a mess of something that ends up with some parts being too different from the original to be liked and some parts being too similar to be liked.

The music tracks that aren't merely an unimaginative arrangement of the same boring tune sound like a baboon mating ritual.

You can't have that battle without the amazing music! You just...can't!

I saw it streamed on Vinesauce, actually. The game looks decent, I would probably be entertained by it. Compared to Yoshi's Island SNES, though, I can definitely see why everyone seems so disappointed.

Someone's trying to fix the music. I hope they don't go insane from having to listen to all the music in the game multiple times.

This fix is more consequential.

At first I thought the whole thing was going to be silence and I grinned.
