How to use edited textures (100% legal no matter how you look at it):
1. Install the Homebrew Channel. This step will be different depending on the version of Wii you have, but
Wiibrew.org will have all the information you need.
2. Get
Gecko OS. When you unzip the download, take the folder "[wherever you unzipped it]\Gecko191\Gecko191\Gecko191\HBC\Gecko191" (it contains boot.elf, icon.png and meta.xml) and paste it into a folder called "apps" in the root of your SD card. The folder's location should look something like this: D:\apps\Gecko191
3. (step 4 is an alternative if you want to skip this) You'll need codes now. You can make them with
this program here. The code for file replacement is this:

You put that in a TXT file, go to File > Load from TXT in the code manager, select the aforementioned TXT, check the code, export to GCT, and make sure it goes into a folder called "codes" in the root of your SD card.
4. If you'd rather skip that, you can
just use mine. The GCT file goes into a folder called "codes" in the root of the SD card. A complete list and description of all the codes in that file is
right here. I typo'd. I meant RSBE01.gct. As you can see there's more in there than you need for just this, but no real cheats.
5. Get the costumes you want. Lots of texture hacking teams have released now, so take from whichever you please. I whipped up
a handy list on Stack Smash so downloading from us is easy.
6. A deep series of folders within folders on the SD card is needed now: D:\private\wii\app\RSBE\pf
Inside that, you'll want a folder called "fighter" for characters, "stage" for stages.
For characters: inside of "fighter" you'll want a folder for each character (or at least the ones for which you're replacing textures).
Here's a screenshot of them all for clarification. Usually you will only need the PCS. Some characters (Zelda, Sheik, Red's Pokémon, Wario, Bowser, some others I forgot) use the PAC as well. Without them, they'll revert to the costume you replaced if they switch/transform/use the Final Smash. Sorry if other Stack Smash members forgot that and uploaed their hacks without both the PCS and PAC.
Anyway, put the PCS (and PAC if it's one of those characters) in the folder for the right character (pokezenigame is Squirtle, pokefushigisou is Ivysaur, pokelizardon is Charizard, purin is Jigglypuff, koopa is Bowser, the rest should be clear). Rename it Fit___XX.pcs. In the blank goes the name of the folder. in place of XX goes the number for the costume you're replacing. A complete list for that can be found
here. Here's
a picture of Ness's if a visual aid helps. If it's a Zelda, Wario, etc. you're replacing, you'd name the matching PAC the same thing, but .pac and not .pcs.
For stages: inside the folder "pf," create "stage." In that, create "melee." All the normal stages are in that--the only other "folder" in stages on the disc is "adventure," for SSE stages. Anyway, you don't have to worry about more folders for stages, nor are there PCSes. Just PACs inside "melee." There's no list for that on Stack Smash, so here's one:
Battlefield: STGBATTLEFIELD.PAC
Yoshi's Island: STGCRAYON.PAC
Delfino Plaza: STGDOLPIC.PAC
75m: STGDONKEY.PAC

Items and other things are more complex. This is all really simple when it gets right down to it.
7. Turn on the Wii with the SD card in the slot
8. Go to the Homebrew Channel
9. Pick Gecko
10. By default, the codes will load when you choose to run the game.
11. Have fun
