What do the mushroom icons on the message board lists represent?

Green mean that there's a post you haven't looked at yet.  Of course, if a section's mushroom is green, you go to it, and without looking at it you go back to the main section, all the mushrooms turn red.

I don't think it has to do with whether you've seen a post there or not as much as it does when the last time someone posted there is.
