Title: Nintendo DS for my cousin
Post by: AbercrombieBaseball on October 14, 2006, 10:50:31 PM
My cousin and I were talking a bit ago and she said she wants a Nintendo DS for Christmas.

Trouble is, I know next to nothing about the DS.

I need to know the following:

1. How much should I expect to pay if I'm going somewhere at 6:00 AM the day after Thanksgiving?
2. What games should I get her? (She's almost 12 and likes Mario)
3. Any accessories recommended?
4. Will I need to get batteries for this or does it have its own battery (like a laptop or cell phone)?

I think I'll be able to get to Circuit City or Target pretty early, but I might not be there at first if I go out with some friends and we want to hit the mall first...will they be in short supply in case we take a long time at the mall buying other stuff?

There are two different types of DS. The original one is going for about $130 I believe, and comes in silver, blue or red (red if you buy it in the special Mario Kart package). The other one, the DS Lite, is smaller and has a brighter screen, among other changes. That sells for $130 also, and comes in pink, black or white. As for your questions:

1. Like I said, probably around $130 for the system itself. Check your local stores to see if they are having a sale or have coupons for that type of thing first.
2. The games you should get are really based on her personal preferences. Since she likes Mario, I recommend Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, and/or possibly Super Princess Peach. Games have a varying price, normally around $20-35, so again, check your local stores for possible discounts.
3. I personally don't have any accessories for my DS, it has a regular headphone jack so you can just use whichever headphones you already have. Oh, there's the Nintendo USB Wi-Fi Connector, which you can plug into your computer and use to play some of the DS games online with people from around the world, in the same sense as Xbox Live. If you're interested in that, I'm sure someone here will explain it in further detail for you.
4. It has a built-in battery pack, and comes with a charging cord, so you don't need to worry about batteries. Once the battery in it dies, plug it into a wall socket and let it charge for an hour or so.

I'm sure there'll be plenty systems for you when you go shopping, seeing as the demand for the system isn't as high as it was when the system was released. You shouldn't have to worry about the store running out of stock, although they may be out of a certain color, in which case you might have to try a different store. Hope this helped

A regular DS sells for $129.99. The superior DS Lite sells for $129.99. Er... well, that's what it says on Wikipedia. Someone correct me, that can't be right.
Well, games. New Super Mario Bros. will stick a smile right onto your cousin's face, guaranteed. If you're an over-achiever and want to get her two games, Super Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS are also good choices. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is also good. None of these make much use of the touch screen, however.
Edit: Yes, games are typically $35, especially the original ones. SM64DS is $30 if I'm right, probably because it's a remake. A GOOD remake though.

Yes, all the old-design DSes that I've seen are still $130 which makes no sense.

Go ahead and get the DS Lite. It comes in three colors now (white, black, and pink). You may want to get it and any games before 6:00 AM the day after Thanksgiving, though.

Yeah, the DS lite is a good choice. As for games, I recommend NSMB and SM64DS like everybody else.

1. Buy her a DS Lite in whichever color you think she'd like. It's the same cost as a regular DS (as Lizrd Dude said, that is ridiculous), and 20 times better.
2. I would suggest:
- Mario Kart DS: $34.99
- Animal Crossing: Wild World $34.99
- New Super Mario Bros.: $34.99
- Super Princess Peach: $34.99
- If she likes action games that are challenging yet fun, I would suggest Metroid Prime Hunters: $29.99
*I wouldn't recommend getting them all at once, if you don't plan on spending too much.*
3. If she is a very sincere Mario fan, I would suggest the Mario skin, cleaning rag, DS Lite case, and extra stylus pack, a name-brand and affordable package available at Toys R Us for $19.99. I have yet to get it, and I think I will, as I need the cleaning rag.
4. It has a very convenient rechargable battery and an Ac Adapter to charge it with. The DS Lite actually has a beter battery life than the original DS, which is a good advantage next to the countless others (I really don't know who wouldn't pick a DS Lite over a DS).
I'm pretty sure there'll be a good stock at any store you go to, be it Target (pronounced Tarzshay, for those who don't know), Toys R Us, or at a Gamestop inside a mall. But, it is always possible that they will be out of the specific color you want to buy.
However, you might want to wait until Wii is released (November 19, 2006--$249.99) to get her any kind of video game system, as she might want a console first. But, the portables are good for what they're named for. Glad to help out.
