Title: Most TV is crap
Post by: Chupperson Weird on June 17, 2007, 12:53:02 AM
Stopping watching TV has done wonders for me. Sorta.

I stay away from the reality crap, and I watch a lot of Boomerang and other cartoons.  The majority of actual TV for me is watching my sports teams.  That and sitcoms like Cheers, Raymond, and lots of others.

I say the same as Chupperson. Though I do watch select shows... actually, Hell's Kitchen is really the only select show right now, because it's an honest skill contest in which no vote for the worst website can stop the best man or woman from winning, I like food, and Chef Ramsay is pretty awesome despite the swear stream. True, American Idol being called a popularity contest is really a "Thank you, Captain Obvious" statement, but after the auditions the show is legitimate Dukar. Other shows are uninteresting, annoying and otherwise not worth my time... and don't get me started on commercials (one exception, the old BLOW'D UP E-Trade commercial).
Unfortunately I don't have a quote to rerail and or underail (neither seem to be real words) the topic. Sorry.

Whenever the TV is on, the only thing that's ever really on is Boomerang. I don't watch TV anywhere near as much as I used to. Now all I have to do is figure a way to not spend as much time on here anymore.

I wish I still got Boomerang. :(

I don't watch a lot of TV anymore either, except for only one show, South Park. I used to watch a lot of The Simpsons recently before they started rerunning the really old episodes, which I did not think were at all funny.

Season 1? If so, I agree.

I like most of the old episodes.  I practically grew up with The Simpsons, and I really wanna see the movie when it comes out.

I'm stating the obvious, but this thread has gone off its monorail.

I know for a fact this one isn't old enough to be classic yet, but I thought it was pretty hilarious..

Me and Mario, we're tight. We're like this. We go bowling on Fridays.

It doesn't have to be old to be classic. About the only requirement is that it has to be funny.

I only have one channel over here and it's not too great. I'll watch America's Funniest Home Videos if I happen to catch it and I only watch National Bingo Night for the sake of spending some time with my parents. Rather sad really.

On the plus side, that's what DVD box sets are for. *hugs Simpsons and Mario Bros. Super Show*

I like some reality shows (read: Amazing Race). I also like most things on Fox, Comedy Central and the Discovery channel. Most everything else on TV sucks.

I don't really watch tv. Just really old, but good movies. I'm the Black-and white shows type. I love TVLAND and sometimes i watch comedy central for the stand-up comedy acts when bored. ::)

But I agree, most television shows are not worth it.

and don't get me started on commercials (one exception, the old BLOW'D UP E-Trade commercial).

I was so angry when the commercial ended and this didn't turn out to be an actual movie. Nowadays commercials make me want to throw up in my mouth. A lot.

There's a lot of examples, but I think the "all adult males are insensitive stupid buffoons" genre of commercials that try to be funny but just wind up over the top and obnoxious is one of the worst offenders right now. Ugh.

Ditto.  Just look at my sig.
Those "Hotel Mario", "Link: Faces of Evil", and "Zelda: Wand of Gamelon" cutscenes are terrible, but with some good movie editing, you get some of the funniest Internet deals of all time.

It's just some crappily edited Philips CDi games' cutouts.
Mostly of them have Link quickly repeat "Ba-ba-ba-ba..."

Dang! I mean, what's the fum IN THAT?

I like TV. I like watching it, talking about it, and leaving it on even when I'm in a different room to annoy others. There's plenty to like about TV. I mean, the Sci-Fi channel just recently started showing anime again. Also, there's Robot Chicken. And The Simpsons. And stand-up comedy.
Title: Re: Most TV is crap

I stopped watching South Park because the new episodes just aren't as funny as the old ones.
Mostly of them have Link quickly repeat "Ba-ba-ba-ba..."

Dang! I mean, what's the fum IN THAT?
The cutscenes in those games are horribly drawn, and the voice acting is terrible.  Altogether, really cheesy  That's what make it so fun.
Oh, and I believe you meant Mario and his "Instruction bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu..." (quickly repeating the 'bu' in 'book') :D

I love TV! Veronica Mars was the best show ever, but it was recently canceled, :(. Seinfeld, Twilight Zone and Colbert Report, and for anime and cartoons DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Home Movies, Futurama, and Shinchan!!! TV is great! Although I hate cultural prostitution like reality TV(except Cops).

My dad and I like to watch The Daily Show and sometimes The Colbert Report and Scrubs.  Other than that, really, we don't watch very much T.V. anymore.

I used to watch DB and DBZ all the time.  And I watched the older episodes of Pokemon when they were on Cartoon Network.

That...was uncalled for. Why did you say that?
Title: Re: Most TV is crap
Post by: Mr. Wiggles on June 20, 2007, 07:08:15 PM
Uh.............Mr. Wiggles...........

WHAT THE DUKAR?

Easy. Veronica Mars is (sorry was) probably the most underrated and underheard of show in the last 3 years. The writing? Great? The characters? Interesting. The plot? A little sensational, but always had lots of depth. Critics, loved it, it had a huge cult following, the entire show's survival was because its fanbase was there, they were active enough to organize rallies to continually renew the show. UPN was smart enough to keep it for their dying years, and they never gave up hope on it when it would continually get slaughtered by Lost on Wednesday nights.

Unfortunately, The CW didn't share the same mindset. They paired it up with Gilmore Girls, hoping their audiences would be one unified demograph that could keep both shows afloat. They requested more romance, and asked them to tone down on the complex mysteries, which ended up being three separate arcs that usually ended up taking second stage to Logan and Veronica's relationship. But that didn't stop the writers from producing a quality show. The 3rd season was epic, but The CW didn't think it was worth keeping around, so it was canned on a small cliffhanger, despite the fact that they considered a spin off series with Veronica as an FBI agent. They even had a pilot for it, but never even gave it a chance.

So yes, that's pretty much the reason I'm glad at least another person acknowledges its greatness.

Oh, and I also used exaggeration to make my point, but it may have flown over some's head.

Did anyone else notice how my post in the sister thread included barely any shows? That's where I come in here.
Yes, most TV is crap. Reality TV is NOT reality, it's marketing. American Idol became a telethon last season (actually, this can be a point to support the previous sentence and the sentence before it.) Also, any other talent show on television right now came straight from American Idol. America's Got Talent: three judges, one girl, one judge very strict (and he even said, "off you go," which is a trademark statement by Simon Cowell.)
There is no good TV anymore. TV died around 2003 when all of the great shows from the 90s were canceled (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Dexter's Laboratory, the old Simpsons, Powerpuff Girls, old Spongebob, etc.)

And for inaccuracy too, maybe?
The current Doctor Who series for the win. And also Smallville isn't half bad these days. All the shows Mr. Melee listed are comedy cartoons. There are a lot more kinds of shows besides those. The truth is, there has always been a pitifully small amount of good television. Saying it "died" because the few shows you liked (not much variety to them anyway, apparently) changed or stopped is just plain illogical. You sound like this guy I have to hear at work complaining about how the only good music ever produced on Earth was mainstream rock and pop from the mid '60s to the mid '80s. In other words, completely ridiculous and baseless!
Title: Re: Most TV is crap
Post by: Mr. Wiggles on June 23, 2007, 01:01:20 PM
I'd also like to say that cancelling Powerpuff Girls and Dexter at that point was a good move, because those two shows were already being dragged through the dirt in that time.

There's also the fact that people overlook great shows like the already ranted about Veronica Mars and Arrested Development.

See, I admire all of those that find the weirdest or most unpopular shows/music/people/etc. and realize their greatness, such as Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, Buckethead, and Dragonforce. Space Ghost had out-of-place humor, and that made it great to me; it could also be characterized as "so bad it's awesome." Buckethead is just...wow. He's so good he doesn't need any singers, and he could play with no one behind him and A-M-A-Z-E everyone. He's just so great, and if you get past the weirdness, you realize he's just a guy putting on a show. Lastly, I'm not sure how popular Dragonforce is, but to me, they're awesome. Their guitarists are incredible, being able to play so fast for so long (their songs are an average of 7 min., and they are the fastest guitar players ever (or at least I've heard)) The vocals may be a bit corny, but they amplify the song, and so do the keyboards (and what's cooler than a keyboard that looks like a guitar?)

My final point is that I have respect for weirdness, as I am one of the weird. I could probably hang out with Les Claypool, and we'd be friends in a few minutes. Weirdness also expresses originality, and I love to be myself. So, praise be to those who only want to be themselves.

Sorry that I got off-topic. Perhaps I could get back on with the topic of The Price is Right (even though TPiR was a great television show.) Does anyone else think that Rosie O'Donnell is NOT the host for The Price is Right (you know, not right for the job?) I'm not saying this because of her preference of types, but I truly think she'd not be a very good host for The Price is Right. There is a possibility it could go down well, though, and Bob Barker says that she "has it." However, I would rather see someone like the host of The Match Game on The Price is Right, Gene Rayburn (unfortunately, he's dead XO.) What do you guys think?

I see this as the most likely scenario here. But, I'm definitley not complaining. Shout Factory went to a lot of trouble to get the show on DVD and must be respected for that. :)

I have all 13 episodes on my Macs, but they aren't the best quality. (especially the white knight episode)  I'm thinking about getting the DVD set to see the episodes in better quality, and to say "I have the Legend of Zelda DVD set!"  Overall, I'm impressed with Shout Factory for getting those episodes on DVD.

I showed one of the bonus episodes from the second SMBSS DVD set to my little cousin, and I think Capt. Lou doing the Mario scared the crap out of her. lol

Well, my cousin is 15 years-old.  If you think about it, that show was aimed for little kids and die hard Mario fans.  She's not really either one of those (she likes Mario, but she's not as hard core as I am).  Heck, I did Link's "Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, Princess!" line to sum up the Zelda cartoons, and she was just shocked (the OMG O_O sort of shocked).  I thought she might like some of the movie references that were made on the SMBSS.  Let's just say I will NOT be showing her anything from the live action Mario movie.

Hey, TMK is a sturdy rock. I'd live under it. Wait, I HAVE lived under it.

I live underground, posting my thoughts and reading your minds.

I wasn't referring to TMK.  I was just saying that I don't go on to many sites other than the forums I go on, and YouTube.

If TMK is the rock, what is the proverbial hard place that goes with it?

The Hard Rock Cafe, maybe?

The hard place that goes with it is FG&S, obviously.

On Monday, Nickelodeon started showing a cartoon based on the Wayside books by Louis Sachar. So far, I've noticed that this stuff is all new stories (or simply stuff I hadn't read), which makes me wonder if they'll ever bring up certain important things like floor 19 or Mrs. Gorf. Other than that, it's not the worst thing on television at 11:30 (or 2:30 if I watch it later on the other Nick channel).

Aww man! Now I have a reason to miss having cable.. I loved those books!

I can't afford cable at the apartment that I live at now, but mabey when we move in about a week, we could afford it.

ON a side note: I am really glad that they have released the SMB3 cartoon on DVD, and that my fiancee loves it just as much as I do. :)

I saw that show Wayside. I loved the books in middle school, but I was disappointed because the character designs were completely unlike how they appeared in the books (which I was accustomed to) and it lacked the witty, bizarre atmosphere perceived in the books. The 19th story did come up in the one episode I saw, though.

Doctor Who is indeed one of the best shows on the small screen. Ever.
Edit: Yeah, Chup was right :/

What? They didn't make a Doctor Who movie yet? This is madness!

They made two theatrical movies unrelated to the series featuring Daleks and some guy actually named Dr. Who in the '60s and one TV movie in the '90s. I'm actually not sure how good an actual movie would turn out.

So...it's not about Dr. Who...and it's about Dr. Who stuff, starring a guy named Dr. Who, but who isn't Dr. Who? Wha?

The main character of the Doctor Who TV show is not named Dr. Who.
The main character of the movies is, and he's also a completely different character. But it is loosely based on Doctor Who stuff, yes.

MAJIDE TIME! Man, I absolutely LOVE Bobobo-bobo-bobo. It's hilarious with plenty of random things to keep you entertained. I also watch One Piece and Naruto, which also are great shows in my opinion. However, those only show up on Toonami every Saturday. On weekdays, I just watch whatever is on, but if it's something I don't like, I change the channel. I don't think that TV started getting bad since 2003, considering that most of my favorite shows were still on then.

I agree, most TV here in America sucks. Anime and Doctor Who are where it's at. (And maybe mystery/comedies like Monk and Psych.)

I like some T.V. Shows, I'm not a big fan of reality shows though. I mostly watch the Simpsons, Scrubs, south park, and that 70's show. I like alot of others, but those would be my top 4.

I remember when parents and children were able to come together to watch something interesting, such as the 7 or 8 o' clock movies, or even Looney Toons.

I really liked the old days, but I'm fine with the newer generation of shows.

Every generation grew up on something different, and today's generation is growing up on radically different stuff than what we grew up on.
