Best: Super Mario World vs. Yoshi's Island... Hard choice... I love both... for decidedly different reasons... But I hate it when people try to put in half-votes... so I'll vote for Yoshi's Island. But it's really just the mood I'm in.
Worst: I don't especially like Super Mario Land. It has good tunes but that's all there is.
-
Best: SMW. It was my first Mario game and it introduced Yoshi.
-
Man best is so hard because most of the great Mario games are 2-D.
Best: I feel the same dilemma from which Bird Person suffers, except I'm torn between SMW, Yoshi's Island and SMB3. I'd have to go and say SMW, just because it's so much more in depth and harder to complete and what not, but SMB3 and Yoshi's island are both AWESOME.
Worst: Does Super Paper Mario count at all? If so, it's my #1 vote. If SPM doesn't apply for this poll, I think I'd have to say SMB2j. While it was fun, it did nothing new except make things harder. It doesn't seem as much as a standalone game as it does an expansion of the first SMB. An unnecessarily difficult expansion at that. Keep in mind though, it's still an alright game. If SMB2j isn't acceptable, then I'd have to say NSMB--although it's still good. It's just kind of a letdown, given that it has no awesome power-ups outside of the classic Mushroom and Fire Flower. I know it's supposed to be New Super Mario Bros., but would it have killed them to include the tanooki feather? NSMW would have been even better because there would be Yoshi riding.
-
Best: Yoshi's Island, but if that leans too much towards Yoshi games then I'd say SMW.
Worst: Dang... NSMB isn't bad, but it's certainly the least good.
-
Does Super Paper Mario count at all?
Best: I'm not sure if it counts because it's 3D at the same time, but if it does, make it my vote for best 2D game because it is also an RPG with Side-quests, Level Ups, Experience Points, Items, etc. If it doesn't count, then I choose Super Mario World because it has a creative map screen, fun, interactive levels, and great secrets (expect to see videos of Super Mario World in the next few months).
Worst: I'd have to say Super Mario Bros. 2(J) for the same reasons as Solid Shroom.
-
NSMB is less good than... Super Mario Land? SML2? I think not.
-
New SMB is great! It's the first sidescrolling Mario game since Super Mario Land 2!
Best: I'd probably have to say SMB3. It expanded on the power up ideas in the first game in a creative and fun way, the maps are fun to explore, and I like the idea of carrying around power ups (up to 28!) I could play this game for hours and never get tired of it. :D
Worst: Mario Teaches Typing.. No, wait: Mario's Early Years. Er.. Ok, so I can't decide.
Nominee: Sports game
-
NSMB is less good than... Super Mario Land? SML2? I think not.
The Super Mario Lands have better music than NSMB, and although they're short, I still think they're a lot of fun--moreso than NSMB.
-
BEST: SMW. Still one of the best side-scrolling platformers I've ever played, never mind one of the best 2D Mario games. The map system, power-ups (Cape Feather FTW), and sheer number of levels made this game awesome.
Worst: Dang... NSMB isn't bad, but it's certainly the least good.
-
Best: I want to say SMW, since that's the one I've logged the most hours on and had the most fun with, but I love SMB3 and YI just as much for different reasons...gah. I'm going with SMW on this one, just because I'd be hard-pressed to find a moment in the game I didn't have fun playing through.
Worst: I can't believe you people are forgetting YIDS...but if that doesn't count for this poll due to being more of a Yoshi game, then I don't have a vote.
-
I'm not forgetting that or Wario: Master of Disguise.
-
Best: Yoshi's Island, but if that leans too much towards Yoshi games then I'd say SMW.
Worst: SMB2J
My vote goes to best sports game.
-
Worst: I can't believe you people are forgetting YIDS...but if that doesn't count for this poll due to being more of a Yoshi game, then I don't have a vote.
What's so bad about Yoshi's Island DS? I thought that was outstanding.
-
Best: Yoshi's Island, without question. Huge levels, lots of secrets, has Yoshi, good soundtrack.
Worst: Probably SMB2 American (the Mario version of Doki Doki Panic). Yeah, original and all that, but I didn't like the game much. Couldn't get far in it. And it obviously wasn't a normal Mario game. I did like Birdo though.
-
Yoshi's Island DS... isn't exactly bad, but I majorly lost interest somewhere around world 3. Also, there is exactly one musical theme in the whole game. And it's only like 4 bars long. This makes the game seem even more boring than it is in the first place.
-
Actually, most Mario games remix the same song throughout. There was a discussion about this somewhere else a bit back...
NSMB is less good than... Super Mario Land? SML2? I think not.
Well, at least those two were semi-original.
-
Yeah, but most of those remixed songs are more than 4 bars are considerably catchier than the one in YIDS.
-
I'm pretty sure I was the one who started the discussion. Whoever did YIDS had the right idea, but failed miserably in the execution.
-
This makes the game seem even more boring than it is in the first place.
If you haven't played past World 3, then I suggest you start it up again. If you say you lost interest in Yoshi's Island DS, then you must've not liked the first Yoshi's Island because both have almost identical gameplay. When you get to World 5 things start to get a lot more difficult.
-
You summed up everything I don't like about YIDS, I'm afraid. It's just YI with a bunch of unnecessary hassle.
-
No, Yoshi's Island has infinitely better level design and an overall cooler feel, along with much, much better music, and no annoying baby-switching puzzles. And Yoshi controls better in YI as well.
-
Worst: SMB2j Reasons already stated. It didn't really introduce anything new to the series, other than maybe the Poison Mushroom. It was basically an expansion of the first game, but with a higher difficulty.
-
I think you people don't understand that its difficulty is what makes it awesome.
-
That depends on how frustratingly difficult the game is. If they go overboard with the challenge, or if there are gameplay glitches that make the game more difficult than they were intended to be, I just can't play it for very long.
-
Best: Super Mario Bros 3
Worst: Mario is Missing! (Honestly, I can't believe that no-one else has nominated this yet!)
-
I change my "Worst" vote to Mario Is Missing. I guess it was a repressed memory. Although Luigi does go up and down streets, so it's kind of not 2D... maybe.
Mario's Time Machine wasn't -quite- as bad... you got interesting scenery and you could surf around and... uh... the time machine looked cool. And I liked the title screen music and museum music. But it was still a bad game, I don't like learning history. I eventually wrote down the answers after I finished the game so I could then finish the game fast enough to get a good ending (what's with this time limit stuff?).
-
What? There was more than one ending in that game?? What was the best ending?
-
I think you people don't understand that its difficulty is what makes it awesome.
Don't forget Luigi Game, Poison Mushrooms and those Springboards that shoot you up off the screen. :D
-
Week 32: 2D Game
Remember: You can vote for the WHOLE MARIOVERSE! There's no need to be picky on whether it leans towards something too much! (Unless it's a cameo...) BTW, Super Paper Mario counts, for both 2-D and 3-D. If the 3-D Nomination ever comes, you will be allowed to vote for SPM.
BEST:
Super Mario World (5)
Yoshi's Island (3)
Super Mario Bros 3 (2)
Super Paper Mario (1)
Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) (1)
WORST:
New Super Mario Bros (3)
Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) (3)
Mario is Missing (2)
Super Mario Land (1)
Super Paper Mario (1)
Yoshi's Island DS (1)
Mario Teaches Typing (.50)
Mario's Early Years {Any} (.50)
Ugh...Tie. Time for the cheap Tiebreaker! (Ding ding ding!)
NOMINATIONS:
Mario Sports game (8)
3D Game (1)
Nintendo System {Which system had the best/worst games?} (2)
Mario Spin-Off (1)
What? There was more than one ending in that game?? What was the best ending?
"Best" Ending: Bowser jumps into his time machine right as Mario confronts him, but the Time Machine malfunctions, and Bowser is sent to 6500000 B.C. (Or something similar to that) He is then squished by a giant Dinosaur foot.
"Worst" Ending: Bowser jumps into his time machine, and goes to Paradise 1999, where he relaxes on a beach.
-
I'd have to say that Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) is worse. It's the same thing as the first SMB except it has new levels and it added a poison mushroom.
-
And way too hard levels at that
-
Man what is wrong with you people. The SMB engine was so great that they didn't feel the need to change it. And you have to actually get good at the levels to do well. Somewhere they figured out that if they made easy games instead, they could make people buy more of them, and we end up with a bunch of weakling gamers.
-
Best: SMW, all the way. SMB2(japan) is a close runner-up though.
Worst: SMB2 (america) 20 levels, 3 music cues, same boss in 13 levels. Come on!!!
-
What? There was more than one ending in that game?? What was the best ending?
Here you go. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeKvjs2Bzf0) Man, it must have sucked for someone to take all that time to complete the game only to get a bad ending for returning the artifacts out of order. It always ticked me off that Bowser sprinted off before you got into the room, it's like I don't have a chance to stick it to him. But since the graphics and animation are so poor, the best ending isn't very satisfying.
And it boggles my mind that the PC version, with its completely different graphics and all, still looks terrible enough that the graphics upgrade isn't worth it. Well, the SNES version had a cooler-looking time machine at least.
-
Man what is wrong with you people. The SMB engine was so great that they didn't feel the need to change it. And you have to actually get good at the levels to do well.
Super Mario Bros. had tighter controls than most other Mario games, such as Super Mario World. I'm not too fond of SMB's controls. And yes, I am good at Super Mario Bros. 2(J) and I've beaten the whole game many times, but it's just not recognizable as a whole new Mario game. To do well in any game, you have to be good at the game. That is the case with all Mario games. Along with that, you might have to try a few of the levels over and over again to beat them. That too is the case with all Mario games. Super Mario Bros. isn't the only game like that.
Somewhere they figured out that if they made easy games instead, they could make people buy more of them, and we end up with a bunch of weakling gamers.
That's hardly the case. Super Mario Bros. is just as easy as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. If making easy games made people buy more of them, and if Super Mario Bros. is as hard as you claim it to be, then explain why Super Mario Bros. is the best selling video game in history.
-
Because it was packed with every NES sold for like 5 years.
But, I never said SMB was hard.
