Title: Sega Admits Defeat: Sonic Game Redesigned for Mario Fans

IGN recently interviewed Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka regarding the upcoming Sonic Colors game for the Wii. Iizuka revealed that the new Sonic title was being designed to appeal more to Mario players...
"From a general game design perspective, in recent years we've been able to introduce Sonic to new fans, a lot of the Nintendo/Mario fans, and because of that, we've made changes to the design, and we've designed things in Sonic Colours that we think will really appeal to people who are unfamiliar with the Sonic brand and the Sonic gameplay. So from that perspective we hope that fans of Mario will really be able to enjoy playing as Sonic in Sonic Colours."
It would appear that Sega has finally admitted defeat, and is attempting to make the new Sonic game more like the Mario games.  Given the slight critical (and fiscal) disparity between the last few Mario and Sonic games, this can only be a good thing.

I see this and can't help but think of Sonic being put into a side-scrolling game with ?-blocks and bricks everywhere. Or in a SMB Crossover-like situation (which is almost the same thing I know).

I sure hope they don't turn the Sonic games into collect-a-thons.

Well, what exactly is wrong with the collect-a-thons? Have you ever played Super Mario Galaxy? The levels are fairly linear similar to the 2D Mario games, and instead of a regular flag post, a Power Star is at the end of the level.

Colors always struck me as imitating galaxy (which is always a good thing) with its whimsy and being in space.

Well, what exactly is wrong with the collect-a-thons? Have you ever played Super Mario Galaxy? The levels are fairly linear similar to the 2D Mario games, and instead of a regular flag post, a Power Star is at the end of the level.

In that way, 3D Mario became more like 3D Sonic.

Not really. 3D Mario games still retain the fun found in all the other Mario games and add new content. Recent 3D Sonic games don't retain the fun found in 2D Sonic games and rarely pose any unique challenges.

They do pose challenges, but those are mostly the side-effects of copious and egregious glitches.
