Title: Have video games ever made you cry?
Post by: DeadAwake on July 19, 2006, 09:15:44 AM
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy17%2FBucketeer%2Fpeach_sad.png&hash=e1b01e45acb45526c3f3219206186a4c)

It's something I used to hear in reviews:  "Super Exploding Barrel Brothers 4 is such an emotional rollercoaster, I almost cried 5 times.  Those poor barrels..."  Et cetera, et cetera.  Seriously, has anyone cried because of a video game?  I haven't--but it's not from lack of trying!  I used to think that having uncontrollable emotions made you a more complex being, and that by not crying at the end of, say, Zelda 64 there was something wrong with me.  I tried so hard to cry!  I really did try to get swept up in the emotion, but alas:  I am far too manly and awesome to allow water to come from anywhere but the manliest and awesomest of places, and on that low note I leave you with the poll.  Please vote with confidence; your vote is protected with the strictest of anonymity the Mushroom Kingdom has to offer.  That probably doesn't count for much, given that the Toads can't seem to protect the royal subjects, much less a teenie, tiny, vote travelling across the internet for all to see...

P.S.  Other valid answers include:  crying because Mom wouldn't buy you a video game; crying because your favorite video game was stolen; and crying because an X-Box fell on your foot.  Please vote accordingly!

Yes I admit it. Of course it was when I was a spoiled seven-year-old and my mom wouldn't buy me a Nintendo 64.

Title: The crying game
Post by: Glorb on July 19, 2006, 09:59:07 AM
The only game that truly made me cry was...wait for it...Planetfall. That's right, not Final Fantasy VII. When Floyd died (OMG spoiler whoops oh crap), I just sniffeled a bit at first, but then I actually started crying. Granted, I was, like, five at the time, but Floyd was one of those really well-developed characters.

I know for a fact I've cried out of frustration from video games at least once, several years ago.  I don't recall actually coming to tears in any games recently, but several games have recently almost brought me to tears of joy.  I think the game that came closest to bringing me to tears of joy was Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, during the scene during the final battle where all the NPCs start cheering for you.

I won't spoil anything, but the endings of Metal Gear Solid 3, Quest for Glory IV and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening made me cry.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I can't remember crying because of a videogame. There could be something in my distant, distant past involving not getting to rent something but I can't remember specifically. I do get twinges of emotion on good endings, etc.
Title: Re: Have video games ever made you cry?
Post by: Sapphira on July 19, 2006, 07:54:41 PM
I don't think I've ever cried from emotion within a game's story, but I have found certain things to be sad or really touching.

I do remember crying several times whenever I've gotten really, really far in a level or game and couldn't save it (at least not yet) and then someone would turn it off on me or the power would go out and I'd have to start over again. Or if I had just finished doing something really, really challenging or time consuming but hadn't gotten to a save point and the same thing happens. Usually it involves anger, not just sobbing helplessly.

If I've cried out of frustration in a game itself, I don't remember, and it would've been a really rare occurence.
I've almost cried from joy from completing something really hard before, but I don't think I ever actually shed tears.

Maybe when I was reeeaallly little I might have cried when my older siblings kicked me out of the room because my presence was messing them up, but I don't remember any actual occasions.  I didn't start playing video games until I was eight.

Yes, really.
REALLY.
In fact, I can think of a game right now.
The Sims 2.
There's just something about seeing your favorite simkid growing up into a great man, only to get killed by a bumbling fool who sleeps in front of the pool ladder, that kills that sim.

But the thing on that game that really pulls on my heartstrings is the way the games views itself on reality. It jokes, yet replicates reality, and giving you a behind the scenes footage on what family life is about, and seeing behind the locked doors.

For example, there was this really nice family. The Roberts. They were a great family, and worked as a team. But when the husband started cheating on his wife, and her knowing, they get into a heated arguement. But what really gets me is not the big things, but the little things. After the couple split up, the kid would pass by his mom's room, and burst into tears, thinking about the state of his family. Every night, he would cry himself to sleep, dreaming horrible dreams. For a secpnd there, the game seemed so real...

I found a scene in Starfox Adventures to be touching enough to turn my head away so I wouldn't have to look at the cuteness/sadness of the scene.

(To be specific, the scene in which Fox says goodbye to Tricky.)

Crying though? Never due to a game itself. I do remember crying about the fact that I accidently erased one of my files for Banjo-Kazooie when I was younger, though.

I also remember crying about breaking my controller (I threw it in frustration playing SM64, I couldn't get Mario to jump out of the moat).

Stupid, brainless things, yes, but I was only around the ages of 7-9 at the time. I cried in situations that got me frustrated when I was younger. Now all I do is swear it off (sorry, Sapph :P), or if I happen to be with friends, I'll probably joke about it and restart to a point before I made a mistake (provided it was a game I could do that in). Crying in front of my friends is something I consider embarassing. :P

Just like Sapph, I've cried because of saving points and someone turning it off. My anger usually results in me crying my eyes out so when my brother turned off LOZ:WW and I was trying to throw the bomb flower into the other statue. I had to go to bed and my gamecube (conicedently) was in his room. I asked him not to turn it off. But in the morning, I went back in to play and he had turned it off, just like I had asked him not to, and I went MAD. And you know why he turned it off? TO play SSBM.

I once cried of frustration on my umpteenth attempt to beat "Survival" mode on Gold in Star Fox Assault. I never did beat that stupid Queen Aparoid on that level of difficulty, and it made me really, really mad.

Thankfully, I've never broken a controller out of frustration.

You don't mean Floyd Pepper, do you?!! XO

I get very attached to my Pokemon in the games, even if they're only rentals(the Pokemon, not the games). Every time one of my Pokemon faints, I shed a tear. It's a good thing the Pokemon don't actually die, otherwise I'd be up to my waist in salt water. (The word censor messed up here!)

Movies make people cry? Well, I can think of one:

FIELD OF DREAMS.

Everyone I know has cried during this movie. In fact, my buddy said "if you don't cry during Field of Dreams, you have no heart".

I've yet to see "The Notebook", but one of my friends was so teary after seeing it I heard she would have been able to fill up the drink cup she had during the movie. Then again, she's arguably the most emotional (and probably the sweetest) person I know--this girl cried when upperclassmen graduated.

I can honestly say that I haven't cried at any point in Field of Dreams.  Yes, it had some touching moments, but nothing that I think I would cry over.  Either way, you read the title wrong, since this is about Games that made you cry, not movies.

I don't think I've ever cried over a game ending or sad moment, though a younger me has gotten close to crying out of annoyance.  Trying to get Ness on SSB was one.  Course, now I handle loss a lot better.  No tears shed, I just walk away (while swearing and calling the game a cheater).

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Wal Mart either. I only go there when absolutely necessary (like if I need, say, a printer ink cartridge and it's the place I'm closest to).

Their CD/DVD/game department isn't that good. I went there looking for a DVD to give to my cousin once and it took me forever to find it. The DVD was a new release at the time too.

Even worse luck with a CD. All they had was mainstream stuff. You would think a huge store like Wal Mart could import some stuff but no. I'm all about Europop (which is sort of strange since I'm a pretty mainstream guy everywhere else). Thankfully I've got a buddy who also hates mainstream so he can download stuff for me. I've found Border's to be best for music.

My uncle had trouble finding my cousin a video game (I think it was a Paper Mario game for the Game Cube, if I recall) at Wal Mart. I was there looking for the DVD that day and he was talking to this guy who didn't seem to know what the game was or where they kept it.

The prices aren't bad (I think a Cannon printer ink cartridge is about $6 for a black one) but they just don't have all that much in means of variety or service.

As far as rentals go, I am usually like that with movies.

I don't really cry when playing games, I just act like a baseball manager and show typical manager frustrations when I lose at games.  Like, I throw my hat on the ground whenever a bad call is made on MVP Baseball 2005.  I usually get my manager tossed out of the game, too.  But I do win my fair share of games, despite the tirades.

Eleventh vote for no. I have never had an experience where I cried during a video game, I have only had experiences where I have been frozen in my tracks because of the graphical and/or story detail that the designers have put into a specific event.

Don't end up losing an easy $20, Lizard Dude... Spoiler:  Remember OoT?  It had blood at the end, when Link put the final plunge into Ganon's dying body.

Furthermore, there is more cel shading. In Phantom Hourglass.
Well yes, I know that. I meant in Twilight Princess.

The only time I can remember crying under a video game related circumstance was when I thought my Game Cube had fried from a lightning storm.  In heart-tugging parts of some games, I do feel emotional, but I've never shed a tear.

I don't remember ever crying when I was younger due to things happening in the game (usually just becasue I had to turn it off and go to bed), but more recently, usually due to something extremely moving.

Take Paper Mario 2, for example.. *spoilers ahead*

.. I kind of sniffled when I found out about Bobbery's wife, and I remember a tear or two during the final moments of the game, when the Crystal Stars are calling for help.

Other than that, I can't really think of anymore.

Does making Peach cry in Super Princess Peach count? :D

What the heck? You are totally totally wrong in that spoiler text, bobman37. He's referring to Final Fantasy IV as the only game to make him cry. The rest is spoilerish.

Title: Re: Have video games ever made you cry?

It was never at M, once a rating changes from RP, it CANNOT go back, only change to another rating (such as GTA going from M to AO and back to M again after re-release).

It was always at RP, and the people you're talking to you about "blood" being in Zelda are crazy and (most likely) incorrect. Cease all further contact from them, please? Kay, thanks.

Yep, not the game itself, but I started to play SMB on my NES on my birthday.  My Grandmother died recently and this is my first birthday without her.  So SMB made me think of how I was introduced to Mario in the first place, and that was at my Grandmother's house.  She was so nice, she would even play it with me.  I still miss her, and to tell you the truth, I don't think I will ever not miss her.

In Sonic Adventure 2, I cried whenever I deleted a Chao. That music with the little picture of the sad Chao walking away and the "All right. You will never see Chao again. Good bye..." Lame, I know. (And it was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, on the GCN, for those who were afraid I defected. :)

PS: He dies, but for some reason Sega decided to bring him back to life one game afterward.

Anyways, I was playing Call of Duty: Finest Hour (I know, I'm addicted to Call of Duty games...), and I got really far. Then some idiot on the Axis threw some grenade and blew the rest of my team up. Luckily, I servived, but then a whole onslaught of Axis came and I died. Darn, I had gotten so far, now I have to restart the level...

Well, they gave him amnesia as an excuse, but when the fans demanded real answers, we got Shadow the Hedgehog, the most pitiful excuse for a Sonic game ever. (Worse than Sonic Shuffle, actually.)

Actually during the final fight against Black Doom, Eggman reveals that he saved Shadow somehow from his death. I'm not sure on the details though, but Shadow never actually died.

I knew that. The point that it was the lamest excuse they could've come up with. I'll bet it took all of two seconds to think of it.

Sorry, it's just that you answered him on how he died and got me confused. But stiil, you're right. It was rediculous. Eggman wasn't even outside of the ARK when Shadow "died." How could he possibly save him from burning up in the atmosphere?
Title: Re: Have video games ever made you cry?
Post by: The Chef on September 27, 2006, 03:16:53 PM
Well, you could say that he didn't burn up in the atmosphere, as Sonic was able to leap out of the Death Egg and fall all the way down to Earth (and land on the Tornado) in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but then again, we don't know how close to Earth the Death Egg was.

Sorry, got a little off-topic here.

I have a new moment that almost made me cry in a video game..

***spoilers ahead***

IN Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, when you get to Star Haven (or whatever the area is called after Star Hill.. it should be Star Haven, but only if you've played previous Mario RPG's.. anyway..), there is a star door there that says you may only pass if you get grown up Luigi to bring this box back to the front area, so you can hit it to prove your worth.

After you get the block and bring it back, Luigi tries to hit it, but it moves (several times), then door calls Luigi forward again, and  asks a question, then offers only 3 answers. When you try all 3 answers, the door will say you should've picked the fourth answer, at which point Luigi says there was no fourth choice(I'm assuming this is what he said.. darn M&L gibberish..), and after a short arugement with the door, Luigi breaks down and cries because he thinks they can't get into the area because of him, at which point Mario and babies start arguing/hitting the door with the hammer.

I almost cried at this scene myself, for it was a very touching scene, after the door let the babies and Mario beat on him for a bit..

*sniff* Poor Luigi..

I completely agree with what Toad said. Not only did that part make me cry, but I refused to play the game for the rest of the day. That didn't seem to keep me from becoming the first person on GameFAQs to reach level 100 though. Heh heh heh.

And lookie here. I even have a video of that part. Recorded it myself. ^_^

Also, there was a part or two of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon that made me a bit misty-eyed...

For the second time, I have lost in the World Series on MVP Baseball 2005.  I won the first game, but I was then schooled, being outscored 18-4 in the next 4 games.
