Fantastic Four Help (picking up items)

If anyone has played this game, I am having major trouble trying to pick up an item using Ben. It says to use the control pad and tap twice, whatever that means, and use the A and B to throw but I press the control pad and ben just runs into the item. Plz help, thank you.

It means to hit that direction twice on the control pad. I haven't played the game so I don't know more than that.
