Video Game Chat / League of Legends
« on: October 22, 2012, 03:08:32 PM »
I peered through Video Game Chat and noticed that there wasn't a topic dedicated to the discussion of this popular DotA mod. It's an online multiplayer battle arena tower defense game, which, to put it simply, means teaming up with other players to knock down an opponent's turrets and eventually their nexus. There are five people to each team with over 100 characters to pick from, each with their own talents and abilities. Winning is a matter of "building" your champion with buffs bought with gold earned by killing enemies and minions. I mean it when I say a LOT of people play it: an official infographic released in October of this year showed that it averages 12 million players daily. So I thought it deserved its own topic.

So...does anyone else besides myself play it? If so, who's your favorite champion?

Since we don't have any reservations about executing retarded people, we should probably execute Rick Perry next.

Not at the Dinner Table / Herman Cain lol

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/trending-now/herman-cain-9-9-9-plan-coming-simcity-160214953.html

So...apparently, Herman Cain's economic plan bares striking resemblance to the tax system in Sim City IV. Under his plan, corporate income tax, personal income tax and national sales tax would all be set at 9%. In SimCity 4, "residents of the game's virtual city also lived under a 9-9-9 tax plan (because of the 9% commercial, industrial, and residential taxes)."

To me this would be really funny if it weren't so scary. What say you, dear residents of the forum?

General Chat / Music Mashups
« on: September 28, 2011, 03:37:46 PM »
Have any good song mashups you'd like to share? Post 'em and discuss if they sound better than the originals. Feel free to post your own.

This is is (obviously) a mashup of Nirvana's Come As You Are and Killing Joke's Eighties. Both bands "borrowed" (for lack of a better term) the rift from a song called Life Goes On by The [darn]ed. Personally I think the mashup sounds better than its conjuncts. They complement each other quite nicely.

Not at the Dinner Table / Conservatism is True
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:09:53 AM »
http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2011/06/conservatism-is-true.html

This is a very interesting article about conservatism by Andrew Sullivan, a conservative who also happens to be gay. He talks about conservatism as a political philosophy, how it's tied closer to "humankind's crooked timber," and why the Republican Party just doesn't get it.

I'm not a conservative; most of my political philosophy is derived from the writings of John Stuart Mill (a liberal). Nevertheless, I like Sullivan's idea of what it means to be a conservative. Read it, but disregard the dogma of the Republican Party.

Forum Games / An unexpected execution
« on: November 14, 2010, 04:03:28 AM »
Hey guys let's play a game.

A judge tells a condemned prisoner that he will be hanged at noon on one weekday during the following week, but that the execution will be a surprise to the prisoner. He will not know the day of the hanging until the executioner knocks on his cell door at noon that day.

Having reflected on his sentence, the prisoner draws the conclusion that he will escape from the hanging. His reasoning is in several parts:

1. He begins by concluding that the "surprise hanging" can't be on a Friday, as if he hasn't been hanged by Thursday, there is only one day left; therefore, it won't be a surprise if he's hanged on a Friday. Since the judge's sentence stipulated that the hanging would be a surprise to him, he concludes it cannot occur on Friday.

2. He then reasons that the surprise hanging cannot be on Thursday either, because Friday has already been eliminated and if he hasn't been hanged by Wednesday night, the hanging must occur on Thursday, making a Thursday hanging not a surprise either. By similar reasoning he concludes that the hanging can also not occur on Wednesday, Tuesday or Monday.

Joyfully he retires to his cell confident that the hanging will not occur at all.

The next week, the executioner knocks on the prisoner's door at noon on Wednesday — which, despite all the above, will still be an utter surprise to him. Everything the judge said has come true.

Where did the prisoner's logic go wrong?
