General Chat / What is the best month to have a birthday?
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:33:19 AM »
Some months are too close to Christmas, and you end up getting half the toys!  Other months have sucky weather, and a couple of months you can't even look forward to your birthday 'cause it means going back to school.  On the other hand, if you have your birthday to look forward to, that can make going back to school not so bad...

It's all in how you look at it.  What's the best month for a birthday?

Say there's a thread.  Maybe this thread is older than you.  It's big and would take, like, 5 years to read.  Wouldn't it be nice if you could search that individual thread?  That way you wouldn't have to preface your post with:  "I apologize if this has been said before..." and nobody would respond to you with, "Read the thread, jeez."

Jeez.

Mario Chat / Favorite Mario Pictures
« on: December 10, 2006, 12:57:36 AM »
Feel free to elaborate or tell stories.  In fact--if you don't--I'll hit you with a crusty rod.

There are a lot of Mario pictures out there... Some come from America, some from Japan, and still others from immaterial beings referred to as "fan artists".  Some come from Nintendo.  Some come from an old notebook you used in 2nd grade... It's time to share your favorites.

I know I'm not the only one who loves the ending sequence for SMW.  And I certainly hope I'm not the only one who left this illustration on the TV for hours...

... but we're just getting started.  I was visiting the official site for SM64:DS when I found this background.  I like it because it really feels like you're inside the castle:

I apologize for the blurriness, but it's all for artistic effect, you know.  Anyway, here's another one; I bet you've seen it before:

I like it because the four big characters are together, and each one of them is real--with a personality.  I can just stare and think about what's going through each person's mind.  Also, Mario's using a Game Boy--just like the one I have!  The only thing missing is Toad, and he may very well be shoved inside Peach's dress at that moment, so who knows?  Maybe no one's missing after all!

This'll be fun!  Now, start sharing or watch out for rusty cods...

Video Game Chat / Your Personal Secrets Pertaining To Video Games
« on: October 17, 2006, 10:54:49 AM »

Who knows, maybe this is a dumb idea--but as a member of this board, I feel duty-bound to liven this place up when there is a drought of fun topics.  As you can see, I have attached my First-Post-Picture™ up there to put you in a good, silly mood.

Now, here are the rules:  You must share a personal video gaming secret.  This means one thing:  Nobody else knows about it.  Once you share it, it will no longer be a secret.  Okay?

But I'm not talking about "hold Down on the white platform and get a whistle" type secrets:  Everyone knows those.  I'm talking about secrets like the following--broadcast for the first time ever to you, the fine readers of TMK...

GAME:  Mickey Mouse's Magical Quest.  LEVEL:  Fire.

It's been a good... well, ten years since I've played this game, but I can remember the secret clear as day.  Mid-way through the level, there is a series of platforms above a lava pit.  At this point, I invariably think of the cute girl named Allison from my third grade class and how I should buy her a phone to win her over.  Why?  Well, I remember the first time it happened:  I must've been 9 years old... During this tricky maneuver, the stress had built up and my mind sort of released itself for a split second--like a bullet from the chamber--and the first place it went was Mickey Mouse merchandise.  From there, I recalled a J.C. Penney catalog with an entire section dedicated to Mickey Mouse merchandise, and I remembered how expensive and therefore high-quality it must have been.  I remembered the cute girl Allison having such things in her room--but she didn't have a phone.  I knew from Clarissa Explains It All that girls LOVE phones, and that Allison would probably fall in love with me if I bought her an expensive Mickey Mouse phone, because girls also love things that match what they already have.

I promise you that, to this very day, if I were to play the Fire Level, I would unwilling think that thought--plucked straight from a 9-year-old's brain.

BONUS SECRET:

When my brother wonders aloud, "How the heck did our GameCube controllers go bad like that," and I respond, "I don't know," I am a BIG, FAT LIAR because I broke them myself during a frustrating SSBM match.  Nobody suspects it, because they don't think I'm the type to throw things.

Site Discussion / TMK Game Reviews
« on: October 14, 2006, 12:23:56 PM »
I really appreciate the reviews you guys have been putting out lately.  Normally, I skip straight to the end and check the final scores--but with TMK it's different.  I can actually get a good feel for the game.  By the time I'm done, it's like the reviewer and I are on the same page, and the numerical scores are just a formality.

What's also strange:  TMK is a Mario fan site... Yet, the reviews are utterly objective.  I just re-read the March of the Minis review, and it basically gives a fact-based account of what to expect from the game.  That may sound boring--even amateur--but it allows one to form an opinion on one's own.  It's perfect.

Anyway, I appreciate it and just wanted to let you know.  I'm sure most others feel the same.  Please keep up the good work.

General Chat / Scare Me.

I haven't had a good scare in many years.  As a kid, I could scare easily, and I want to know that feeling again.  Please do everything in your power to make me call into doubt the security of this world.

I know the chips are stacked against you, being behind a computer and all, but please try.  Do it in the spirit of Halloween, or today being Friday the 13th--whatever.  Just have a go.  Don't make it last too long, though.  Remember I haven't been scared in years, so that may result in a heart attack.

Estrogen free.

That made me laugh for some reason--maybe because I'm a SEXIST PIG, but I hope not.  Anyway, I enjoyed the newscast, too.  Thanks for the mailbag, guys.

Video Game Chat / Have video games ever made you cry?
« on: July 19, 2006, 09:15:44 AM »

It's something I used to hear in reviews:  "Super Exploding Barrel Brothers 4 is such an emotional rollercoaster, I almost cried 5 times.  Those poor barrels..."  Et cetera, et cetera.  Seriously, has anyone cried because of a video game?  I haven't--but it's not from lack of trying!  I used to think that having uncontrollable emotions made you a more complex being, and that by not crying at the end of, say, Zelda 64 there was something wrong with me.  I tried so hard to cry!  I really did try to get swept up in the emotion, but alas:  I am far too manly and awesome to allow water to come from anywhere but the manliest and awesomest of places, and on that low note I leave you with the poll.  Please vote with confidence; your vote is protected with the strictest of anonymity the Mushroom Kingdom has to offer.  That probably doesn't count for much, given that the Toads can't seem to protect the royal subjects, much less a teenie, tiny, vote travelling across the internet for all to see...

P.S.  Other valid answers include:  crying because Mom wouldn't buy you a video game; crying because your favorite video game was stolen; and crying because an X-Box fell on your foot.  Please vote accordingly!

If you've played any Nintendo games from the past couple of years, chances are you've seen something like the above.  What are your thoughts on it?  You are allowed to retract your vote, because it's easy to be hasty.  Here are some things to think about:

  • What if the warning screen has actually saved lives?
  • If you add up all the time it's wasted--millions of people having to wait through that screen, many, many times--and it turns out to be more than a lifetime multiplied by the number of lives saved, does that defeat the purpose?
  • Every Nintendo game is supposed to have the warning screen from now on.  I think it's built into the Wii, like it is with DS.  Shouldn't we be able to turn it off?

Video Game Chat / Pause
« on: April 18, 2006, 09:43:05 PM »

This topic is all about the video game phenomenon known as "pause".  Here we can discuss any thoughts relating to "pause", but I will provide some starting points.  Please help yourself:

  • What's the longest you've ever left a game paused?
  • What's your favorite pause screen or sound effect?  Why?
  • Have you ever lied to your mom about being unable to pause?
  • If you added up all the pauses you've ever done, how much of your life has been spent in pause mode?

If leaving my DS in sleep mode counts as pausing, my record is two days.  Otherwise, I've been known to keep my Super Nintendo paused for several hours to go out for ice cream or a bike ride.

I'll cut to the chase:  How did you get such good images?  Are these official?  Did you have to break into NoA HQ to get them at such high resolution?  Anyway, I like them a lot.  Thanks for sharing!

Video Game Chat / The Ultimate Poll [NP's Top 200]
« on: December 21, 2005, 01:23:31 PM »
As you may already know, Nintendo Power recently printed its 200th issue.  To commemorate the event, for the past five months, they've been publishing a list of what they claim to be the 200 best Nintendo games of all time.

As you may already know, said list is rubbish.  Commence voting!
