Title: Revolution Peripherals
Post by: boomstix on October 01, 2005, 04:03:11 PM
We already know that the Revolution controller will have 1. a nunchuck-style analog stick with two Z buttons 2. a classic-style "shell" the freehand controller goes into. I've been thinking; what if some of these were peripherals?

-A steering wheel (possibly with grip-sensitivity)
-A lightgun-shaped shell with a trigger and other things of that sort
-A sword add-on
-A glove that you stick the controller onto and then box! (Or pet your dog on Nintendogs Revolution)

What do YOU think Nintendo and other companies can do with this?

BOOM is for BOOMSTIX!

Oh no.......those things look so stupid. They look like a DVD control thing, and I can't get those to work at all! I knew something like this was going to happen. The Gamecube one was so simple, and so easy, and now this. I'm sorry.......but I don't think this is a good thing.

Darn, I was hoping someone didn't post about this already...

Anyway, it looks pretty neat to me. But someone in a chatroom I'm in right now is complaining about it looking like a TV remote and having some buttons that look impossible to press.

How can you not get those things to work when you haven't even tried it? Most of the reviews have been positive. It took me 30 seconds to get an initial reaction and I gotta say I'm impressed. Nintendo was right when they promised to be different. I can't wait to try it out for myself.

The only downside seems to be no rechargeable battery like the SP/DS.

I just think it's cool that Eclipsed Moon was the first one to post about it. ;D

EDIT: If you recall the Revolutionary Wars, then you'll see that some people were right in guessing that this generation of consoles would give birth to the two-piece controller . . .

I'm worried that I won't be able to accurately/comfortably use the joystick peripheral - without a second hand to hold the controller in place, it seems like the joystick would be awkward to use.  As for the main controller...it's definitely different, I'll give them that.

It's definitely not what I expected. And I'm thankful for that.

It looks quite interesting, and I can't wait to see how it works.

I'll reserve my judgement of it until I get my hands on it.

I don't know.. I'm with BlackMage: I'm not gonna be like "OH THIS IS CRAP STUPID STUPID IM STUPID BECAUSE I ASSUME CRAP RIGHT OFF THE BAT" but first impression is saying "eh, annoying at first millisecond glance, then you kinda see what's going on."

Can't wait for the Revo...

ED__it: Well... what I'm worried about is the right side. They're seperate so you can't reposition the right one (because of its length) well unless you make it "hop" back in your hand to get it situated, if you know what I mean.

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick, Senior Director of Marketing for Nintendo Europe: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

See, problem I have with that is that, for games that don't use an analog stick, using the controller can be really dissociative. I mean, I could see myself holding the thing sideways and having to learn how to control the character with 90 degree rotation... unless there's a way in the games to determine which arrow is "up" on the control pad.

That said, I like the idea of holding the Analog in one hand while the buttons go in the other -- Although I;m somewhat worried about there being just the two buttons on the bottom. The button DO seem a bit "spread out" for a veritcal controller.

I'll just have to wait and see if any of these compaints are founded.

NO NO NO NO NO! That is the worst controller ever! Nintendo has gone WAY overboard about this invovation thing. The DS touch panel was awesome, but this...no. Even the more conventional-shaped controller that was debunked disappointed me. That thing was this sleek controller device, but it lacked an analog stick, D-Pad and shoulder buttons, instead making 95% of the controller a big fat wierd touch-panel (no graphics, just a touch panel) and had the A, B, X and Y buttons shoved all the way at the top, nigh-unreachable. If either of these controllers are chosen, I simply cannot own a console that has such a controller.

Problems:

1) I can hardly operate a regular remote control without looking at it.
2) How will I reach the buttons on the bottom?
3) Has anyone here tried the Goldeneye two controller option? It is quite difficult, since you can bablance the ontrol stck with you other hand, to equilize pressure.

Otherwise, Ninteno wont have to worry about anyone copying it.

I think the company that made the Gamecube controller can't fail at making any other controller.  It probably works out, but without actually having it myself, I wouldn't know.

I am still so amazed by the Gamecube controller, no matter how long I've had it.  It's like they dipped someone's hand into liquid controller and let it dry with the imprint of human hands around it.

How I think it works is that since the control stick is an attachment, that while it's attached, you hold the control stick with your left hand, and in your right hand the other part, while using the control stick you can only use the top four controls but without the control stick attachment you hold it with both hands so, you can reach all the buttons only without the control stick attachment.

Insane Steve, you have a point, but after I thought about it, they just aren't wanting to do what everyone else does and jam & cludder as many buttons, etc. as they can on top. I'd enjoy the spacing, but.. two Z buttons?! OMG.

I waited forever for my suddenly slow computer to download that picture and was getting so excited I was about to eat my keyboard.  Then I see these shiny TV remotes and suddenly I feel like I just got clobbered with hammers from the Hammer Bros.  WTD?!  Then the rest of the pictures downlaod and I see the conected thing and think WTD, that's sweet!  I can't wait to try it out in stores and feel like I'm using equipment from Star Trek.  Go Nintendo!

MB: Do you mean the special controller will let you plug NES, SNES, and N64 controllers in that thing?!  Or did he mean something else.  Recently I have really wanted Nintendo to make little things that you plug into the Rev and the other end is shaped for the retro controller, so I hope that's what it is.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

I have just been able to see these(my modem was acting screwy), and I must admit, when I first saw them, I was dissapointed.  I ws actually expecting something like a controller of yester-year.

I was confused on how some of you were saying it was cool.  "It's a remote to my T.V.! Not a controller to one of the Next-Gen!"  Granted, I could have seen myself getting used to it, in time, but I couldn't help notice a few things that were...off.

I continued to read down, and watched the video, and I think, now, that it might have just been the first shock of seeing something I did not even imagine that made me react to it.  With the teaser video, and time to calm myself, I now realize that Nintendo has done well, and made a new plane to gaming.

No the special controller will be tailor made with the controllers of the NES, SNES and N64 in mind. It will basically have a docking bay for the "Freehand" (as they call it) and it will work with third party titles and retro games.

>"amd retarded.if..." ; "is their any low that nintendo will stoop to?"

First quote: Never mind.

Second quote: In this case, a low could actually be a high-- being that instead of calling it a "stupid game controller," you could try "entirely new controller." I certainly won't degrade its reputation based on radically different design. Instead, I'm going to wait until I have felt it and how it works before proclaiming "...this is a dark day for Nintendo."

Besides, if you haven't noticed, this is the base building block. Older, standard controllers will be revamped and available for use with Nintendo's new console.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that it's "there," not "their." Oh yeah, and EM's post must have taken far less time to type.

I didn't notice until just now that the controller is cordless.  I must have brain fog...  I don't think the control stick will be as difficult since it has the corners so you can regulate it's motions ... wow, that makes me think of Machoke's "power save belt".  What's wrong with me?  Ah, phooey.

I won't get the revolution, due to that fact that it costs money, so I'd be grateful to have a controller at all.

I know they are taking a minimal approach, but I'd like to see a few more buttons.  At least a "B" button near the big "A", and an "x" and "y" in the SNES configuration with the "a" and "b".  I'm still in a "fist" impression honeymoon phase so I might change my mind later.

At first I didn't get the expansion slot for the analog controller, but now I can see many possiblities for it.  I'm short on time now so I'll just leave you with the images.

I was searching with Google for a possible image of what TEM mentioned, thinking that probably others have thought of the same thing just as they have with the images above. I found no such image, but I cam across this funny (and unrelated) paragraph instead:

I doubt you'd be forced to imitate the people in the Nintendo video. That's for dramatic effect. Realistically, there's not much more motion involved than computer gaming with keyboard + mouse, if you want to be low-key about it. Anyway, have you watched other people play video games? A lot of them wave their controllers around like a spaz anyway. At least with the Revolution controller, it would actually have an effect.

Post by: Koopaslaya on September 20, 2005, 07:01:32 PM
I have been doing a lot of thinking about this. I have come up with several points, some good, some bad. I am going to break down each point and then summarize them at the end.

1) Good Idea. I like the motion sensative controller, however it seems like it may be difficult to use, or to get the hang of.

2) Not enough Buttons! For many games the single 2 bottons that are reachable in the normal position are not sufficient. Don't tell me about the "shells," I am getting there. I feel it will be difficult to play many of the new, more complicated games with 2 buttons.

3) "The Shells." This is a money making gimic. If you want to play THIs game, you will need this shell, because the normal controller is not sufficient. This will happen to many games, mark my words. If they can make and sell new games at $50, that will leave $10 for a new "shell." Seems stupid to me. Make the games at $50, and dont make us spend anymore money.

4) Position of the controller. Most people I know do not hold a controller at a straight angle while playing. That used to have no effect on the game play, now it has all the effect. Seems a little fishy to me.

5) Joystick. Has anyone here *tried* to play golgeneye single player with the two controller mode? I have, it is most difficult to hold two contollers at the same time and controll with them both.

Now... don't get me wrong, good idea by Nintendo trying to pioner a new era in gaming. I respect that. Nintendo did a wonderful job with the system itself, and I hope with the games as well. The controller is also an excellent Idea, but my main point in this rambling is: Great idea, Poor execution. I know that I will make several enemies with this post, and I could very well be wrong. From hat I have seen, gameplay and picture wise, I am slightly confused why. But, I must totally judge it for myself when I actually play it. I can only hope that I will be wrong.

That controller seems too bizarre and difficult to manuver. Also, What's the point of having two peices to it??? Game controllers have been succsesfull in the past by having a simple structure, and that dosent seem very simple to me.
Title: Re: Revolution controller revealed!
Post by: Yoshisaurus Rex on September 23, 2005, 09:48:16 PM
I bet it could become simple if you get used to it.

Insane Steve: at first I didn't know what you were talking about and then I finally realised the obvious.  Do you think that maybe it's possible that the "inside machinary" or whatever behind the control pad could flip over so that right becomes up and etc.?  I don't know how else they could do it, except for manually turning something or hitting a switch that changes the pad to a second set of buttons.

In the Rev controller video on Nintendo they said that you could play musical instruments.  I hope there will be a drumming game because I've always wanted to learn how to play them (one reason I got Donkey Konga).

The picture MB put up with the "shell" looks exactly like a GameCube controller. I wouldn't mind that.

Although the design of that looks somewhat less heavy, I think the first one is more likely, being that the remote points at the TV, in case you want to combine a bit of old-style analog and new-style pointing.

Also, the second shell's button layout is crappy and obviously something would need to plug into the bottom of the Rev controller; nothing is in that shot.

The second one looks less comfortable to hold, and makes the d-pad easier to use than the stick. (like the PS1-2 controllers). I like the stick better.

I want a red Revolution that will stand out against all my other black, gray, and platnium controllers so it won't get lost as easy. I can't believe black is winning on the IGN vote.

IMHO:

NES (spectulation) > Red > White > all other colors.

Vote for your fav color here:

http://cube.ign.com/articles/654/654254p1.html

Make your own Rev controller:

http://number05.blog.jeuxvideo.com/images/gd/1127311529.jpg

It's easy to find the red Revolution controller even in these low quality pics I took with my cell phone.

Notice how quick you found the red controller.  Now imagine if it had been black.

(Hopefully pushing this thread to the top will help reduce the amount of new Revolution threads.)

I don't have 1/2 as many controllers & remotes, there. But my DirecTV remote is white and all of my other controllers are gray. I think I want a Black one (I'm getting a black revolution, too.) My second will be green and my third will be... white or blue. Or see-thru. Or Red. Don't forget that you'll probably get more than one for playing with your friends outside the FF's. I'm not getting any more than 2 extra ones. The more you have, the more that break!

I do hope it will be backward compatible. And, against everyone else, I hope it'll play DVDs. The right way, unlike the PS2.

If birds breathed fire everytime they posted, the forum would''ve blow''d up by now.

Bird Person, the Rev will be backward compatible.  It will play GCN disc, and have all the first party and probably a lot of 3rd party NES, SNES, and N64 games for download.  Imagine play SMB by moving the controller.

The Rev will play DVDs if you pay a little extra for the doggle (or is it doogle?) key.  What do you mean by "the right way"?

I'd like a blue controller since I don't have any that color.  Clear would be nice too.

As soon as we get online multi-player Revolution games, I think we need to set up some Mario Kart tournaments here!

Title: Re: Revolution controller revealed!
Post by: BP on October 13, 2005, 12:03:38 AM
Guess what... Today (I am in 8th grade) I had to write a summary of an internet article. So I chose one about the Revolution. On the way through my search I found an FAQ: It's gonna play DVDs IF you "buy an additional dongle that inserts in the front of the machine." So for the many of you who don't want it to, complain no more. It seems it can hook up to your computer monitor instead of your TV as an option. And yes, games will be downloadable.  So I'll finally get retro SMB2 (YES!). But that will cost money. the 5 official colors so far are black, white, red, green, and pink.
So yeah, choose between internet & Revolution simultaneously or TV & Revolution simultaneously. I think I'll use my tv.
I promised my best friend thatif the revolution played gemcube games I'd give him my gamecube, Mario Party 4, a crappy memory card and a controller for christmas. I guess I wouldn't need them anymore...

Why do they give electric toothbrushes names like there are different models? They''re not cars!

Do they really call it "graduation" there? You still have 4 more years to go after 8th grade. Sure, you're going to enter a new school, but it's of no big importance like graduating high school. There wasn't any special ceremony when I left 8th grade for high school, except for a "good-bye, have fun in high school" dance.

Title: Re: Revolution controller revealed!
Post by: Yoshisaurus Rex on November 22, 2005, 11:32:58 AM
I think graduation after 8th grade is a great idea.  Sure it's just high school you're going to, but this way you can kind of get a feel for the real thing (and help your parents mentally prepare for it!).  Plus you get a gift so that is worth it.  I kind of wish I had a graduation thing after 8th grade.

Does anyone want an X and Y button over the A?  I want that.  But maybe those would get in the way when you turn the remote sideways.  When the final design for the controller is out, maybe it will look a whole lot better and more futuristic.

And IGN says that Nintendo said they haven't revealed everything about the Rev yet so that's really good news.

Title: Nintendo Revolution controller
Post by: Mario Maniac on December 05, 2005, 07:38:58 PM
Here are some ideas I came up with for the Nintendo ‘Revolution’ controller

Potential uses:
            • Note: The ‘Revolution’ controller can detect 3D movement and point to objects on a TV screen.

1. Camera control
2. Baseball bat
3. Tennis racket
4. Conductor’s baton
5. Flashlight
6. Sword
7. Steer vehicle
8. Paintbrush
9. Jump
10. Drill
11. Aim gun
12. Point-and-click (i.e. RTS game)
13. Chop up food

Nintendo ‘Revolution’ facts:
• The ‘Revolution’ can connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for online gaming.
• The ‘Revolution’ can play all GameCube games.
• The ‘Revolution’ can download classic NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 titles through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
• The ‘Revolution’ is small and compact, approximately the size of three DVD cases stacked together.

You add the little control stick, nunchuck-style. And, for the picky unadventrous people, they'll most likely include a shell for free. I certainly won't be using one of those. I like the look of the new controller! Could be handy if you break one of your hands. View the previous pages, this is the most informative topic in the whole latest news board.

I take it you've never used the DVD function on a PS2.
Title: Re: Revolution controller revealed!

DVD's better not mess up the REV's lens like the PS2. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, my sister has a PS2 and it doesn't read DVD's anymore and she had to get a DVD player. I still don't have my own DVD player yet ;)

And about the remote, you pretty much need one if you want to do ANYTHING with our DVD besides play (on the PS2). But the Revolution controller is a remote. Hmmm.... I guess it might be like
D-Pad- Menu Navigation
Start- Pause
Select- Stop
Home- Back to main menu
A- Menu selection(every DVD has a play option on the menu)
B- Zoom
a- Rewind
b- Fast forward
And... we're out of buttons. It's not like MOST DVD players record anyway. Well there are all the numbers, but when are those important on a DVD?

You're right, I never have used one before (because I've neve had anything besides a Nintendo system).  But I did know that you could use the game remotes for that, I just didn't know if this had enough buttons.  Using the motion-sensing remote for DVD stuff could be difficult in some areas.  Except for camera control!

For the DVD PS2 function, you can't use the controller for anything but Play and Stop, which forces you to get a DVD rremote special for the PS2 if you want to do anything else. Sounds like a money making strategy if you ask me.
