Title: New Wii firmware update
Post by: Super-Jesse on August 07, 2007, 02:58:33 AM
Nintendo's maintenance  to the Wii Shop Channel earlier today seems to have been a sign of what was to come: A new update for the Wii. The update details what work was done to the Shop Channel, as well as what other changes owners can expect. The download roughly takes about 1 minute, and here's the skinny:

Wii Menu
- Keyboard functionality has been added (Internet Channel not compatible yet).
- The current time according to your system clock is now displayed on the Wii Menu.
- The latest news and weather highlights can now be seen from the Wii Menu (much like the Everybody Votes Channel shows you the most recent question).
- The daily playtime letter is now Wii white.
- Scrolling messages in the Message Board now uses a different sound.
- Address Book entries can now be shifted around using A+B but only to empty spaces.
- A new warning stating that modified Wii's may cease to function after adding a new firmware update.

Wii Shop Channel
- Keyboard functionality has been added.
- Titles you've downloaded can now be accessed on the main Shop page.
- New search options for the Wii Shop Channel:
      * You can sort games by genre or publisher and see the amount of titles in that category
      * You can now type in the full or partial name of the game you are looking for.
- Nintendo now recommends titles you should download, featuring the most popular titles and the most recent additons.
- Nintendo now lists for users the most popular titles based on the number of downloads (top 10).

In case you were wondering, Paper Mario (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/pm-vc), Super Mario Bros. (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/smb-vc), Super Mario Bros. 2 (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/smb2-vc), Mario Kart 64 (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/mk64-vc), Super Mario World (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/smw-vc), & Super Mario 64 (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/sm64-vc) take the top six spots on the list as of today.

That's all I was able to notice. If you can add anything, please comment in the Fungi Forums!

Update: USB keyboard functionality has been added to the list. I just sent a message using my keyboard on the Wii and it worked perfectly!

Couple other things:

The Wii Menu loads two seconds faster, and you can navigate the system options menu with the plus and minus buttons.

All the clock needs is the 24 noise, then I'll be all set.

A new "AOSS" button has been added to the Internet setup screen.

I only know this because I have to constantly re-install my USB connector to get it to work.

XD

Also, there's a fancy new "Sending Message" message that pops up when you send a message. Go figure!

It shows who you sent messages to on the Today's Accomplishments message, at the bottom under some stars.

There already was an AOSS button on the Internet screen.

You all forgot the fact that the fan now stays on even in Standby mode.

And you forgot the fact that that isn't true.

Probably that means that his Wii is overheating in standby mode like many including mine did.

Okay, I'm hearing reports that USB keyboards now work on the Wii message board.

The Wii now allows you to plug in a USB keyboard and use it on the Message Board, Shop Channel,  or Settings Menu. Interesting tidbit: If you are on the Message Board and switch the entry type from keyboard to keypad and then begin typing on your keyboard, it automatically switches you back to keyboard functionality.

I have a Dell wireless keyboard and mouse set, and the keyboard worked perfectly.

I... don't remember seeing that before, but if you say so...

Also, I'm not sure if it did this before, but the disc slot light now blinks once when you eject a disc while the system is on standby.

They even tell you about it in the manual.

And you're talking to the one who does not read game console instruction manuals, just so you know.

You don't read enclosed instruction books?  For shame. :)

Read the manual. (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=9811.0) It's always useful.

Hey, I never said that I don't read enclosed manuals in general, I just don't read game console manuals. I can usually figure out what I want to do on my own.

Just not how to find the AOSS button.

If nothing else you should at least look at the images in manuals.  Particularly from the Japanese Wii manual.

Manuals aren't as fun as they used to be.  For example, they used to list all of the game's enemies; some had mini strategy guides... now all we get are basic, and usually obvious, control instructions... in three languages.

The three languages part is probably what did it. If manuals were only printed in one language, the game developers would have more pages in which to put information about the game. Either that or the fact that the sale of strategy guides provides more profit for the game companies.

Ugh!  Those strategy guides aren't cheap.  >_<

They're also unnecessary, but I guess that's beside the point.
P.S. Spider-man 3 has probably the most terrible instruction booklet ever. Except maybe some of the latest EA Sports titles.

I think we have a winner.

And a winner can never be someone who uses strategy guides, for those are CHEATERS!
Besides, GameFAQs is free.

I think it's a bit useless to put the manual in three languages even some games (Super Paper Mario, for example) are only playable in one. So you can still know how to play the game yet you're missing out on what exactly is going on.

Here's another thing that I think is new to this firmware. When you download something from the Shop Channel, the Wii displays a warning screen much like the one shown when the console starts up. Now, I don't download too much stuff, so that may have been there before and I just didn't remember it being there.

Well, it looks like a couple people are finally agreeing with me when it comes to the idiocy of trilingual instuction booklets... (I've been wondering... does anyone know if there's a website somewhere where you can get English-only boxarts? I mean, it won't bring back all the info, details and pictures they sacrificed, but still...)

On a different note, is there a rule that only first-party companies can make colored instuction books? Because all non-Nintendo ones are always black-n-white ('cept for this one Sonic game on GC).

I noticed that with Sonic and the Secret Rings...I guess so.

Nah. the Resident Evil 4 manual is in color (both Wii and GC).

I totally agree that trilingual manuals are stupid. English is still the official language in America, right?

The United States of America has no official language.
