I just got one for free, and I don't know what to do with it! I have all the cables and everything, just no games and no controllers. So...what are its strong points? Should I buy some games for it? If so, what games? Is it worth the money? How about controllers? Please try not to post anything if you don't have one, or don't know anything about them.

Halo 2 is a good game. Start there.
-
The best thing that you can do with an X-Box is get it modded.
With a simple chip and hard drive expansion (for a simple fee), you can get it to emulate other systems and load it up with more games than you'll ever play.
...Or something like that. I'm unclear on the details.
-
You can also use it as a media player to play all of your computer's video and music files. If I ever get one, it'll probably be for this and Fifth's reason rather than any of the actual Xbox games.
-
As far as xbox games go though, yeah, Halo 2 and Psychonauts are really the only games I would suggest.
-
Any fighting game you can get your hands on. Specifically, the really rare Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive work too.
-
An original Xbox? Ooh, that's rough. I'd suggest both Halos, Psychonauts, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, and Burnout Revenge.
-
DDR Ultramix 3 has always been one of my favorite mixes. 1 and 2 are horrible, though.
-
Funny... I kind of stopped playing after we got DDR Ultramix 3. I lived off of 1 and 2.
-
How about Counter Strike?
-
We have PCs for that.
-
It's box provides shelter for two for up to three days, and in the event of an emergency, the controllers are edible.
...Oh, games? Yeah, what everyone else said... I'm not an Xbox person.
-
Well, the old Xbox is dead as a doornail, so maybe you could use it as, say, a frisbee. A lethal one.
-
Unless you want to subscribe to Xbox live, you can use it to hold down a LOT of paper.
-
Not like 360 can play most Xbox games.
Although most Xbox games aren't worth playing.
-
I'd say it can play "most" games. Have you looked at the list recently?
-
Why yes, actually. People ask frequently where I work whether such and such game will play on 360. I haven't actually read the whole list in a sitting or anything, though.
-
Well I'm just saying it's a freakin' big list (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm). If you get an Xbox game that is "good" and not just some cartoon show cash-in, odds are high that it'll play (assuming you connect to the internet).
-
How about Counter Strike?
Ugh. After playing on PC, Counter Strike is disgusting on Xbox.
Like I said, Psychonauts is definitely worth keeping your Xbox around for. Unless for some reason, you also have a PS2, and like PS2 more. Then get it for PS2.

I know what X-Boxes are good for... put them in a car compacter!
-
There are about a 100 better things you can do with an X-Box than what you just described.
-

You make the rest of us Nintendo fans look bad.
-
Besides, I'm not sure it would fit.
Wait, Xbox size jokes are still funny, right?
-
I had a dream where I won an X-Box 360 off some gameshow. If that had actually happened to me, I'd want to keep it, but since the only game for it that interests me, so far, is Kameo, I'd just sell it, and save the money for upcoming games, like SSBB, SMG, PBR, and LoZ: Phantom Hourglass.
-
The Xbox has a lot of great games. Trust me, Kameo is not that good.
-
But I haven't really seen any that really interest me, so far.
-

It was just a joke... <<

-
yes, buy star wars battlefront 2,halo 2,destroy all humans 2, and a xbox live card.
-
Psssh. Why get an Xbox Live card when you can get An Xbox Live Card 2?
-
The original Xboxes are great for throwing in front of passing cars, but the 360s are good enough to keep.
But in seriousness, I suggest selling the Xbox on eBay. I doubt you'll make much, being that you only have the console and a controller (right?) and there's no demand for that old hunk of junk, but it's better than letting it take up space in your house.
-
The 360 is awesome, but I've never played on the original.
-
Original Xboxes are good for nothing at this point. If you're strapped for cash and can't afford a 360, then the PS2 has some of the best games of the previous generation.
