Mario Chat / Re: Why is the Mushroom Kingdom dangerous?
« on: December 03, 2022, 11:17:26 AM »
Dangerous machinery and terrain exist in real life too. I'm sure most residents of the Mushroom Kingdom (and probably the broader Mario 'verse by extension) generally don't have such an experience just like those living in modern organized societies don't.

The entire premise of Super Mario Bros. is that Mario is going on a dangerous rescue mission. Bit of selection bias going on when your game camera focuses on the guy facing down all the peril.

I don't know my top five off the top of my head but I can pretty safely say that AM2R is #1.

EV training has always seemed kind of like this awkward mechanic that everyone (including the devs) knows is really tedious and unfun; but at the same time, there's this odd aversion to completely doing away with it or making it more trivial, like somehow everything would be too smooth without it.  Super Training in X/Y was way better than the long grinds I remember from Gen IV, but having my progress come to a complete halt for however long it took to do a couple minigames over and over was still not something I thought of as terribly compelling.

(I haven't played the new ones but from most sources I read it sounds like they've been continuing the proud series tradition of "two steps forward, one step back")

I've always thought the culture at Naughty Dog would be really neat to be a part of, but their process seems to emphasize artwork and graphical development, which are the two facets of game development I find least interesting in practice.  More or less ditto for Insomniac, which is essentially just the opposite side of the same coin.
