I can't believe I just noticed this:

Copper, people, copper! Besides, smell is linked to taste, which is why I know what ladybugs smell like (ever vaccuum one of those suckers?).

He knows what ladybugs smell like because smell is linked to taste. Therefore, he has never smelled a ladybug, but he has eaten one.
