Title: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles
Post by: PaperLuigi on June 25, 2008, 04:03:33 PM
Hiya, it's me with another topic. In any game besides a Mario title, what is your personal best score/rank/whatever? I've been playing MGS3 for a few days now and managed to unlock the Foxhound rank. Has anyone done something like this in another game or an MGS title? Just curious. Now's your chance to brag about your skills.

I didn't think numbers went that high.

I'll try and get some photos of my personal high scores.

You should see Geometry Wars Galaxies high scores.

Geometry Wars is a hard game. I'm so bad at it. Anyway:

(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi261.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii55%2Fbobman37%2FTF2stats.png&hash=33e482453fb991492e23b56bdbbecc94)

Ignore the Most Kills stat, that was during achievement farming. Also ignore the Spy's one-hour lifespan, that was a glitch. All other stats are legitimate.

I accidentally skewed my Medic stats helping other people get Medic achievements on a modded server. It causes me great pain. Unfortunately, I wasn't very careful with my Pyro-related activities, and the same thing happened.
Title: Re: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles
Post by: MaxVance on June 29, 2008, 08:50:19 PM
Doesn't workingplaying specifically to get the achievements defeat the real purpose of them? I know that getting them unlocks new weapons for their respective classes, but overall I think the achievements should be rewards for particularly outstanding or unorthodox play.
Title: Re: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles
Post by: bobman37 on June 30, 2008, 08:49:42 AM
In some cases, achievement farming is necessary to get these new weapons. Sure the Medic achievements seem tame, but back when you had to get all 36 for the Ubersaw so you could charge your uber anytime you melee was insane, especially for achievement such as going on a 20-kill spree while healing a heavy, getting 1000000 heal points, blowing up 5 buildings with a demo's stickies in one uber, etc. For the pyro, wherein Valve got smart and made the achievements actually possible by the average player, a guy can unlock the Backburner and unleash his fiery fury with full pride knowing he did it legit. Plus he doesn't have to do some of the more ridiculous ones like 1000000 fire damage.

But you don't play the game. I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Off the top of my head...getting an eight-digit high score in Tetris DS, defeating Panthera Cantus on Hard in TWEWY, and finishing SPAC3 INVADERS EXTR3ME.

Also, Geometry Wars Galaxies high scores are indeed very insane.

I wish the Tetris Company would change their mind about the infinite spin that bork'd Tetris.  Since Tetris on the NES was made before the new standard I wonder if Nintendo could get them to allow it without changes.
Title: Re: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles

There was a time when The Tetris Company was talking about having their standard set of rules but allowing players to choose their own rules.  I haven't heard anything come of this, but maybe we'll see something in Hudson's upcoming Tetris on WiiWare.

That reminds me, I must get back to playing Mario Kart Wii, I kinda gave up on it because the game is horribly unfair. And it's hard to get star rankings on the cups when you're always getting attacked.

EDIT: And the music sucks compared to older games. there are some good songs like Maple Treeway but jeez...

Oh yeah.

Altogether I'd say the AX cup is easier than the Diamond Cup. Freaking Sand Ocean: Lateral Shift, Aeropolis: Dragon Slope and Phantom Road: Slim-line Slits. And I also hate Big Blue: Drift Highway in the Sapphire Cup. I don't understand why I can't get good at that one.

Just went 15-0 at ranked SSFIITHDR.

The second-to-last victory was the sweetest. It was an ultra-trash-talking Sagat. He did take me to Round 5, but I pulled through. The first round I won, he screamed that I threw too much. The second, he howled that I fireballed too much. The third, he yelled that I punched too much.

Gamer Points have absolutely no standardization and the number is meaningless. No one needs to feel compelled to beat this number because it is a tool used to get you to want to buy games and has no actual standard value associated with it.

Edit: I just noticed the 1337, but what I said is still true!!!!!

Arcade-o-mania, after a week on a Multicade with free play:

1942 (3-life, 20K bonus): 72,890 points, level 7.
Galaga (5-life, 20K bonus): 89,750 points, level 13.
Dig Dug (3-life, no bonus): 109,300 points, level 15.
Dig Dug II (3-life, 30, 80K bonuses): 131,100 points, level 13.
Super Pac-Man (3-life, 30, 100K bonuses): 133,000 points, level 14.
Ms. Pac-Man (5-life, fast mode, no bonus): 140,500 points, level 15.

I'm really upset I couldn't get just two more clovers in SPM level 14, as level 15 is a bonus and easy 20K points.

BLUE WISH RESURRECTION PLUS replay save. (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=b3d04f75792ba759dd8b33b5aa27078d) (Just throw the file into the game's replay folder.) In it, I play through to stage five (original difficulty, enemy bullet acceleration on) before wasting bombs and lives left and right. Still my best accel run, though, and my second-best run overall (behind the one where I finished the game with accel off).

Earlier today I platinum'd God of War III. I played through it three times straight almost without touching any other games. It's very rare for me to dedicate myself passionately to a single-player game like that; usually I get ripped away by other games before even beating a title once. But periodically something does click and I enter the unbroken play/replay/replay lovemaking cycle (Metroid Prime, Viewtiful Joe, Metroid Zero Mission, God of War)

Summary of what LD and TEM said: All of the God of War games are good, but God of War III was my least favorite of the series.

In response to BP mastering F-Zero GX, two things.

One: (https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nma-fallout.com%2Fforum%2Fimages%2Fsmiles%2Fnotworthy.gif&hash=4aa6c87992a4b73381f3bc3ab10d8a4e)

Two: I HATED trying to beat the Diamond Cup on Expert. I still haven't managed it (I was under the impression if I did that, I didn't need to do it under the previous difficulties. Screw 'em). Sand Ocean: Lateral Shift is the one I always kept dying on. No matter how much I know that one turn's coming up, I always fail to turn early enough. I also had trouble with Trident because I was going so fast (to barely keep ahead of everybody else) that one little twitch too far to the left or right would have sent me flying into oblivion. I don't recall having too much trouble with Aeropolis: Dragon Slope (I haven't played it in forever though), but I love Aeropolis in the first place, so maybe that's just me. As for Phantom Road: Slim-line Slits, I never played that enough to understand what the fuss was about, but I imagine if 30 cars are trying to squeeze through a 1-car-wide road at once, that would kill you in seconds. The track I hate the most, however, is Big Blue: Ordeal of the Emerald Cup. That's the track I always struggle to place well on no matter how good I do.

And I'm not convinced that creating custom machines will help diddly. To get stats comparable to a premade machine, the custom machine always seems much heavier. Plus, I really wish I knew the algorithms behind what stats are given for different combinations of parts. It's been a dream of mine to create a program that lets you select parts and see their stats, then derive from that what parts you'd need to get the stats you desire, and showing what parts of the game you have to beat to make that happen. But NOBODY knows how the game figures that out. Come on, it can't be that difficult can it?

...Oh yeah. My best on Winter Bells from the Orisinal website:

Sucks that I can't really do that with any other game I have except BioShock and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions 'cause everything else has online achievements.

Online achievements. How I loathe them. Especially when there're like two of them. And one of them is basically "Have Internet that's good enough for you to go online." What's up with that.

A buddy and I recently did what I call a Leech Run of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. We only used X-Men characters, and left one space open, as though Leech was on he team, so no powers. While we couldn't stop the computer from using powers, we never added points to any skills, so it was only the weakest of the first attack. Colossus and Wolverine were the easy ones, but Storm and Iceman were tougher, and Nightcrawler was pretty much useless. We were aiming forno deaths, but Nightcrawler died almost immediatley. So we decided that the third could die, but we had to stick to characters between extraction points. We die and we lose. So after a while we would just set the third to aggressive to get most mobs, and pick them off before they died. Block become invaluable, and you learn how bad the roll dodge is set up. But overall, not bad.

Well, I wouldn't consider this a "best," but I have done quite a bit with glitches in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In the first three pictures you can see all the items I've managed to get as a kid alone. Proof of this is in the third picture, where you can see that I don't even have the Light Medallion, which you get immediately when you turn into an adult, yet. That last picture shows me in the same file, except I obtained the Longshot (which was the biggest pain to get without the Hookshot). Note that no cheats were used at all; just glitches.

Title: Re: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles

*Prepares to type a long post*

Let's start with how I got out of the forest without the Kokiri Sword. I hope some of you have seen that forest escape involving the Business Scrub in the Lost Woods. If you haven't, don't worry; I didn't use that anyway. What I did was get Deku Nuts and make my way to the little hole you climb through to get to the Kokiri Sword. Due to some programming oversight, you're able to move if you use an item after opening up a textbox right after you get out of a hole like that. What I did in that instance was talk to Navi and use a Deku Nut, enabling me to move. Then, I had to blindly make my way to the exit; since the Kokiri was no longer blocking the exit since the textbox was still up, I was able to get out of the forest.

Now onto the more important glitches:

Infinite Sword Glitch: This is perhaps the most important of all the glitches I used. If you're near something you can pick up or open a textbox with (sign, billboard, person, bomb), crouch stab and try to press A to interact with the respective object mid-swing. If done correctly, Link's sword will have the slash mark that you see when you attack at all times, the vertical bars at the top and bottom of the screen won't go away, and you won't be able to fall off any ledges. It's called "Infinite Sword" because Link is in a constant attacking state (if you run near an enemy you can hurt it without swinging). This glitch is required for...

Bomb/Bombchu Hovering: This glitch enables you to reach places previously thought unreachable in certain circumstances (Forest Temple as kid). The easiest way to do this is face your back to a ledge with the Infinite Sword Glitch activated while holding Z. Then, take out your Slingshot/Fairy Bow, ready a Deku Seed/Arrow, backflip, and quickly pull out a Bombchu and shield with R. Link will block the explosion with his shield, and since the Infinite Sword Glitch doesn't allow him to fall, he'll stay in place. Note that there are better ways to do this and gain more height and distance with each Bombchu, but this is just the simplest and easiest way. Also note that this does not work on slippery slopes (more on this later).

Megaflip: This glitch enables you to do a backflip four times farther than your normal one. There's an easy way and a hard way: The easy way to do this is activate Nayru's Love. Then, take out a Bomb, stay a little in front of it so it doesn't say "Grab" on A, hold Z and R, and wait for it to blow up. Right when the explosion hits Link's shield, backflip (still holding Z and R). The harder way to do this is the same as above, except you don't need Nayru's Love and must instead roll into the explosion then backflip.

There are many more glitches I used, but it would take a long time to explain them all. If you want to find out more, head on over to: www.zeldaspeedruns.com

As for the Longshot, one of the rooms you need to get to Dark Link has two slippery slopes, which poses a problem for the Bombchu Hover glitch because you can't backflip when hovering above one. Luckily, you can use the moving platforms in the room to hover normally. The problem is, if you happen to backflip and be above a slippery slope, Link will do a farther backflip, requiring you to start over. Additionally, it gets harder to keep track of whether you're above a platform or not since Link's shadow disappears when you're really high up. Since the room is so big, it takes about 45-50 Bombchus to make it across. A difficult task indeed.

That's crazy man. You crazy.

But why did you need to get out of the forest without a sword if you were trying to get everything possible without becoming adult Link? I see you have the Kokiri's Emerald, anyhow.

Post by: Kimimaru on March 22, 2011, 12:18:28 PM
Oh, I never mentioned that. At first I was just doing another typical swordless run, but then I decided to get all I can without a sword as well. I have the Kokiri's Emerald because if you get Zelda's Letter before getting a sword, Mido won't be blocking your way to the Deku Tree anymore.

It's funny because Dark Link and the double Stalfos mid-boss are easier to beat as a kid swordless than as an adult swordless. You have Deku Sticks as a kid, which when used in a jumpslash are as strong as the Master Sword. You don't have those as an adult. Also, the Boomerang freezes Dark Link, making it basically impossible to lose against him.

I'm currently in the middle of a Squirt Nozzle-less Super Mario Sunshine run. You wouldn't believe how annoying it was to take down Shadow Mario in Gelato Beach with just the Turbo Nozzle.

Sorry for the double post, but I've found a way to shoot a little water a significant distance forwards or backwards with the Hover Nozzle. By using that technique, I managed to get rid of one obstacle in my run: flipping all the ? panels in the Hotel Delfino Casino. It took about an hour, but I think it was well worth it.

Well, I managed to do something cool! Check this out:

(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi300.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn38%2FKimimaru4000%2FSuperMarioSunshine-SirenaBeachEarly.jpg&hash=a9119a70f11c5f03a021c4b0680d5e83)

I got in Sirena Beach without eating the pineapple on top of the pipe! I used Yoshi to do this, but it'd be great if I found a way to get in with only Mario.
Title: Re: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles
Post by: Turtlekid1 on April 16, 2011, 08:04:32 PM
Would it have any applications in speed running?

Even if not, though, it's a neat trick.
Title: Re: Personal Bests on non-Mario titles
Post by: Kimimaru on April 16, 2011, 08:45:23 PM
I doubt it would, unfortunately. If the pineapple disappeared after completing the first Episode and I found a way to get in with just Mario, I can save some time and complete a few Episodes in Sirena Beach before getting Yoshi. However, I think this is suitable for a "low%" run, where the objective is to complete the game by doing the bare minimum.

Besides, I don't think either of us wants to speed-run through this game again. It's really not that fun scrolling through the mountains of unskippable text it sends at you.

I forgot. Is Kuromatsu the old Metal_Slug_Mario? Because I thought for a second there we were talking about Kimimaru, who, if I'm not mistaken, is the one who's godly at some games.

My confusion led to my surprise when Kuro admitted being bad (or as he put it "second rate) at games, but then I remembered Kimimaru is the pro one, so it's all good.

Anyway, those speedrun screenshots remound me of when myself and Koopaslaya went on into Mini Putt score-beating frenzy that ended me with getting an unfathomably low (good) score and subsequently caused Koopaslaya to disappear off the face of the Internet.

Then for COM Knockout mode (kill COM players 1 thru 10 back to back), I'm 16th fastest in the world, and the fastest in North America.

Currently, I'm working on trying to get maybe 6th or 7th place in Sprint mode because I just need to shave a second off to be in that position. 46 seconds for 40 lines... you can't understand how fast it is unless you see it. That's where my problem lies. Typically if I screw one up I'll instantly restart. If I'm really flying, I can fill the matrix up to the point of almost maxing out in around 15 seconds, then I just combo the crap out of it and just do whatever. I always reserve the first line and keep it around until it's needed.

Like I said, video and photos of that will come soon. Just, at the moment I'm busy taking care of stuff I need to do.

I can't really take a screenshot that would prove it, but, I successfully completed the Majora's Mask Three-Day Challenge. In which you have to beat the game without ever playing the Song of Time after the first time. You can technically save and reload if you save at an owl statue and copy the file.

Other than having to complete the dungeons very fast, you can't get Epona any later than 6PM on the first day. So in those first twelve game hours you have to get into Woodfall Temple, get the bow, warp out, get into Snowhead Temple, get fire arrows, warp out, melt the ice blocking Medigoron's powder keg shop, blow open the way to the Goron racetrack, run back to him and get a powder keg you can take to open Romani Ranch. Which is a hell of a lot to do and requires near-perfection. The rest isn't quite as demanding. I ended up with a bit of time left over after saving Odolwa for last and used it to get more heart pieces. I had ten containers at the end. I didn't get the Bunny Hood, I mostly spun around as a Deku or rolled around as a Goron to go fast (which, to do this, you gotta). The only non-critical mask I picked up was the Stone Mask, which may as well be a critical one. I've never gone into the Pirate's Fortress without it, and quite a few rooms in Great Bay Temple and Stone Tower Temple have obnoxious respawning enemies who make life hell if you don't have it.

Biggest mistake: I forgot to go get the Song of Storms on the first night, even though I remembered to go get the Captain's Hat for that purpose. The Stalchildren are circling different graves on the second and third nights. But thankfully, it is actually possible to get into Sharp's grave on the second night without any glitches, seen here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-4W_geTq5A).

This is still very true.

I'm so bad at it.

This is no longer true. In each of the 6 game modes of Geometry Wars 2, I own the highest score known to man. Suck it RedSix66! (And Lizard Dude)

I like that fully half of those top scores belong to Fungi Forums members.

Since he's looking at the friends leaderboards, yeah, that's how it works.

I should put more time into Geometry Wars 2 someday.

Well, that makes it significantly less exciting.

I've topped 1600 on Star Fox 64 a few times. Not sure if this is a really good record or not, but it seems to be a pretty elusive mark for a lot of guys. I'm pretty sure my current mark is 1657 or thereabouts; I set it last March.

I tend to play the game really well after an awful day at work, so the next time my clients get unruly, I'll play again and see if I can beat that score. I do want to top 1700 at some point.

Also, if it counts for anything, back in fourth grade, I got to level 69 on Number Munchers. Anyone remember that game where you were the little frog-like guy and had to munch factors, multiples, primes, and the like?

This is my new best Dead Rising Infinity Mode time, beating my old one which was around 9 days (the power went out).

Infinity Mode is Dead Rising 1's bonus mode that doesn't appear in any other game in the series. It's a survival mode where your health constantly ticks down, and Frank dies after 4 game hours (20 real minutes) without food. Bosses appear multiple times in places where they normally don't, all survivors are hostile, and both drop food when killed. The living stop appearing at the end of the 7th day. There is food scattered around the mall, but it does not respawn when picked up and there are no infinite sources of it.

All of this considered, it is not possible to survive longer than 17 days, 7 hours and a few minutes (game time), which requires a very specific way of dealing with the very last survivors. Surviving 5 days is incentivized with an achievement and a real Laser Sword weapon, and surviving 7 days is incentivized with another achievement and Arthur's boxers from Ghouls 'n Ghosts to wear. Surviving longer than 7 days is not incentivized by anything besides the leaderboards. And you can't save at all, the mode must be played in one go with only the pause screen for breaks, hence a power outage cutting my last attempt short.
