Mario Chat / Were the Goombas Toads before they joined Bowser?
« on: August 09, 2022, 06:31:41 PM »
The manual for Super Mario Bros. 1 describes them as “a mushroom who betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom”. Does this mean they were once Toads?

2
The coin collection sound we all know originates here, Mario dresses in the same colors as today, and the pipes are true green for the first time (they were yelloe-green in the arcade version).

4
Is the variation in whether the island is tiny or huge, or is the variation in whether Mario is tiny or huge? Or perhaps both Mario and the island change sizes?

5
They differed when it came to some of the text. "Miss twice and your out" waw changed to "You can only miss twice" and the world names were changed to "X Land". If the reason for the second version was that "your" should have been "you're", it doesn't explain why the world names were changed or why Super Mario All-Stars went back to the old text. I think the first version's world names are much cooler.

6
The other colors have switches. Was yellow going to have a switch during development?

7
Why does he want it to attack them?

8
I ask because this is where the name, "Bowser" was created.

Mario Chat / Is lava the natural habitat of the Koopa species?
« on: February 07, 2018, 10:21:09 AM »
Bowser always seems to be surrounded by lava. Is this the natural habitat of the Koopa species, Bowser's personal preference, or a security system?

In Super Mario 64, there's paintings that you jump into to go to various locations. Were these paintings always there, or did Bowser use the Power Stars to create them?

Mario Chat / Who were Bowser's parents?

Who were they? Were they King and Queen of the Koopa Empire? Were they hell-bent on annexing the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnapping Mushroom royalty like Bowser is?

Headcanon: Donkey Kong (1981) and Mario Bros. (1983) take place in New Donk City. As mayor, Pauline held Donkey Kong captive in New Donk City Zoo. At some point, Donkey Kong broke out of captivity and turned the tables on Pauline. Mario, boyfriend of Pauline, saved the day. Sometime afterwards, Mario and Pauline had broken up and the sewers were infested by turtles, crabs, and flies. Mario and his brother Luigi, being plumbers, went to work clearing out the sewers, where they found that the creatures were coming from the Mushroom Kingdom. Then Super Mario Bros. 1 happened.

Mario Chat / Re: What are the Koopas/the Koopa called in Japan?

No, that part of the manual calls him 大魔王クッパ Great Demon King Koopa

That's interesting. I wonder if the same is true in subsequent games. You might also find it interesting that "Great Demon King" is also Ganon(dorf)'s title in the Japanese version of the Zelda games.

ノコノコ

Noko Noko

"noh-koh-noh-koh"

It means unconcernedly or nonchalantly.

There's a few instances where you can see this Japanese name slipping through the localization cracks. Super Mario RPG has the NokNok Shell weapon. The strangely unlocalized enemy names of Super Mario Land include Nokobon (as in bomb-Koopa) and then Super Mario Land 2 got the Noko Bombette, which even throws in the Japanese name for Buzzy Beetle, Metto (from helmet, "herumetto")!
I know that Koopa Troopas are called Noko Nokos, but is Bowser called "King of the Noko Nokos"?
