Video Game Chat / Re: What's the worst videogame you've ever played?
« on: October 12, 2008, 01:05:43 PM »
The last two pages seem to be a debate about something or another, but I'll comment on the original topic:

Two games: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and Sonic 2006.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was a sidescroller for the NES that was actually based on the Saturday morning cartoon and less so than on the movie. The collision detection is the worst I've seen in a 2D game. Most of the enemies are round and tomatoes shaped but half of the time you try to jump on them the game decides that the Tomatoe hurt you, as opposed to you hurting the tomato. Which means that trying to attack your enemies is often a fast ticket to death and it makes it seem like it's better to just run...But they hop around, and turn direction, and some of them chase you. Urgh. I'm always amazed that this doesn't get brought up more often in 'terrible game' polls...I guess that most people are fortunate enough not to have experienced it.

As a kid I was very easy to please. I still am; really. It's hard to make me hate something. But I hated that game as a kid. I ended up selling it at a garage sale my family and my babysitter's was involved in. I had put $5.00 as the price tag on it but the only kid who was interested said he only had $3.00 on him, so I let him have it for that. That's also the only game I've ever sold so far.

Sonic 2006...Is probably worse than Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. AotKT, though, is only like five levels long, or so I got the impression. I only got to level three once or twice. But Sonic 2006 is a long game made even longer by horrendous load times. The depth to which things are faulty or glitchy is just amazing...I honestly think that Sonic2k6 should be studied by serious game developers so that they can avoid the pitfalls in their own projects. Some people just give up on the game a level or two in but if you keep going you find out that it just keeps getting worse and worse. *jibblie jibblie*

General Chat / Re: Fanfiction
« on: July 14, 2008, 12:51:33 AM »
I think that FanFiction is a nice enough thing.. It basically does these two things:

1) Allows a person to interact with characters/series in a way other than watching/playing them.
2) Is a way for a group of people to be connected to each other.

It's true that Fan Fiction is often times really poor in a technical sense but I think that's to be expected. It's not Professional Fiction, licensed by the company itself -- Such as novels based off of Resident Evil and Halo or Star Trek. It's just written by people who love what they're writing about on their own time and for free. I think it also keeps a person writing and continually developing their skills. If you don't keep writing you're sunk. (Another good way is through blogging.) You can usually figure out the quality of a story pretty quickly by looking at how good their grammar is and if the ideas being presented are original or interesting in their little synopsis.

I quite enjoyed Fanfiction in my earlier days but I don't really have the time for it anymore. .When I do have time for creative endeavors I usually try to do my own original stuff.

Mario Chat / Re: American Mario cartoons in Japan?
« on: May 23, 2008, 11:00:54 PM »
Once on Youtube I saw a clip from a dub of the Mario 3 Cartoon from Brazil. I don't think I can find the link offhand though.

EDIT: Whoa! I can. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=H-0W8YiCRwY&NR=1
It might just be a Spanish Dub. You get to see all of the main character's voices, though. Also note how they didn't try to redo the song in English.

And I'm well-aware someone is going to fix this very post. You're obnoxious.

Mario Chat / Re: BEST AND WORST IN SERIES? Week 14: Hub Dwellers

Best: The residents of Rogueport from PM:TTYD. They're so evil and seedy...in a G-rated, happy Disney sort of way.

Worst: I don't really know what to say for worst.

I ran into NintendoExpert again yesterday. We got to do some battle mode stuff. Also, early last week I'm pretty certain I raced Luigison for a little bit.

If I had to choose one, I'd probably choose "Dream Operator" by the Talking Heads. That song has always resonated with me.

Mario Chat / Re: BEST AND WORST IN SERIES? Week 13: HUB
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:55:06 PM »
BEST: At the time I would say Mario 64, because that castle really felt mysterious and magical. Since Hub levels have become so common the Castle seems almost bland, now that a decade has passed. So I'll say Sunshine, because Isle Delfino is still has that inviting bustling atmosphere.

WORST: Paper Mario's Toad Town. It seemed dull to me.

Not at the Dinner Table / Re: Ouija boards

I've read before a theory put out that when the mover thing is moving, what's happening is that you and your friends have subconscious body motions. You're not consciously moving it, but subconsciously push it just a little. In that sense, all of the messages come from your own head. So if you think ask the 'spirit' if it wants to hurt you, the answer reflects what you and your friends think -- if you're both really scared of it the mover might point to yes.

However, it really freaks some people out. Spiritualists always warn about how you can get possessed or release a ghost/spirit into your house or even a poltergeist. I was surprised. Once I told my dad that I thought it would be fun to get one and he got really freaked out like I hadn't seen before. The same guy that taught me not to be afraid of monsters and stuff. Weird.

I figure you should probably just skip it. That way, if it's real, you don't get any kind of bad consequence, and if it's fake, you didn't waste your time. On a side note, Did you know that Parker Brothers makes and sells Ouija Boards? Their slogan is something like "It's just a game...right?"

I think both people have to be online at the same time before you can see each other's icons. That's the way it's worked for me, anyway.

Haha! I got to race with somebody named 'Thomas'. I checked the friend codes and I think it's NintendoExpert. Man, I was doing terrible with Koopa Troopa. I always used to choose him in the first SMK but I think i'm going to have to leave him in favor of Boo King.
