Title: SSBB: Mario's special moves
Post by: Deezer on September 06, 2007, 11:05:44 AM

Mario and FLUDD will reunite in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/games/ssbb). Serving as Mario's new down special move, FLUDD shoots out water that pushes opponents back. The spray does no damage, but it can be charged up with the B button.

The fact that it doesn't do damage, makes it feel a bit gimicky.

I guess if you charge it up enough, we might be able to knock opponents with high damage percentage out of the arena.  If that's the case, it won't be all that useless.

Well.... so far Samus and Link have been given bit drastic changes, but I didn't expect Mario to break tradition. I wonder what they've cooked up for Kirby, Pikachu, DK and the rest...

I'd like to see a gameplay video of just how quickly it pushes. I also wonder if it will be aimable like the projectile items.

It would definitely be useful in annoying your friends as they try to jump back onto the stage.

New strategies for Mario, I guess.

Note: I can't go on as much now because of certain reasons...

I guess this could mean the Poltergust for Luigi...

FLUDD? Woot, and all, but I think it would've been even cooler as an item. But the Mario Tornado still there?!? Quit toying with us, Sakurai!

Considering we've already seen characters that can lose/destroy their own special moves (Diddy rocket, Wario motorcycle, etc.), I think they must revert to a secondary special after they lose their first.

They didn't give me a secondary up-special when Nana died!! :<

I'm going to jump to conclusion and say "Thanks for ruining Mario, Sora." This is the first thing that makes me think this game may not be a Melee 2 like I want, but well see.

Of course it isn't going to be a Melee 2. It's going to be SSBB. This means things are going to be different.

If you ask me, this warrants not even comparing this game to Melee anymore. It's more of an alternate sequel in that it expands on different concepts from SSB64 than Melee did.

What he means that people shouldn't compare Brawl to Melee. Because it'll dumb like comparing Sunshine to SM64

Sunshine needs to be ignored...
I played it again recently and realized... It's just for show. I have the game for nostalgia and to occupy shelf space.
-Potentially great, yet ruined plot (also, no right to an attorney on Isle Delfino or what? Mario had an alibi harder than Peach's head)
-Potentially fun levels... but hover nozzle makes it way too easy
-Potentially "Oh yes, that was a cool one" bosses, ruined by reappearances in later games
-Yoshi was done wrong (time constraints!? That's NOT the Miyamoto we know and love)
-Blue coins = the most tedious thing you'll ever, EVER have to do in a Mario game
-An appallingly easy final boss battle
What did I see in it when I was 10... What do Nintendo's staff members see in it now...?

Did someone actually say that Yoshi was time restrained or do people just keep making that up?

Yes, blue coins are horrible, but you can't hold future games against an old game and you can't complain about easy Mario bosses (every Mario boss ever, except maybe SM64 final Bowser if you're a n00b).

If Yoshi isn't so screwy due to time, that's even worse. But you have a point with boss difficulty...

Yoshi definitely has a time limit. His juice level keeps dropping even if you never use any.

Not only that, but it seems to me that Yoshi is a bit.. glitchy in the juice area (for lack of a better word): I've stood perfectly still before, and Yoshi's juice gauge will randomly jump from being half-full to near the top, and back down to about where it was (I think it was most notable on purple Yoshi, but I could be wrong).

I don't know if that's just what it did normally when Yoshi was running low on juice or if I just never noticed, but it stuck me as odd.

I pretty much hate playing as Yoshi in SMS, but at least they put him in the game.

Oh, and what's with the Melee 2 debate here? Technically, games like the Smash Bros. series don't even have sequels; they're more like expansions upon the last game. Like... Mario Party (but better). I think Brawl will be accepted as better by most, but hey, different strokes.

Yoshi is very glitchy in general, along with a lot of other parts of the game but I still love Mario Sunshine.
Brawl isn't Melee 2, it's SSB 3. What the heck?

It's because all the pr0s are whining about their precious game being changed.

I think Sunshine had some good ideas in it. I like some of the enemies, especially the Cataquacks. I'm one of the few Sunshine supporters, it looks like.

I thought that SMS was worthwhile also. It is one of my favorite GC titles.

Funnily enough, the Cataquacks were my least favorite enemies in the whole game. In fact, they're the only fictional character I've ever truly despised.

Pretty sure everyone here's played Sunshine. Not so much complaining about SSBB as wishing elements from Sunshine weren't so persistent...

The point isn't about Mario Sunshine. It's that people are complaining about a game that isn't even out yet saying "this is not a worthy successor to Melee" just because of an added gimmick. I believe Melee had its own share of gimmicks, why not actually try out the ones in Brawl before instead of being close-minded and expecting the worst?

Ugh, it's not a gimmick, Mario's moves are just changing a little.  Like when they changed his moves for melee from the original.  It's not like the whole game is going to be advertised around and because of this one attack.

When was I complaining? I didn't say it wasn't a worthy successor. I just said it was different. That's all. I only meant that I'd prefer not to use Melee as a template for Brawl's standards. I'd rather let Brawl stand on it's own merit, since it'll likely be awesome regardless.

Saying that one change "warrants not even comparing this game to Melee anymore" sounds awfully complaining-ish. What Metric said, however, is completly invalid since he has not played Brawl and does not know how Mario will work in it.

I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining. Wrong choice of words. That, and the addition of FLUDD as Mario's weapon isn't the only thing that made me say that, which I failed to mention earlier.
