Title: BEST IN SERIES? Week 9: Intro
Post by: Nintendoobsessed on March 30, 2008, 12:15:01 PM
An intro to any game can be important. Needless to say, the Mario series has had some great intros.  This includes cutscenes/first levels. So...

Super Mario Galaxy (1)

The intro really got me going into a more complex storyline that could come from the Mario series.

Winners:
WEEK 1(Attacks): Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
WEEK 2(Final Boss Battle): Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
WEEK 3(Music): Super Mario Galaxy
WEEK 4(Underwater Levels): Super Mario World
WEEK 5(Powerups): Super Mario Bros 3
WEEK 6(Bowser Level):Paper Mario
WEEK 7(First Boss): Super Mario 64
WEEK 8(Yoshi's Role): Yoshi's Island

Super Mario Galaxy had an awesome intro. Beautiful scenery not previously seen in most Mario games.

I vote for Super Mario Galaxy.

I'll be old-fashioned and say Super Mario RPG because it does a good job making you want to play the game.

I agree with the bird person, Super Mario RPG, that was an impressive demo. Too bad you didn't really fight the Magikoopa in the Forest Maze. And seeing Mario referred to as "Super Mario" still strikes me as weird, considering the incarnation of Mario we see most of the time these days is his Super self.

Honorable mention goes to the demo when doing Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels from Super Mario All-Stars. The music seemed sad, so unlike the Mario series. Probably fits since Mario got killed by a poison mushroom in the intro. That demo made me think I'd be dodging poison mushrooms through the entire game, or that even if I save the Princess I will still die from a poison mushroom at the end. I just never expect demos to show the player losing.

Super Mario Bros. 3
I always loved how all the items and such fell and Luigi and Mario threw shells at each other.

Well penguinwizard, I think SMRPG was the first game where he was permanently "Super".

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Nothing can stand up against its music. :)

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Again it seems this series is made to show the best of each of the best/major titles.  Eventually we'll have dupes unless we start having weeks like Best in Series Week 27: Game with Hotel in the Title?

Uhh... tied with SMB3 and SMRPG..... I can't choose! PM is up there too with the music and good parts of the game shown (Without showing too much)

SMRPG, but Galaxy is a close second (then again, I feel like there should be a line between Start Menu montage and plot-related obligatory cutscene), however confusing some of it may be.

Also, I guess SSBM doesn't count, but that one's still awesome.

Hmm.. I think I have a 3-Way tie.. All 3 of the 3D Mario games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.

I know all Mario 64 did was show us a cryptic letter about the Princess inviting Mario to the castle for some cake, but I want to know how many people jumped (literally jumped) when you walked into the castle, only to hear Bowser's evil cackle coming from the walls. Eerie!.. Otherwise, it set the game up well, and even had throw backs to the 2D games (letters from the Princess, items from Toad, cake XD

Mario Sunshine had a good intro, setting up the story even better than Mario 64 did. The in-flight movie showing a very Mario-esque character ruining the Island. The only gripe that I have with this game (aside from the fact that it wasn't a very good Mario game) is that if anybody had just listened to the princess, her capture in this game could have been prevented.

The intro to Mario Galaxy is awesome. It ties together many of the themes from previous Mario games and sets up the story extremely well, making you want to play the game so that you can find out more. It even shows what happens when Bowser invades the Kingdom. The only complaint I have about this one (a minor complaint) is: How did Bowser get aliens to side with him? There are several alien ships present at the time the Princess (and the castle) were captured.

If I have to pick just one, it would be the Galaxy intro, with Sunshine and 64 falling into second and third, respectivley. But honestly, I had a hard time picking just from the 3 as so many Mario games have good intros (or games that feature Mario, like the SSB series).

I know all Mario 64 did was show us a cryptic letter about the Princess inviting Mario to the castle for some cake
That's actually what I liked about it: It gives you a little story and builds up your anticipation, but it doesn't drag on for too long like most games that came after it.  When I press "Start Game", I expect to be actually playing the game pretty soon, not watching a stupid 5-minute movie!  So that's why I'm picking Super Mario 64 for now.  (By the way, I still disagree that Mario was his full Super size in that game, but I'll save it for later...)

I also liked Super Mario Bros. 2 USA's intro for its colorful title screen (a shame they got rid of the blue background later), its happy music inspired by the water level theme, and actually giving you the story in-game for once rather than forcing you to find the manual to learn it, despite leaving out the other three characters.  Super Mario Bros. 3 was also great for doing some funny stuff with its game characters on the title screen.

I dunno, I think dying is a neat way to wrap up a demo that can't show the entire level.  After all, Mario also died in the Super Mario Bros. 1 demo, except when the controls desynched and he just walked against a pipe at the end without ever getting hurt...

New Super Mario Bros!! No, just kidding.

I vote for Super Mario Galaxy. That intro is the most epic and dramatic intro ever seen in any Mario game.

I rather liked SM64's intro as well. Unlike Super Mario Galaxy, it was quick and without any unnecessary frills. The premise was simple but believable. NSMB was quick and without unnecessary frills, but the premise was moronic. "Look, Mario, a diversion!"

I thought the premise of SM64 was moronic, not that it really affected the game.

Eh, but isn't it neat to discover that the princess is missing, rather than being told flat out?

...Well, I guess you do get told when you enter the first door, but wasn't it neat that you were totally unaware for those first several yards leading up to the castle?

I vote Super Mario Sunshine, because it makes you:
a: want to explore those tropical places
b: feel intrigued about shadow mario
c: ?

I think super mario sunshine is better than galaxy or 64 because of the whole hawaii-esque theme and great deals of exploration
