Title: Mario video requests - Temporarily closed...
Post by: jdaster64 on January 06, 2009, 10:18:40 AM
I'll attempt to work on any request from the following games:

Super Mario Bros. (8 or 16-bit)
Super Mario Bros. 2(J) (8 or 16-bit)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (8 or 16-bit)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (8 or 16-bit)
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Paper Mario
Mario & Luigi: SS
EDIT: Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Paper Mario & M&L:SS may depend on convenience, and all depend slightly on skill.

I should be able to handle about anything from SMB, SMB2(j), SMB3, or SMW, though.

I record to VHS to DVD to my computer, or simply to DVD to my computer; give me about 5-7 days to put up the video (possibly longer for M&L and Paper Mario).

Videos so far:

Super Mario World - Tubular w/o Cape or P-Balloon, and other minimal powerup runs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37e_9xcUlnk
Super Mario World - Donut Secret 2 Extra Starman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr8AJdJeSSM&feature=channel
Super Mario World - Anti-Gravity Yoshi Glitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz29985EwRs&feature=channel
Paper Mario - Anti Guys Unit 5 HP, no Life Shrooms - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2TI8r6RRPw&feature=channel_page

I've been looking for Luigi in Super Mario 64. Can you post a video of that for me, please?

MushroomJunkie is back?

As for a request, I believe you said it is possible do Tubular in SMW without a balloon or cape...

Bue Yoshi, or rather Blue Yoshi (I'm at work and the backspace key doesn't..)

Working on a video of that, should be up by the weekend.

I ask Kimimaru this, but I also challenge you to this as well:
Complete Super Mario World as a tiny, powerless, yoshi-less Mario. With no color block switches...in less than 2 hours.
I'll think of some more requests later.

Likely possible, but time-consuming.

Also, I'm encountering a glitch with HyperCam, and am going to try another method of video editing. If all works correctly, it should still be up this weekend. Otherwise, I'll have to scrap the whole requests deal. Sorry... :(

How about you beat Super Mario Bros. with Luigi.

You can always try using CamStudio. HyperCam slows down my computer for some reason, but CamStudio works great and I find it very easy to use.

I figured out the problem... someone turned the sound recording off and set the frame rate to 5 (???!), so it should be working again. I'll try to upload it to Youtube tomorrow night...

Also, @FBMardio, beating SMW powerupless is possible, but not Yoshiless or switchless, as you'll need both to get to the Star Road (otherwise you'd have to get a Super Mushroom in Forest of Illusion 3 to get to Roy's Castle)

@Glitchy - I might do sometime next week, depending on schedule...

I know and sorry about that request. I know realize it's impossible and have decided to drop the request. But! I have a new one for you and anybody else that's willing to try: Beat SMB.3 in less than 14 minutes. You may use any item you want and you can skip levels too. It takes nearly 25 minutes to beat SMB.3 with two whistles and knowing how to navigate through the world 8 fortress. In order to beat the game in under 14 minutes, you'll have to obtain the 28 P-Wings you get after beating the game. After you watch the credits,  start a new game with the 28 P-Wings. Head to w1-3, duck while on the white block, run behind the black screen and get the first whistle. Head to the first fortress, stomp drybones as Raccoon Mario and fly above the ceiling on the right. Keep going until you run into a wall. Stay there and press the up button to enter a secret room to the second whistle. And keep using those P-Wings once you get to world 8.

@FBM: Hmm, I might just try that.

@Glitchy: Honestly, I was hoping for something more interesting, so I think I'll try FBM's request first.

I'm uploading the Super Mario World video tonight and will post a link some time tomorrow morning.

EDIT: Here it is, with a couple of bonus videos:

Bleh, I finished recording FlamingBlueMardio's request (sort of). After one try, I cleared from 1-1 to the end door in roughly 13:15.
However, the graphics glitched all the way through; at 7:00 or so to the point I couldn't tell the pipes from the background.

I could put it on Youtube to prove it, but I don't want it getting bad ratings or getting removed because of the poor quality...

Also, whenever I post the next video, I'm also going to put up a video I have tucked away somewhere of beating the Anti Guys Unit in three turns, at level 18, with 5 HP.

For the minimal powerups run, at 2:16, you called the level "Chocolate Island 3" when it was actually "Star World 5."  But they were all nicely done, especially Tubular and Cheese Bridge Area.  I had no idea about the anti-gravity Yoshi.  Good job!

Unfortunatly, my PC is having problems and I can't view your videos right now but I'm sure they're great. :) And also, thanks for taking my request for SMB.3. My fastest time was 14:11.

Whoops... I was rushing a bit too fast through the title additions apparently...

I still plan to post it on Youtube, just FYI.  Also, I forgot to mention it, but I went into the door to the Princess at around 13:15, so the credits finished at after 14 minutes.  I consider to the Princess "game over" though.  There were many sub-optimal things in the run, like accidentally slipping off the white block in 1-3, missing the P-Switch in the Fortress, and landing on a pipe (which I couldn't see because of the somewhat garbled graphics) in 8-1, and forgetting to use a P-Wing in 1-3.  Maybe I can eventually perfect the run to under 13 minutes...

My PC (laptop) is working well now. And I saw all of your videos. Great job!

And yeah, I started timing myself (in SMB.3) when I entered the first stage. Then I stopped when I entered the door where Peach was. Also, you don't have to use the P-wing for w1-3. I just found it easier when I used a P-Wing and did it that way. But it's optional.

Actually, can you cancel my request? I was joking. But in a more serious manner, I think that you should put together a movie showing you how to go underground (as in, the underground glitch) in every level (where its possible) in SMS.

I don't own Super Mario Sunshine, and frankly, I'm horrible at it. Sorry... :(

Also, if the SMB3 video survives HyperCam and my video editor, it should be up by tomorrow evening. The Paper Mario one (not requested) will definitely be up then.

OK, HyperCam got me through the short Paper Mario battle, but just died on me trying to record the SMB3 speedrun. (It lengthened it by 90 seconds - ???) I have a fairly clean DVD copy of each, does anyone have a better alternative to getting DVD content into .avi or .mpg format? Otherwise, I might need to put a time limit of roughly 3 minutes on further requests.

I haven't done it in a while, but I think you should be able to rip it with DVD Decrypter and convert it with WinFF. If you have Windows, at least.

If you somehow get the DVD file onto your computer, you can go to Media Converter  (http://www.mediaconverter.org) and convert the file into a more desirable file.

Getting it into a file is the issue. The conversion I can figure out somehow, thanks anyway.

I'll look into that, thank you.

Meanwhile, until I get FBM's video up, requests are closed. However, I did get the Paper Mario video up, see it here:

Paper Mario: Anti-Guys Unit with 5 HP, no Life Shrooms:

Read the description for details about how I did it.

Yeah. If you get more questions wrong than right on the quiz, you have to fight them.

You're welcome. My camcorder should be in soon, so when it comes in I'll start taking requests again.

Also, my project is almost complete, and I almost have the max points in New Super Mario Bros.!

Out of curiosity, how many points is it possible to have?

Probably 99,999,999 points. Using the Mega Mushroom and getting to the flagpole with "99" seconds on the clock is an easy way get a lot of points. Along with using a Star or Koopa shell to knock out an army of enemies.

Is it possible to get the score to end in 9? Seems like points are always a multiple of 10.

It might be 99,999,990 points. I'm still trying to get that score and It's taking FOREVER! Right now I'm at 27,936,900 points.
Just a few million more to go...

The max Score is 99,999,999. I currently have around 67 million points. I use a strategy that I created to get points. It involves going into World 1-1 many times. Each run gives me around 64,200 points, and each run takes around 34 seconds.

That was great! It was a TAS (Tool-Assisted Spedrun) though, so don't be let down. It would probably take MANY tries to do that in real time.

Indeed.  I like tool-assisted as much as the next guy, but yours was still better because you did it on your own.
