Mario Chat / Well, goodbye for now. . .
« on: September 04, 2001, 08:19:05 PM »
With my first year in high school as a freshman coming up (sad to say), I'm not going to have as much free time as I like, thus I cannot visit the boards as frequent as I'm currently doing. Don't worry, this isn't a final goodbye, as I'll try to visit as soon as I can (probably about once or twice a week), but you'll be hearing much less from me. I've had an excellent summer here, and I'm glad that so many people were so friendly and welcoming to this newbie. For this I thank all of you, and I really had a great time. I enjoyed talking about the Mario universe with such great Mario fans (not to mention how much U've learmned about Mario), and I look forward to next summer where I can post as frequently as I've done in the past. Once again, I thank all of you with the bottom of my heart for being so friendly and tolerant to me while I was trying to fit in, and I look forward to posting once again.

Note: I know this is in the wrong forum, but most of my posts are in this forum, thus I wanted all of the General Mario chat visitors to read it.

Mario Chat / The Future of the Mario Universe
« on: September 01, 2001, 09:34:15 PM »
This thread is dedicated to the future of all Mario related products and games. In this thread you can try to predict what you think future Mario related games (Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, and even beyond that) will look and play like, what kind of technology will be used for Mario related products, and basically what you believe future Mario products will look and be like. You can also try to predict how the Mushroom World and all of the Mario characters will change in the future, and what type of new characters might appear. Also, you can discuss what you'd like to see in a futuristic Mario game, what type of characters you'd like to see in the future of Mario video games and how previous characters will change, and what types of Mario products you'd like to see in the future. Enjoy!

Basically, I believe that in the future Mario will get many more moves and power-ups, and many other characters will appear and hopefully will be playable. I believe the Mario Universe will branch out greatly and enter new realms of gameplay. Graphics in Mario games can only get better, and hopefully gameplay, gaming value, and variety will improve as well. With the coming of the Gamecube and other Nintendo systems, I have very high hopes for the Mario universe. As for Mario products, I believe Mario will be marketed less (obviously), and most of the Mario products will be Mario games. Hopefully, though, we can see some neat Mario products in the future. I really hope that Nintendo keeps on placing the same level of effort on Mario games as they've been doing, and I hope that the future of Mario games is bright. I hope that supporting characters like Yoshi, Luigi, Peach, etc. are used more, and hopefully we can see a few new characters. I do hope the future Mario games and Mario products are made with the utmost quality so that the Mario universe can be successful and enjoyable, and I do hope for a promising future for the Mario Universe.

Mario Chat / Its my B-day. . .and a MK:SC Review!
« on: August 29, 2001, 10:40:22 AM »
I'd like to start this topic by stating that it is my B-day today (Aug. 29)! Get out the music and lets party!
*10 secs. later*
Ok, enough partying. . .now, because I have gotten a chance to thoroughly play Mario Kart : Super Circuit, and I don't want this message to be spam, I will now give you a review on my opinion on the Mario-related racing game, so enjoy!

Gaming Value 10/10: Ah, this is probably MK:SC's greatest point - gaming value! Contrary to what it states on the box, there are actually 40 courses (with many obstacles) in this amazing game instead of 20, 24 courses being secret courses in which you have to earn (I have gotten all of the courses on 50cc already, but it took a ton of work). And with 3 (4?) levels of difficulty (50cc, 100cc, 150cc), you'll be racing for quite a while trying to complete this game. Also, don't forget that there is a Time Trial (with racing ghosts) mode to get the best times for the racetracks, and a Quick Run mode to practice the tracks you have gotten (trust me, you'll need it). With that in mind, you can play MK:SC for hours and hours. They chose the same 8 characters from MK64, and they have almost the same items (except less) from MK64, but still they did a great job with the items and characters. I haven't had a chance to play Multiplayer yet, but I could imagine that MK:SC's multiplayer modes are fantastic (especially Battle mode), so you'll be playing this game for quite a while ;) !

Graphics 10/10: Beautiful graphics! They got the 3D models of the racing characters perfectly (I think that they're even better than the models used in MK64 because they're much smoother and crisper.) Most of the game is in 3D, thus the graphics are quite amazing for a portable system, and the graphics of the racetracks (which are 3D) are absoulutely flawless. My only gripe is that the backgrounds are 2D, but they're done so professionally for a portable system, and having the whole game in 3D  would be impossible for the GBA at this time. Great job!

Music and voices 5/10: The music is somewhat repetitive and mediocre in this game, but its ok for a racing game (especially since its on the GBA - a portable system), and it is quite enjoyable. I especially like that they put some nostalgia music for some of the secret courses from previous Mario games. As for the voices - AAAAAAH! Luigi sounds like a soprano, Toad's voice could break glass, and Wario sounds like the fat Mandark from Egotrip (if you're a fan of Dexter's Lab), which is just weird. Mario, Peach, Bowser, and DK's voices sound almost identical to their voices from MK64, and they gave Yoshi his voice from Super Smash Bros. In short, they could have done better with the voices, but then again, I couldn't expect great voices for the GBA anyway, so given the circumstances, great job.

Gameplay 8/10: I knew that playing Mario Kart for GBA would be quite difficult, and I was right, though they did a very good job anyway. Most of the functions from MK64 are in play here, except you can't change the map view to border view or to speedometer (though you can use the speedometer in Time Trial mode), you can't do the sliding boost anymore (though you can slide), but they gave each of the characters a horn for their kart which is quite humorous. Playing Mario Kart on a GBA will take some time getting used to, but overall gameplay on the GBA is superior to that of many other racing games and superior to what I thought it would be, so very good job in that aspect.

Replay value 6/10: I can't really rate this because I haven't beaten the whole game yet, but I could imagine once you beat everything this game has to offer, it'll probably get boring. Luckily the challenge of improving your cup ratings (you're given a rating of your driving ability once you finish a cup), improving your time trial scores, and the constant fun of multiplayer bring this score up, thus its replay value is also quite good.

Overall (not an average of previous scores) 9/10: I believe Nintendo has really outdone itself again with this amazing racer. All Mario Kart fans will definitely enjoy this new addition to the Mario Kart universe. Almost all aspects of this game are perfect or almost perfect, so if you have some money to spare and want a good racing game, I'd recommend getting this game. In short, Mario Kart: Super Circuit is definitely a game worth buying for any Mario fan, and kudos to Nintendo for making such a great game.

Well, I hope you enjoyed my little review of MK:SC, and Happy Birthday to me!

Mario Chat / Stupid Final Bosses. . .
« on: August 13, 2001, 11:07:39 AM »
Is it me, or is it that Mario (or Luigi) wins most of his battles with the final bosses on account of stupidity of the final bosses? I have a few questions which point out the stupidity of the final bosses. . . .I mean, these just prove the intelligence of the final bosses. . .

1. In SMB, If Bowser is only vulnerable to lava and fire, why does he have an axe to cut the bridge he's on? If he didn't have this, only Firey Mario would be able to stop him. Also, since Bowser is closer to the axe in every battle, why doesn't he just cut the bridge while Mario is on it?

2. (Note: This takes the case in stupidity)In SMB2, why does Wart have a Veggie-maker in his room if he hates vegetables??? He's invulnerable to anything else, so why does he have a Veggie-maker?

3. This one is kind of excuseable, but in SMB3, why does Bowser try to crush the brick floor if he can see that its breaking? I mean he's invulnerable to defeat any other way but falling to his doom. . .

4. In SMW, Bowser is invulnerable in his Clown Copter, right? Well, then why does he throw Mechakoopas at you if its the only thing he's vulnerable to at that point? After being hurt several times by them, he should have realized it was stupid to keep throwing them at you and stopped. . .

5. In SM64, Bowser is indestructable to anything but those bombs on the side. So why does he have them???? If he has to have those bombs, Bowser at least should have tried to throw Mario in to them, but he doesn't even try to do that. . .

Those were just a few cases of stupidity on the final bosses part, and there are plenty more that I could pick out in the  Mario series. Well, I guess if the game designers didn't put those things in, the bosses would be unbeatable, but they at least could have put an excuse why the bosses put them in. . .well, anyway, I wanted to point that
out to the public. . .and don't get me wrong, I love the final bosses in the Mario series, its just that that was kind of bothering me, and I had to get that off my chest. Thanks for listening to my rambling. . .

Site Discussion / Fan Game Ideas
« on: August 09, 2001, 11:51:16 AM »
Why doesn't the TMK site have a fan game ideas section where people make up Mario video games and they can be posted there and possibly rated? It'd be a neat idea - I'd like to see some fictional game ideas that people thought up. . .I mean there's a Mario fan fiction section, so why can't there be a fan game idea section? Please post your thoughts on this idea, thanks for your compliance. . .

Yay, my first post at this board!
