It not only embraces the idea that he was built in a hurry, it also symbolizes his one-track mind. Destroy.

The rest of the design is up in the air. I'll settle on one after several sketches. I'll probably go with the fridge-shaped body and tube arms.

SMAAAASH!! Yoshi (as a texture) hasn't been released yet (though he is finished as of yesterday), but !!!

Currently, I've only had the character select screen portrait (seen above) replaced. The same texture is used on the victory screen, but if I want to replace the in-battle portrait as well, I'll have to do more work. I will do it later, and I'll also fix the fact that the "READY TO FIGHT" banner overlaps his eyes. I intend to make these for all the characters I stylize and some of the other texture hacks I make.

I feel successful. And, here's the full-sized version, which I'll use for other stuff:

Pichu has paler cheeks, a black tail and a collar, so no. However, the Pichu-styled ears could easily justify your supposition.

You'd be able to tell, even if I don't draw the black collar. In the long run, they don't look more similar than they should--lots of official designs for Pokémon aim at "X, the evolved form of Y, is basically a bigger Y." Charmeleon, Dewgong, Poliwrath, Clefable, Primeape, Arcanine...
