I dare anyone to come up with a better plot for a canonical M ario game.

I've tried. It cannot be done.

What does Canonic mean?

And YES IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A NEW MARIO
PLOT. There, I guess answered my own
question for me.

I'm sure that if Squaresoft was making SMRPG 2 that we'd all be amazed at the incredible new-ness and canonicality (?) of the plot.  I am convinced that Square can do just about anything.

According to Webster:

'canon- n. 1. rule; model; standard 2. An accepted principle or rule

Also according to Webster, 'canonic', 'canonical' and 'canonicality' are all real words! Yay!

Okay, the Mushroom Kingdom is under attack by a myriad of Super-strong characters that resemble past bosses. Mario and Luigi realise that Bowser has been using his evo guns to evolve his troops and using them as a super-army.
Mario and Luigi must go out and defeat their new enemies, the super-strong characters. Nyah!

Well, that's the basic plotline to a fanfic I was working on a while ago anyway. It was pretty good, but I never finish them.

Fryguy - summoned from the flame
Ralph Wiggum "I bent my wookie!"
Wolverine "This is... a big round room!"
