mIRC Alternative?

(1/1)

Toad:
Apparently our power went out at some point in the night, and since I was signed into the chatroom, it kicked me out. Upon restarting the computer, I tried to get back into mIRC, but the only two buttons that appear are Register and Exit. Exit is usually grey-out for about ten seconds after the window opens up, and closing/reopening the window usually switches it over to a continue button, but it hasn't worked yet.

So, is there some alternative to mIRC, preferably something free? mIRC keeps asking me to register, usually for anywhere between 15 or 20 bucks. I wouldn't mind paying that, but things besides chatting on the internet come first (not that I don't want to chat with you..)

Something free that supports scripts, since I would want to transfer my script over. Please and thank you. :)

Luigalaxy:
If you run Firefox, there's ChatZilla. To the extent of my knowledge, it does support scripts, but they have to be in JavaScript.

WarpRattler:
The scripting language mIRC uses is proprietary to that client, so you wouldn't be able to easily port stuff over.

On the other hand, nearly every IRC client out there has several inherent features that mIRC makes you program in yourself, such as automatically connecting to servers at launch and automatically identifying with NickServ upon connecting. So the only scripts you'd really lose would be things like triggers (and God knows we have way too many of those in #tmk).

I used ChatZilla for a time, but this was several years ago, so I can't really tell you anything about what it's like now.

I personally would recommend KVIrc, as it's free and works very well.

CoconutMikeNIke:
I use Trillian, and it seems to work fairly well. I admittedly don't know much about irc, like what features people have come to expect, but it's free and pretty straightforward.

Turtlekid1:
Seconding KVIrc.  It's worked pretty well for me.
