Title: Let's design the best Mario game ever.
Post by: Luigison on April 14, 2003, 07:18:10 PM
Post your idea's for or from the best Mario game.  In previous games, what items, levels, characters, abilities, music, graphic, etc. should be in the next game.  Also let talk about plot, new items and devices, etc.  Since we seem to know more about Mario then even Nintendo seems to lets design the best Mario game ever.  Or at least discuss what it would be like.

It should have the original theme from Super Mario Bros. I love that song. It could have new 3D models of stuff from SMB. And Bowser makes and army of mutant Koopas. Also bowser could be bigger and much scarier!

Yoshi's Island meets the Lost Levels!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

(Actually, I did draw (Rather poorly, I may add) 2 VERY difficult YI levels. I mean, VERY hard. Secret 5 hard, not Extra 5 hard)

...

Seriously though... I personally think it should be an RPG, done similarly to the style of SMRPG ... but with enhanced platform capabilities. As in, SMRPG meets SM64 or SMS. You can lose HP on the main field by falling too far from a cliff, or falling on spikes, for example. Kind of like falling into the lava in PM, but more drastic.

Of course, there'd be enemies, and you'd fight them RPG style.

As for other party members... Make them original characters! You know.... like Geno or something... only not Geno. You understand where I'm trying to go with that comment? Like the supporting characters in PM. All those are original.

Only you'd have to have either 3 or 4 characters fighting at once.... not 2.

As for a plot.... yes... I'll come up with something .... later ... *runs*

Maybe something where the princess gets caputered by Bowser for the umteenth time... and then something else happens.

Oh wait, that's too much like SMRPG. Never mind. I'll get back to you on plot.

Congratulations! You have just been blessed by the wisdom of Steve.

Indeed, I'm with Steve on this one.

That is, as long as they got Squaresoft to do it again. I won't bad-mouth Paper Mario, as I know so many people here like it, and I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but it wasn't for me, I guess.

But yeah, Project Mario RPG - Reborn would be to my liking. And no, I wasn't calling the game that.

I agree with Steve as well. On all points.

Let's see, I think it should have a multitude of playable characters, such as
Mario
Luigi
Toad
Wooster
Peach
Various Yoshis (Like, every color from YI and SMS)
E. Gadd
And lots of original characters too.
I think using Bowser again wouldn't seem cool the way it was in SMRPG.

It would be more free-roaming than SMRPG or PM and the scenery/playfield would be more interactive.
Also, I think it would be cool to have parts that were classic platforming as opposed to straight RPG battles, possibly similar to the first strike system in PM.

You can be silent and let the world think you are a fool, or you can open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I agree with the RPG style but I dont like RPG style battling. It should be so you can choose "RPG style" or "free roaming" battling. Also Bowser kids or whatever they're called should be back. And it should be on discs and have like 4 discs lingth. Like Final Fantasy 9. And after you collect everthing, a whole new adventure should be unlocked.

You mean the Koopa Kids?

Anyway in a game I want to roam feely so, I want kinda SM64ish but you can use more attacks like use combos.

Don''t argue with an idiot. They will take you to their level and beat you with experience.

You know, I have a RPG maker.  Everything your saying is possible for me to fit together!  Just suggest some ideas, maybe some maps, and leave everything up to me!

There are plenty of RPG makers available. I've got RPG Maker 2K, I think it is. The one Don Miguel had released quite some time ago.

You can do some pretty interesting stuff with them, but some of them take some real coaxing to get to do what you want. Take the battle system for example. It's in a completely Dragon Warrior style. No side-views, well, I shouldn't say that, for you can create a side-view, but it takes a tremendious effort.

If you are to attempt to make such a game, good luck with it.

For now let's just brainstorm.  For example, what are your favorite enemies, bosses, characters, suits, abilities, music, games, levels, etc.

I was think the overworld could be 3d and combine features from MarioRPG, PaperMario, Mario64, and Mario Sunshine.  The idividual underworld levels could be 2d like SMB 1,2,3, Lost Levels, SMW, YI.  Also I think it would be cool to collect items and suits from the over world to use in the sub/under world levels.  How about if, the items and suits could be stored in Mario's house like items in Animal Crossing.

Wow! It seems like we all have similar ideas for the perfect Mario game. I love the RPG style, except the battles get annoying sometimes. I think if they incorporate RPG battle styles, they should do something like Bump Attack automatically--once the enemy is weaker than you, you won't have to beat them RPG style.
Mushrooms R Us has a good idea--chose b/w which style you prefer.

I agree w/ CW; the game should be more interactive. Kinda like being able to mess with stuff like in Luigi's Mansion and SMS--but even more so. Oh, and TONS of characters you can talk to.

An interesting idea would be that the action's similar to DK64--you can switch off b/w characters at different points, and each would have to complete certain tasks. This would also be AWESOME to do on a 4-player mode. Every time you switched characters, a different player would control that character. Kinda like in SMB, SMB3, and SMW where Mario'd do one level, then Luigi'd do the next, and so forth.

I say the perfect game would be a cross b/w action/platform, adventure, and RPG.
Now I'm getting all hyped up!  :)

I have RM2k, so I can't do the real-time battle thing.  However, I can make day and night and different monsters come out at different times.

Title: Re: Let's design the best Mario game ever.
Post by: Sapphira on April 16, 2003, 10:45:05 AM
Oh yeah! That'd be awesome, too! If it were in real-time--like night and day and stuff. Kinda like in Animal Crossing (or Rogue Leader, I think)--the time of day corresponds with the GCN's clock.

Naw, I still like the way battles against bosses were done in SMS and SM64. You have to use the right methods in order to beat them--along with good timing and skill.

There should also be lots of side quests (i.e. Paper Mario) where by fulfilling them will add to your skill/essential build-up items, etc.

Heros should also be able to use a wide variety of attacks and skills, and these would build as you progress in the game or complete certain tasks.

Oh, and here's another thought. (I'm on a roll here!) Since the levels and worlds will be huge--and connecting to each other--there should be a map screen or something that when you press on a certain place, you'll warp there automatically, instead of having to backtrack thru everything.

Some of this has been mentioned, but:

It should have a visit to all worlds in the Mushroom World, Bowser being the main enemy, and Wario causing mayhem along the way.  Old friends, like Geno, Mallow, etc., and enemies should be in it.  Much longer game, more platforming, (maybe it could be RPG-like) and, like in SMB3, Toad could own little minigames, and/or shops to buy items, etc.
Title: Re: Let's design the best Mario game ever.
Post by: Chupperson Weird on April 16, 2003, 09:29:19 PM
Another interesting aspect could be that it actually has the history from the other games, and retains the characters from SMRPG & PM. For instance, I'd like to see what happened with Raz & Raini, or Gaz, and it would be nice to get a letter or two from Parakarry, and so on. That would be cool.
Title: Re: Let's design the best Mario game ever.
Post by: Sapphira on April 16, 2003, 09:34:43 PM
Yes, exactly. It should basically continue from where the saga left off, like characters would make references from things in past games. Oh, and cameos from previous Mario games. Lots and lots--kinda like what CW said, you find out what's been going on with them.

I agree with you. You know, the new Zelda games sometimes have references to past games in the series. Majora's Mask had a lot of stuff that was reminicent of Ocarina of Time...the same with The Wind Waker.

Paper Mario had a small amount of  references to past Mario games, such as the Star Spirits basically being the Seven Stars from Super Mario RPG... Plus the uncountable amount of cameos from Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World...
Title: Re: Let's design the best Mario game ever.
Post by: Sapphira on April 17, 2003, 07:35:39 AM
That's probably a reason why I love that game so much.  Ahh...countless memories...  I especially liked the way they used mostly old enemies, also imcorporating new ones.

(You know the Gloombas in Toad Town Tunnels? How they're a blue-greenish color? Don't they bear a striking resemblence the Goombas that appear in the underground levels in SMB? Makes you think...)

Anyhoo, the game areas should also be consistent (like the location of Toad Town, Koopa Village, Yoshi's Island, etc--AND THE LAYOUT! PEACH'S CASTLE KEEPS CHANGING!), mixing in plenty of old locations in the Mushroom World and Kingdom, and adding LOTS of new ones.

I think Intelligent Systems should design the game. So far, I couldn't be more pleased with the works they've done on Mario games. (Only if they WERE Paper Mario and SMK: Super Circuit.)

Oh, and IT NEEDS DAISY AND WALUIGI! THEY DESERVE TO BE IN A MARIO ADVENTURE! (SML I don't really count.)

Anyway, Intelligent Systems would be good, but I'd like it from EAD.
Title: Re: Let's design the best Mario game ever.
Post by: Smithy on April 24, 2003, 06:01:28 PM
O.K., I'm making this up as I go along, so just bear with me.

Alot of the above suggestions are great, but I don't really want TOO much RPG stuff.  By that I mean overhead views and turn-based battles.  Essencially I want something like SM64, but HUGER!

You'd be able to pick your character at the start, each with different strengths, weaknesses, and abilities.  I'm thinking Mario, Luigi, Toad, and maybe Peach, though we might just want her be captured again (but we would put a new spin on it!).  It'd be so cool if there'd be a multiplayer mode where up to four players go through the adventure at the same time, as the different characters.  It'd be hard with the split screen, though.

My general concept for this game sounds kind of strange at first.  I'm just thinking of that old Miyamoto-style whimsy.  I was thinking there'd be this sort of "sky world" that Mario (and the rest of the characters, though for now on I'll just say Mario) flys around in Wing Cap style.  It'd be a cross between Rainbow Walk from SM64 and Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64 (there'd be "space" areas as well).  This would be the main overworld.  Mario would fly here and warp to the different worlds of the game.  When I say worlds, I mean WORLDS! Not just levels, but worlds with tons of worlds!  These worlds would each have a distinct "flavour" or theme. I don't mean theme as in "Desert World" or "Water World."  The worlds would each be more diverse and detailed, like our own real Earth.  They just have to be different somehow.  A world could be mostly covered in water with tropical island, making a mix of ocean levels and jungle levels.  The world Mario starts off on, the Mushroom World, would have plains, mountains, deserts, oceans, etc., but with a whole lot of big mushrooms, which is why it's called "Mushroom World."  Yet another world could have lots of mysterious ruins, statues, and temples whoose mystery you must find out, but still have diverse terrain.  You should get the world concept by now.

Anyway, each world would have lots of areas (it's a WORLD), each with its own secrets and objectives.  There'd of course be towns to visit and people to meet.  The different worlds would have a main objective, which would end with a battle with the world boss.  But the quests should be COMPLETELY different from each other.  The world quests can't follow a pattern like "enter location, find out problem, go through begining quest, learn song, play song to enter dungeon, beat boss and everybody happy" (this is what Majora's Mask was like).

Of course, there should be a reason for Mario & co. flying through this sky realm to these different worlds.  Might have something to do with stars.  You can figure this out.

I also want a return of the classic gameplay of the old Mario games, but brought to 3D.  I want super mushrooms that REALLY make Mario grow in size.  This would make him do more damage to enemies, smash blocks, and jump higher to reach secret areas.  I mentioned blocks back there.  I want the return of block platforms floating in the sky, just like in the old 2D games.  Mario should jump higher in this game than he did in SM64.  Another thing about blocks is that there'd be different types that can only be broken certain ways.  Brown blocks can be broken by regular Mario.  Yellow blocks can only be broken by Super Mario.  Red blocks are broken by Fiery Mario's flames.  Green blocks need koopa shells thrown at them.  And maybe Golden blocks that need to be rammed through by Mario when he has a Starman.  This arrangement of blocks would add more strategy to levels.

Those are my thoughts.  There's a lot here, but I hope it's worth it.

P.S.  I just registered yesterday.  Hi everybody!

I think that there should be certain abilities the two or more charaters perform together, kinda like how Bowser would huck mario at enemies in SMRPG, but they should be interchangeable such as Mario and Luigi each throw a fireball in the air to create one big fireball to crush the enemies, but when Mario and Yoshi team up Mario jumps on the enemy and then Yoshi eats them, you get the idea. Also classic sound effects should be peppered all over along with new space-age sound effects to create a spicy sound effect sandwich. Ooh Ooh! There should aslo be mini games like the ones in Mario Party to break-up the adventure, plus the ability to grow huge when you use a super mushroom and stay that untill you are hit, not for just 10 seconds like in SSBM. Oh, there should also be the ability fly on a magic carpet, that would be just spiffy.uhhh... I'm all out of ideas about stuff.

I''m not lazy, I''m just... uh...

I like the idea of having Starman Mario being able to bust certain types of blocks.  I also like the way Fire Mario could melt ice in SMB3.

Naw, I don't like crossovers. If anything, maybe a little cameo, similar to Link and Samus' appearance in SMRPG.

I think I've mentioned this before, but the game would be so awesome if it had Mario character cameos galore! Like Raz and Raini, Dyna and Mite, the Koopalings would be cool, Minh T., Tayce T., Kamek, Jinx... And of course Geno, Mallow, Goombario and the rest of the party members. Ya know, characters from previous adventures.

They should also have ALL the enemies from previous games...although I wouldn't see the point of re-making baddies for higher levels, like how in PM there are Fuzzies, Forest Fuzzies, and Jungle Fuzzies.

Also, they should bring back all the previous items. Especially power-ups, like the Cape Feather, Fire Flower, Tanooki Suit, etc.

It would be awesome if the adventure involved the star characters, like Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, etc., and you could switch between them, similar to the way you switched from Mario's point of view to Peach's in Paper Mario. Only more frequently b/w all of 'em.

Each would have to complete a different task before you could switch, and multipule tasks could occur.
Say you were Mario, and then you started a task. You gave up on that one, so you switched to another one. You find a "meeting place" where you know you're gonna find the others and switch from Mario to Luigi. Then you can work on Luigi's task. Kinda similar to the switching in DK64.

Certain tasks you'd have to complete in a particular order, but for the most part, the rest would be free reign. Once you obtained enough Stars/Shines or something similar to that effect, you could move on to the next world/area.

As for battles and enemies, I like the style in SMS. But also with Real-time RPG with HP and such, as mentioned before in this thread.

a beatem'up idea for a mario game becuse their  hasnt been a beat'em up with mario before

the story is that You start out in mushroom kingdom and move on to  Amusement Park,  Cemetery, wario's Bar,Kero ewers, dreamland, ith each segue the mario seems to get closer to prising prising peach from bowsers grasp, and occasionally you will have silly bonus rounds(hit buttons to blow up a balloon, or hit buttons for mario to slap  awake),with the level layout is that the final one goes to the boss fight too quickly, and you are stuck maneuvering repetitively for a while. The boss keeps compacting and re-arranging . The gameplay will be simuler to teenage mutant ninja turtles ,quirky humor helps give the finale more value .other levels seaside, nimbus islands, smithy factory and bowsers palace

the music-upbeat and techno

the enemys-Zeus Guy,Koopa Troopas,Thunder Lakitus,Torpedo Ted,Shark Chomp,Shy Squad,Ninja,Spear Guy,Mace Guy,Bandana Blue,Birdo,Crystal King,Dizzy Dandy,Dry Bones,Flying Goomba,Lava Piranha,bomberman,blue mage,chocobos,Man Hacks,Prowler,Alien Gunship,Zombies,Ant Lion,Combine Soldiers,Alien Slave,Alien Grunt,Tentacle,Garg,Alien Controller,Gonarch,
The Man in the Suit,Shock Roach,Shock Troopers,Pit Drone,Zombie Grunt,

the bosses-Valentina,Tubba Blubba,Tutankoopa,Smilax,Octolot,Naval Piranha,The kung fu Master, smithy,Monstermama bowser's body guard and the last boss bowser

the items-Switch,Red Shell,P-Wing,Fire Bomb,ham,beef stew,mcnuggets,candy,granades,stars,blow torch,shot gun,Laser-Guided rocket launcher,crow bar,357 Magnum,MP-5,Gauss Gun,The Hive-hand,Snark,Super Nailgun,Greasegun,Alien Spore Globe,Shock Rifle,Displacer,Barnacle Gun

I think it should be a 4 or more disc set with 10 chapters on each disc to make it really long and each disc's world would have a theme like ocean, desert or whatever.

As for what kind of game it should be, it should have the look and control of SMS with role playing elements but fights should be like the ones in Wind Waker.

I won't be so bold to call it the best Mario game ever, but I'm still working on the "Toad's Adventure: The Return of Wart" game which I announced here a long long time ago. It's an RPG, sort of in the vein of the two existing Mario RPGs, but with a more mature battle system.

The story centers around Toad (naturally), who has just returned to the Mushroom Kingdom shortly after the events in Paper Mario. The game opens up in the Koopahari desert to show Malek, grandson of Kamek and successor to the now-outcast Kammy, raising a mysterious ancient temple from the sands.

Bowser attacks the Mushroom Kingdom with a force of unprecendented size in anticipation of claiming the powers in that temple. Part way through the story, you also learn that Wart has escaped from exile in the Land of Dreams, and has joined with Bowser.

There's a few cool plot twists, and there's elements from and allusions to almost every existing Mario game, as well as a few in-jokes from the net (including a couple from this site).

Among the eight plus party members you'll get are the Princess, and much later on, Luigi. Also starring will be Toad's fabled long-lost cousin, who was rumored to be a playable character in the never-confirmed Mario game for SNES CD, who is expert at handling poisonous and carnivorous plants.

Some of the locations in the game will be drawn from both Mario RPG and Paper Mario.

As for legality, well, this is a private project. I have no intention to distribute this en masse or make any webpages for it. I can make sure it gets to anyone who wants to play it once it's done though ;)  The game engine is really coming along, but most of the content remains to be done.

I am working on a Mario game with an overworld similiar to Super Mario RPG and levels like SMB thru SMW.

Quasar, what are you using to make your games?  I am using DarkBASIC.  That is also what Cash Crazed used to make his Mario Bros. Arcade clone.

I'm writing a reusable game engine from scratch in VC++ with the SDL library, mostly for use as a portfolio item. Toad's Adventure is just a side project that will use that engine :->

I think it should it should be in 3D, but should also be a side-scroller, like Capcom's Viewtiful Joe.

hmmm... err... How about a game called SUPER MARIO REMIX for the Gamecube. Basic story is, Mario is brought a book from the Boo's. In the book contains flash backs of Mario's greatest adventures. You can choose which ones to accomplish, with added special effects like, for example, in Super Mario Bros., the graphics can remain classic 8-bit, but when you hit a question block, it has sparkles. Things like that. Plus, it could have an Extras section, like mini-games, or extra quests somewhat similar to the challenge mode on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and trophys. There can be a shop held by Toad on the corner too! You can buy items, to "help along the way" (HA!). For example, you can buy Fire-Flowers so when you activate them, you start out Fiery Mario when you begin one of the games of your choosing. You can sell items also, to collect coins. When you collect enough coins, you can pay the Boo's, to let you into their Mansion, where they show you their treasure room. That's when you unlock the SECRET box! The Secret Box contains Secret facts, mini-games, pictures, and more extra quests determining how many coins you put in the Secret Box's slot. The best games could go all the way up to Paper Mario maybe, (excluding Super Mario All-Stars) then stop. This game would be a two-disc set. Whatta ya' think?? I dunno about the idea of the Boo's giving him the Book or the Boo's letting you into their Mansion yet, but for now, it's all of I can think of.
