Video Game Chat / Final Fantasy
« on: August 11, 2015, 08:09:04 PM »
Hi Friends!

Recently I've been getting into some casual gaming again. I've always wanted to start playing games in the Final Fantasy series, but I am at a bit of a loss. Where to start? Which game is actually the first? Is every game standalone (like the Zelda series, more or less) or need I to have played FF I, for instance, in order to understand FF Tactics,?

And so, TMKers, what is the best way to get into the Final Fantasy series without being completely lost?

Hello Fellow TMKers!

"Look!" said Toad, "A Chain Chomp!" ... Just kidding!

Tomorrow is my 10th anniversary of activity here at the Fungi Forums. I know that I have not always been the most active of posters on these parts of the internet, but I do feel that this message board and web community has made a profound mark on my teenage and young adult life so far. I'd like to dedicate this topic to the great folks whom I've met during my time here -- and to ten more years!

The weekend trips to my grandmother's house in the early 90s lasted seemingly forever. A boy of four or five, I with my sister would be dropped off for a weekend of food, crafts, and NES with my grandmother. In her retirement she took the time to explore the worlds of many NES titles: Adventure Island II, Wacky Racers, Bubble Bobble 2: Rainbow Island, Tetris, and all the rest. Still, two games stuck out as the highlights of those weekends. Super Mario Brothers and SMB3 became the feature presentations of those trips. I would play and die, and grandma would play and die, and my sister would simply die, and the girl who lived next door would play and play until she inevitably beat the game. We were all in awe of her ability. On one occasion, my grandpa, pipe in his mouth, was watching her play, when she demonstrated the infinite life glitch off of the koopa in 3-1. "How the hell are you so good at that thing?" he asked. She just smiled. I wanted to be that good. Grandpa never said such things when I was playing. I made it to 8-1 once when I was six or so. But my father dragged my out of the house, my hands still clutching the controller which he ripped out of the system as Mario was in mid jump. He met his demise at the bottom of a pit.

As a young teenager, I was very much enthralled -- and still am, but to a different degree -- by Super Mario 64. While surfing the internet , I came across a website with a particularly delightful splash page (if you are in the know, you can still see it). The simple black background and seemingly endless information about my favorite video game character kept me coming back for more.

To this day, I'm not quite sure why I joined the Fungi Forums or why I became a presence in #tmk for several years, but I am always grateful that I did. When the !stats came out on #tmk, I was often excited to see how well I had performed in the chat that month. While my friends were checking MySpace or the Facebook, I would find myself returning home from high school to check the Fungi Forums. Better conversation (and grammar [and language, {right Sapphira?}]) here anyhow.

While my love for video games waned in favor of books and music, I never lowered the flag on this community. I think that's a testament to each of you in building a community that is about so much more than video games. While I've never been the most informed gamer, nor the most impressive tech expert, nor the funniest, nor the smartest, nor the most articulate, I've always been made to feel a homely welcome on this little slice of the internet. For that I am grateful. You all are the reason for that.

If I might borrow a line from Bilbo Baggins, “I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” To Deezer and MEGAB¥TE, Chupperson Weird, Sapphira, Luigison, David, Suffix, Lizard Dude, Watoad, TEM, Rao, BP, Markio, NintendoExpert89, WarpRattler (and even to jon and Vidgmchtr): thank you. Thanks for ten years of great laughs, great conversations, and great memories.
To Deezer and his staff: thanks for making such a great website that has attracted such a great community over the years. All the work you've put into this site over the years has made it something special. The Forum update was a great undertaking, and your constant willingness to help and listen to annoying teenage punks (like I was) amazes me. You've done fine work with this site, and for that you should be proud.
To Sapphira: Thanks for the help with the ADVANCED Poster Awards for those two years. Long live Sapphira Fan Club!
To LD, Luigison, Markio and my other interlocutors: thanks for always forcing me to examine my arguments from all sides and for helping me to sharpen my rhetorical skills and hone my argumentative abilities.
To TEM and Chupperson: Thanks for the great memories in #tmk and for the awesome conversations we shared.
To anybody whom I might have missed or forgotten: Thanks for the memories. Everyone here holds a special place in my heart.

To The Fungi Forums, to #tmk, to all of you: long live The Mushroom Kingdom!

Video Game Chat / Speedrunning Marathons
« on: October 11, 2013, 07:56:53 AM »
Hey all!

It's been a while since I've been very involved in the gaming world. Unfortunately, in college and grad school, I have been more consumed with schoolwork than gaming. Recently, however, I've gotten back into gaming largely because of the Awesome Games Done Quick marathons. I've found this sort of meta-game stuff to be very enjoyable. My experience of the replay value of games has skyrocketed since watching speedruns.

I've been trying to learn how to run OoT and SM64 myself since I started watching others. Exploiting glitches and frame-perfect inputs require a new level of practice, strategy, and precision. Routing and rerouting runs also adds a new component of difficulty when completing a game with speed as the goal.

I was just wondering if anyone else here is excited by and interested in speedrunning as I have been over the past few months or so.

General Chat / Winter 2006 ADVANCED Poster Awards
« on: December 20, 2006, 07:33:51 PM »
-- WINTER 2006 ADVANCED POSTER AWARDS --

Well, here it is again, the end of another fun year here at the Fungi Forums. For the second straight year, Sapphira and I will be facilitating the APAs. This year, we've made an executive decision: a lot of categorites. Hopefully, this will work out, since the forums are rather "booming."

RULES: Voting begins immediately. The polls will close on Friday, January 12, 2007 at exactly 11:59:59 PM EST. Please in this topic, only vote and keep the chatter to a minimum--this makes the counting of votes much easier for Sapphira and I. You may vote for a first place and second place for each category. Be sure to mark your first and second place votes accordingly! You do not have to vote all at once, but it would be most appreciated. You may abstain from voting in a category by saying "DID NOT VOTE -- or something similar. You may NOT vote for yourselff. Please copy and paste the following template to vote.

1)   Poster of the Year-
2)   Best Moderator/Admin-
3)   Best Regular-
4)   Best Newbie-
5)   Topic of the Year-
6)   Post of the Year-
7)   Best Signature-
8)   Best Custom Title-
9)   Most Amiable-
10)   Most Average-
11)   Cleverest-
12)   Blast from the Past-
13)   Most Missed-
14)   Wisest and Most Mature-
15)   Social Butterfly-
16)   Most Improved-
17)   Most Helpful-
18)   Funniest-
19)   Dynamic Duo-
20)   WTD Award-
21)   Deezer Award-

Most of the categories are self-explanatory. But a few of them require SPECIAL RULES. Here is a brief overview of each category, with special regulations for some of them. The categories with special rules are marked with the red text.

1)   Poster of the Year -- In this award, choose the best poster that has contributed THIS YEAR. He/She should be , in your estimation, the best all around poster in the Fungi Forums.
2)   Best Moderator/Admin -- This must be a moderator / Admin who you think is doing an extra-ordinary job in his or her position.
3)   Best Regular -- This award goes to the person who is neither a Moderator or Admin, but shows that extra something that makes them worthy of this award.
4)   Best Newbie -- This is for a member who has joined sometime in this year (He/She was a newbie sometime during the year, not just right now) and shows extreme competence.
5)   Topic of the Year -- This award goes to the creator of the best topic of the year. THE TOPIC MUST HAVE BEEN CREATED DURING 2006. A link also must be provided to the topic.
6)   Post of the Year -- This award goes to the creator of the best post. For this award, the POST must have been made in 2006 (but not necessarily the topic). Be sure to link to the post, provide the poster, and the reply number.
7)   Best Signature -- This award goes to the creator of the best, most creative Sig around. The Sig must have been created in 2006.
8)   Best Custom Title-- This award goes to the person who was given the best custom title throughout the year. Sapphira has compiled a list of these, and they will be posted soon.
9)   Most Amiable -- This is codename for the nicest person around these parts.
10)   Most Average-- This award goes to the poster who does not strive for more. Who around here doesn't do anything special, and is the perfect example of your "average Joe" around the forums.
11)   Cleverest -- This award goes to the poster who has that special something. That "creative spark," if you will. He/she can come up with comething creative, witty, and clever right on the spot.
12)   Blast from the Past-- The newest award, this award goes to a poster who has come back from a long hiatus (break) and has surprised everyone!
13)   Most Missed -- This is the only award that goes to somebody who is not active. Where did they go? Vote here for somebody who you would love to see back here sometime soon!
14)   Wisest and Most Mature-- Because we had so many topics in the first place, Sapphira and I again made an executive decision to lump these two awards into one. This poster is a mature person, who knows a lot about Mario, but more about every day life.
15)   Social Butterfly-- This is Sapphira's brainchild. Who is here all the time, and really blossoms. I guess one could say this will go to the person who contributes the most, is here a lot, and gets along with everyone.
16)   Most Improved -- Which poster has grown the most in the past year? The choice is yours.
17)   Most Helpful --Think back to when you were a newbie. Who would you have wanted to befriend you in your first days here? Who would have been the most helpful person in your beginning days. Think about now, who still helps you with problems your having.
18)   Funniest -- Hahahahah!!!
19)   Dynamic Duo -- This category was tried in the awards a few years ago, if I am not mistaken. It is the only category that is given to two posters. Who would you consider the "best friends" around these parts.
20)   WTD Award -- You all should know the WTD history. Disiregardless. Who is the poster that makes you go WTD? nine times out of ten, or even better, ten times out of ten.
21)   Deezer Award- Yep.

Voting begins now. Please follow the rules. I will PM you to change it it is not the correct format. Thanks. Let the fun begin!

Forum Games / Secret Decoder Ring
« on: April 09, 2006, 08:15:22 PM »
Well, it's not exactally a decoder ring, but, I thought this would be fun. This topic is like the hangman topic, except in here, you must decode a message that is in some sort of hidden code. When you Figure out the message, state the code,  and the message. I don't exactly know how this will turn out but, we'll give it a shot.

EXAMPLE:
POST 1)
DECODE MY AWESOME MESSAGE!( (or some other suitable greeting...)

           yjod od s hppf ,rddshr.

This guy invents a new code for the next person to decode.

POST 2)
This is a good message.

CODE TYPE: one key to the right.

As I was bored one night, I decided to scan my mouse pad. Now, I know many of you have optical mouses. These often do not require pads. I have an optical mouse and a pad. my pad is pretty cool as you see.
What kind of cool mouse pad and mouse do you use?

General Chat / Winter 2005 ADVANCED POSTER Awards

Now, I will probably be hated for doing this.... But I have some very strange feeling that Meowrik isn't going to be back. So I've decided that I should take over this. As many of you know, I hate making topics, because I am terrible at making them. I am going to wait until Friday evening to post the categories, this will give me some time to make them and whatnot. Also, this may give a little more time, if perhaps Meowrik is still lingering around, and he would like to take over. If not, I think I am going to take charge.

For those of you who don't know, the Poster awards were started a long time ago. Meowrik eventually took them over, and made them the highlight of the winter (and summer) for many of us.

So between today and tomorrow, I would like to have some suggestions for categories.

The Rules will be posted along with the categories tomorrow evening. Voting Begins as soon as the categories are posted.  Voting closes Janurary 10th, 2006.

EDIT: The categories will be up first thing Friday morning That is the 23rd of December..

EDIT: TIE-BREAKER ROUND BEGINS! INFO FOUND HERE

EDIT (again): Results are in, and the ceremony's been presented! Who won what?!

General Chat / Mole World
« on: November 21, 2005, 06:37:05 PM »
Ok, so today in Honors Chemistry, my teacher did the coolest thing ever. My teacher decided that he needed a way to convey the concept of the mole to us. A mole is the Chemist's dozen, if you don't know. It equals 6.023x10^23 molecules. It can also be used to determine Mass, Volume, and Concentration with many other uses.

In order to get from the masss of an element to the number of particles in it, one must use the mole.

So... my chem  teacher thought up the concept of "MOLE WORLD." In order to get from Mass world to Particle world, you must go through the warp zone, MOLE WORLD. He thenn was like: "HOw many of you play Mario Brothers? I do, I like the warp zone. YOu should all like Mole World." I thought that was a funny thing.
