Title: Another of those terrible newbly threads
Post by: BP on December 02, 2008, 12:28:01 AM
360 games. I know B-K and Orange Box. Need recommendations. My mother wants a list from me, which is a good sign.

Retail games: Since you're also dealing with satellite Internet, there's not much point in recommending games all about online multiplayer, so...I'd go with the two games you already mentioned (though wouldn't it make more sense to have the Orange Box on PC, where it's cheaper and you don't have to deal with console FPS controls? Also you could hold a nifty contest to give away the extra copy of Portal), plus Mirror's Edge, and possibly Dead Space and Fallout 3. If none of those appeal to you, ask for points cards so you can get...

XBLA games: Geometry Wars 2. Braid. E4. Both Penny Arcade games. Portal: Still Alive. I'd suggest Boom Boom Rocket but you've said you're not good at rhythm games.

Also, I don't know if you'd be interested in any of the like five retail JRPGs on the system (I can only think of Star Ocean, Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Eternal Sonata at the moment, plus stuff that hasn't come out yet like FFXIII).

Someone who owns the system had better step in at this point and suggest other games, because I know there's more awesome stuff BP'd probably like that I can't think of right now.

WarpWrattler's suggestions are utterly horrible to Bird Person's tastes. E4 and Portal: Still Alive would be huge wastes of money for him. I don't think he likes Penny Arcade humor/swearing either. Dead Space and Fallout 3 are much too grim/bland. I've never heard him mention a non-Mother JRPG either. Mirror's Edge would probably be good.

What Bird wants is Dead Rising. Also check out Crackdown, the best game about jumping since SMB. You might also check out Rare's Kameo.

And points for XBLA to get:
Braid
N+

But hey, all XBLA games and most retail stuff has demos right there, so try try try! (Uh, I guess that doesn't help your mom beforehand though.)

Thing is, my computer's not that good. But maybe I should learn to reboot more than once a month. Are FPSes really so horrible to play with a controller? I mean, I've always thought Metroid Prime is just plain hard.

LD, I play other JRPGs. Final Fantasy I&II, for example.

Would he enjoy Oblivion?

Also, if you're getting The Orange Box, you'll have to play Half-Life 1 before you play Half Life 2 so you'll need to get that for computer some time soon.

Definitely worse, but not horribly so. I am currently weighting graphics and chair comfort over mouse control and actual updates, for instance. Metroid Prime has a control scheme unlike anything else, btw.

I don't know if they're still doing it, but Valve is selling Half-Life 1 (not the Source version, just the plain-jane original) through Steam for $1.00. Seriously. One buck. That is, if you're willing to download one CD worth of data from the Internet.

Half-Life 1 is good (and I personally prefer it over the sequel because it's so fun to get lost in Black Mesa, just feels like a real place you're going through). But you may also want to consider that the Black Mesa mod (Half-Life 1 redone in Source the way it was meant to be) is coming out in 2009. Check it out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGlhgVz5r6E). If you have Half-Life 2 or any other Source game, that mod will work on your machine. I just hope quick movement in the game isn't as disorienting as it looks in that trailer.

I'll agree that Metroid Prime can be tough at times, especially near the end (I never finished the last boss). But if you think Metroid Prime is tough, try its sequel. Now Metroid Prime 3, people are saying it's like a new experience because you can now point and shoot with the Wii remote. Resident Evil 4 for Wii has the same control scheme. But from my experience, I'm not able to hold the remote completely still, so the pointer's always shaking around. I find the new scheme harder to use. Maybe I have an easier time with PC FPSs because the mouse stays on the ground. Doesn't change that I'm terrible at FPSs in general, I never got used to the dual-stick control that some games use nowadays. Theoretically it should be the best of both worlds, but my fingers can't get used to it. I grew up on Turok.

What about Skate or Burnout 3? Oh wait, Burnout 3 was last generation? Well, it should work with the backwards-compatibility thing, right?

$1.00. Seriously. One buck.

Dude, that deal ended a while ago.

Anyway, 360 games. Must-haves that simply transcend genre bias include the Halo trilogy, Dead Rising, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Guitar Heroes 2 and 3 (maybe World Tour), and GTA 4. You might maybe like Burnout Revenge (the best in the series), Full Auto, and Need for Speed Carbon.

Try Viva Pinata, unless you hate pet sims or something. Also, do me a favor and play Sonic Unleashed and enjoy it. It's the best 3D Sonic game in years.

It's tough to recommend games for someone who has yet to venture far from Nintendo consoles...

You like F-Zero a lot, which means you can tolerate racing games, which means I recommend something from the Burnout series. I think my top three favorite Burnouts are Burnout Paradise, then Burnout 3, then Burnout Revenge. You might go for Burnout 3 since it's an Xbox Original game, so it'll be much cheaper.

Most of the games people have listed here are really good, but I'm not sure what kind of a gamer you are, so I don't know if you'd like them. Keeping in mind your terrible status for online gaming, I'm going to recommend good single-player games. Assuming you'd be willing to play any type of game, my top three recommendations out of every Xbox 360 game ever are BioShock, skate., and Guitar Hero 3.

As for Live Arcade, yeah, you can play the free demos, so just try them out before buying.

Forgot about Dead Rising and Crackdown, also just made some blanket suggestions.
Trying demos of retail games isn't really an option with a download cap anyway. Ditto for Xbox Original titles and some larger XBLA titles.

*sigh* Then go buy the Burger King games off eBay or something.
Title: Re: Another of those terrible newbly threads
Post by: BP on December 02, 2008, 06:35:58 PM
I could always do my downloads after midnight, when the download cap isn't in effect.

I'm going for the Arcade, so no backward compatibility.

Racers: Ever since I played F-ZERO, I've enjoyed Mario Kart less. It's so slow and the tracks are boring. The only thing that saves it is items, but items also get annoying in the newer ones. What I'm saying is, the racing game has to have something really great about it, or I'll just find myself saying "I need more BOOST POWER" or "I need more CYLINDER WAVE."

Every time I see a commercial or demo in a store for a really cool racing game that I might like it's for PS3. However I'm sure there's plenty of cool exciting racing games for the 360, just look it up.

Nnnno you're not. Save the extra money and get one with a hard drive. You're going to need it.

Ever since I played F-ZERO, I've enjoyed Mario Kart less. It's so slow and the tracks are boring. The only thing that saves it is items, but items also get annoying in the newer ones. I hate racing games. Gran Turismo and Forza and especially Need for Speed, those all bore the heck out of me. Burnout is totally different, though. The crashes. The crashes. The game's all about wrecks and tricks and making other people crash and crashing into intersections and it's soooo fun. Burnout is, by a mile, my favorite series of game that involves anything with a motor and wheels (my favorite game involving wheels in general: skate.) I've never played F-Zero so I can't compare it to Mario Kart or Burnout, but Burnout is definitely not slow. Although it is pretty much all about boosting. Boosting and crashing. I love it.

With no hard drive, you can kiss most of the good things on XBLA goodbye unless you plan on buying buttloads of memory cards and swaping the games you have in and out when you need to play them.

Also, Chupperson and ShadowBrian are real reets.

360: Pure awesome, with some great exlcusives, but sadly with a monthly online fee should you wish to interact with other humans.
PS3: Further awesome, with free online, but the system itself is mad-expensive.
Wii: An average of one decent game every five months, with 1995-era online for the games that even have it.

Please don't turn this thread into a console-comparison/flamewar thread. I like talking about the 360 and how Bird Person should buy one.

As I stated in a chatroom, I believe the things Bird Person will need when purchasing a 360 are:

1) Xbox 360 Pro (299.99)
2) Play and Charge Kit for Wireless Controller (19.99)
3) Extra money for a chosen game and tax (~79.99)
For a grand total of about 400 dollars.

I know it's a lot more than your previous plan, which was probably just a 360 Arcade (199.99), but here's why you should not get the Arcade:

-You won't be able to save your games on 256 megabytes
-Buying a bunch of 512 memory cards (49.99) is ridiculous because once you buy two, BAM, there's the price of 60 gigs' worth of hard drive
-No backward compatibility for all the need-to-play Xbox Originals (Psychonauts, among others)
-Wired controller
-No ethernet cable

Whoa! A wired controller and zilch space? I knew the Arcade was designed to try to siphon casuals off of Nintendo, but geez...

360: Pure awesome, with some great exlcusives, but sadly with a monthly online fee should you wish to interact with other humans.

QF... you know what, no. POTY.

Oh, just a sec here... not to jack this thread, but could anybody point me in the direction of a past "terrible newbly thread" regarding the PS2 and/or PS3? I've been considering getting ahold of the latter...

Do your homework for once, BrainInTheShadows. Only the Core had wired controllers, and it's been discontinued.

Anyway, I'll just buy a bigger hard drive later on, or get it for my birthday, or both. As for Ethernet, did you forget I have a satellite connection? Think I'm going to be playing online anyway!??

Hey. ShadowBrain. Shut up.

Seriously, RIGHT after I make a post about how this thread should not be about console comparison, all you have to say is "QFT hur hur hurrrrrrrrrrr" and a stupid pointless question you could have solved yourself by doing a liiiittle bit of research. But no, instead you ask us to do it.

MAN

Bird Person: I guess I'm the one that didn't do the research. I thought wired controllers were included with the Arcade, but I just checked and I guess they're not. Which tells me you didn't read my post.

I just gave you a bunch of reasons why you shouldn't just get the Arcade and buy a hard drive later. You'll want to start saving your games and downloading XBLA demos and games right when you get your Xbox, not having a hard drive will suck until you finally get one. Besides, if you're going to spend the money anyway, why not just do it all at once and reap the Xbox 360 Pro benefits?

Having said that, I'm all for you getting an Xbox 360 sooner, which I would guess is why you're so anxious to get the Arcade. I just think it makes sense to go for the Pro.

As for Ethernet, you're going to need to connect to the internet so you can download stuff from the marketplace.

Um, did SB even say either of those in this thread, let alone this month? All of us have made hollow insults around here at some point. Besides, I don't see why SB's disillusionment with Nintendo has to trigger this deep-seeded rage in so many people here. While I don't always agree with him, I do think he's entitled to his opinion, even if it's the near-opposite of your own. Just because this is a Mario forum doesn't mean everyone here has to love Nintendo 100%.

I didn't GTFO Glorb (actually I almost did) because he at least made a somewhat intelligent post. All YOU said was QFT DURR DA HURRR

When I agree with it, apparently.

The difference between you and Glorb is that he didn't attempt to rag on Nintendo and casuals.
In that quote, I was actually ragging on how the Arcade was so blatantly just Microsoft trying to rival the Wii in terms of price and simplicity (and why else do you think the new bundles come with Kung Fu Panda?). Technically, that's a compliment, but it's irrelevant because all I was doing was responding in genuine surprise to something (inaccurate).

I like how you addressed nothing BP said, just like the time I brought up this same problem and you ignored it completely.
Please tell me how I'm supposed to respond to this:

I have reasons for wanting you to shut up ShadowBrain. You never seem to think about anything except "How can I make a remark about Nintendo and the casuals here." It's getting even more frikkin annoying every frikkin day. And I mean, it's not like it wasn't annoying five months ago. Take your copious posts of "qft qft qft qft poty poty poty poty" with you. Don't you ever get bored of whining? I get bored of reading it!!

And what problem are you referring to, anyway? Me being a "Nintendo-hater"? If ever I don't "respond" to those accusations, it's only because I don't want to start the arguements--like the one right now--that you accuse me of igniting.

But hey, America is the Land of Extravagance! Bring it on! Make a $40 remake of Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess with WiiMotion Plus while you're at it!
That's not an insult, that's an exasperated observation. Also, should I be worried you either A) Took the time to go back and compile a series of my questionable posts or B) Have been doing so for months?

There's a difference between saying something once and repeating it again and again over the span of five months.
This is the main thing that really gets me. The last time I recall fashioning an elaborate dissertation on Nintendo's state was right around when Phantom Hourglass came out (then again, I could be wrong, but I'm sure this guy would know). Since, I have consciously limited my frustration with said company to simple jokes and agreements. Like I said, I'm not keeping tabs, but either way it's not a serious issue. Am I only making jokes? Then stop launching a blitzkrieg of flames on me every time I do. Am I repeating it again and again over the span of five months? Then maybe it's because I've been seriously ticked-off by you-know-who for the last two years.

I'm angry because people make pointless replies that don't contribute anything important or intelligent at all.
I can point you in the direction of many, many intelligent posts made by me (a few, in fact, even pertain to my dislike of Nintendo).

I didn't GTFO Glorb (actually I almost did) because he at least made a somewhat intelligent post. All YOU said was QFT DURR DA HURRR
I'm not saying this to try to cover my tail, or anything, but I'd just like to take this time to point out that, before I joined this forum, I had never even heard the term "QFT". I started using it because I thought it was a handy way to signify agreeing with someone. If I'm saying it too much or it's just silently gone out of vogue (like Weegee) and I didn't really notice, then I'll stop.

I basically felt the same way as TEM did.  You sort of tipped it over the edge, and you worded it pretty terribly by basically giving any common titles between the two systems to PS3.

QFT is a pretty useful phrase and is in about as much danger of going out of style as [wtd], and you don't overuse it.

And Weegee is about as funny a meme as Moon Man and Drew Pickles.

I don't care about your track record. I don't care how intelligent (I beg to differ) a few of your previous posts have been. The fact that you're even capable of producing the amount of mindless <censored> I have to shovel through each day to get to the few threads and posts that I actually want to read is enough for me to not care about what you think. You're pretty much red-flagged in my Mental List of People Whose Posts To Not Read.

It's not only you, there are others that I feel the same way about. But you're a big part of it. That's just the way it is.

Yes, QFT has gone waaaay out of style. QFT is so out of style, it never was in style. This applies to Weegee as well.

I'm going to pull the Lizard Dude maneuver and yell about how I don't need to clarify that something is my opinion when that is obviously what is being stated. 360 has a ton of games in which I have absolutely no interest whatsoever. If there are games I want that are on both systems, I'm going to go with the one that has more of the exclusives I am interested in. 360 has a few exclusive games I am interested in. I didn't whine about that. I'll buy a 360 when I feel like playing those games. But I still won't think it has as much awesome.

But why is the PS3 even mentioned in this thread in the first place?  If I see "PS3" one more time in this thread after this post I'm going to SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because of Lizard Dude, actually.

I believe the PS3 discussion was legitimate and acceptable for this thread until Chupperson's first post.

Alright. I'll keep in mind that forums aren't for stating your point of view.
I had actually thought my post could be taken somewhat humorously, but I guess that got lost somewhere.

This is the best thread I've seen on this board in years.

Just to make sure I don't get accused of simply trolling or fueling the fire, I suggest getting Gears of War to impress all your hardcore gamer friends, and so Cliffy B can continue to believe he is God's gift to gaming.

No seriously, I'd say Fable II would be a good choice, as well as downloading Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD remix, though that's just something I'd get if my brother didn't already download it on the PS3.

You can state your point of view on the forums, but I thought your comment was pretty uncalled-for and Sony-fanboy of you, which I deem unacceptable in a thread discussing Bird Person's 360 predicament. And I definitely didn't see any humor. But this roast is about Shadowbrian.

Don't get Gears of War to impress your friends. Get it because it rocks.

Actually, don't get it, because if I recall correctly, hardcore shooters aren't really your (Bird Person's) cup of tea.

I'm not sure about Fable II. I haven't played either one, but I heard Fable was better, so if you're interested, try that one first (it's cheaper!).

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is ridiculous. I'm so bad at it. I know that when I get better it'll be way more fun, but right now I don't have time to invest in that, so I haven't played it in a while.

I would have thought Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Ultra Super Deluxe Boogaloo 20X6 was mainly for Street Fighter II fans, it sounds like a high-definition version of the original.

Surely there are more than enough suggestions for Bird here. Many different responses, maybe confusion on what games Bird is into. If Bird is anywhere near a place where he can rent games, he should try that to make sure he'll like what he chooses.

I'd also recommend Beyond Good & Evil for Xbox (assuming it's compatible with Xbox 360), or looking at other old Xbox games that are compatible with Xbox 360. You've got a good deal of the previous generation you can choose from. I often wish I could dive into PS1 games for my PS2, just to see what I was missing.

Whenever I hear "best thread in years", I think back to the NeoGAF thread where the first commercial was shown for Rayman Raving Rabbids, and people couldn't get enough of the two ridiculous-looking kids in it. Specifically, this picture (http://www.gaming-age.com/previews/wii/rayman_rr/2.jpg). They had a field day Photoshopping the pic to heck.

Oh wow, you took my Gears of War comment at face value.

Honestly though, it shouldn't be that hard to play Street Fighter II by now. The game's been out for 15 years, with multiple rereleases. Most of the characters have very easy specials and combos to pull off, especially compared to later characters and other fighting series. Unless you're playing with the 360's controller, in which case that warrants a "oh u" from everyone.

Clifford Bleszinski does great work, so your facetious comment is pretty much worth its face value, whether you think so or not.

bobman is furthermore correct that Gears does, in fact, rock and Bird Person would probably not, in fact, like it nor be able to partake in its true purpose: online battling or even co-op.

Continuing, your comments on Street Fighter are stunningly ridiculous and utterly n00bly. It shouldn't be hard to be good at because it's been out for 15 years? Then why aren't we all chess masters with Donkey Kong scores over a million? And even more amazingly foolish than that is your relating of how hard it is to "pull off" moves with performing well at the game. If you are still working at making your character do what you want and not on the actual tactical situations developing in the game, you are below even the lowest level of the actual gameplay. Hard moves are a pointless entry barrier to fighters. Smash Bros. understands perfectly and lets you get to the actual playing much quicker than most games. SSFIITHDR should be commended for simplifying the move commands (yet leaving what the move does the same). Saying it's not hard to play because the moves are easy demonstrates you as what you are, Mr. Wiggles: a fool.

360 vs. PS3 is the new PC vs. Mac?

More like the new PC vs. PC.

PC is a pretty innacurate term, really. I mean, that's a "personal computer", right? As in pretty much all computers you can buy at the store, Macs included? (Of course, PC enthusiasts could probably argue the Mac is more of an impersonal computer)

While you're technically correct, Apple doesn't even refer to their computers as PCs, and since ancient times, PC has been used to denote DOS/Windows compatibles, which shoot off of the original IBM PC architecture.

Well, I know that, but I mean that it's like if a PS3 was called a PS3 but the Xbox 360 had no official name and was just called a GC (game console).

PC is the official name. Also 360 isn't (well it actually is) just a generic architecture that's been used by countless companies. All the PCs are based off the IBM PC, which was the brand name. Macs were their own weird architecture until they started using Intel chips. Now they're the same as PCs.

When used in this context, people usually mean the PC as a gaming platform, meaning all discs you can stick into a computer to make funtime. The Mac as a gaming platform usually refers to the absence of said discs.
