I saw a lot of people in Favorite Brawl Control Scheme (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=11399.0) mention using X to jump. That made me think, "You people are crazy! You're supposed to use Y to jump!" Because that's what I do. I use Y to jump.
In this thread, tell me what freakish button you use to jump. Go on, I can take it.

Usually I forget that X and Y are jump buttons and just use up. When I do remember that they do the same thing, I'll start using Y, but then usually forget again once I'm done playing. And yeah, it does seem weird that people would move their thumb over to press X instead of sliding it up to press Y.

X is the button to press because it's the same as a normal jump/attack control scheme then. If you press Y, it's horribly horribly backwards like Mega Man Anniversary Collection.

Y isn't backwards because we're talking about the GC control layout, not SNES. A,B,Y are in a cluster, which means no thumb travel is required. A,B,X are not.

Which one is on the right, X or Y? I pick whichever one is on the right. I keep forgetting. For Wii+Nunchuk, I use C.
P.S. In case it wasn't implied, I'm talking about the Gamecube controller and not SNES.

To MB: I'm talking about any control layout. It's the gesture I make with my thumb to jump that's important. And that gesture is moving, rolling, or nudging microscopically to the right and/or back. On something like SMW for instance since B is jump it's always a thumb gesture of back-right. On NES and Smash, it's more of a straight right motion. This is all done without conscious thought.

Also, you forgot to account for custom controls, as well as the fact that Z is the jump button in the Wii remote + nunchuck layout.

I use X out of habit, but I can see how Y is more efficient. I never used UP.

Um.....Gosh I haven't touched SSBM for i don't know how long, but I think I used the X button...
And since my N64 kicked the bucket and I couldn't get a new one and couldn't play SSB, I managed to get an emulator for it. Since I used the keyboard to play, I always pressed up to jump, but that's a whole different story altogether. Of course, now I'm using my Xbox 360 controller to play my emulators, and I still use up to jump.

You can't jump as far when you use up, because you can't tap up and left/right at the same time. You might argue that you can tap diagonally to jump farther, but it will slow you down when you double jump, to move the analog stick to the top, hence taking the pressure off of your horizontal movement.
If that makes sense.

I hate tapping up. Say I want to perform an upward smash on the ground, but I accidentally do not tap up and press A simultaneously, thus resulting in me jumping. It's annoying! Especially when you're trying to whack opponents out of your way. I stick with X when I want to jump. I used the down C button for jumping back on N64.

After taking a quick look at a gamecube controller, I realize that I actually press the Y button.
I always mix up the X and Y buttons.

Looking at the controller, I've never actually paid attention as to which button I press to jump. It's either X or Y. I'll take a look next time I play Brawl (since I just use the GCN control scheme Melee had, minus 'tap up to jump')

I use X to jump, but often switch between uses depending on the situation that I am in. I find that tapping up works extremely well for launching any aeiral combos that might occur to me in the heat of battle.
I don't think I've ever used Y, as it is in an awkward position.

This statement shows just how much of a giant n00b you are. It is absolutely critical to use the Y button to jump if you want to master the game.

Maybe I can blame loosing all the Brawls I played with MegaByte on my use of the X button to jump, the supposed Wavebird lag, or that defending with L and R requires pushing until the triggers click.
Actually, I think it's simple that I suck, but if I could design my own SSBB controller it would have the Y, X, B, A setup of the SNES controller and bidirectional digital triggers like rocker switches. If I had this controller I wouldn't have to move my right thumb as far too reach the C attacks or the GCN's four buttons. Defend would be pushing in on the rocker shoulder trigger like pulling your hand in front of your face in boxing. And the outside R and L on the rockers would be attacks in those directions.
This setup would be similar to the Classic controller, but with rocker shoulder triggers, and the Y and A buttons closer. I'd rather use the GCN WAVEBIRD because it feels more comfortable in my hands and I prefer controllers with handles for intense games. Not to mention the annoying cord on the Classic Controller.
Even if I had my own custom made controller I'd still probably suck at SSBB and be easily beat by MegaByte.

Defend + A, I'd guess, would be the combo of buttons for grabs (it'd suck to be the people who use Z, though, unless a small extra button is added in the original position complete with same functionality).

Y seems like a reasonable button to press to jump. I do, however, use X. Seems tilting my thumb just slightly to hit the button lightly is easier for me than hitting Y with the tip of my thumb. I can't remember if I used C-left or C-down on the old N64 controllers for the original, but the muscle memory from that stuck with Melee, and into Brawl. Using Up on the joystick never felt right to me, and never will.

I only played Melee for a few hours then gave it to my brother after we (mostly him playing and me watching or telling info from gamefaqs.com) unlocked everything. So, I guess I am a n00b. I'm not really a fan of fighting games, but SSBB is much more than just a fighting game. Subspace alone warrants my purchase.
What about up C attack?
Good question. I'd originally thought about using X, but decided to make that jump. Guess I could use the control stick up for jump and map C up attack to X. Seems my planning here was nearly as poor as my Paint skills. I guess I could try the Classic Control.

Grabbing seems to be harder to do well in Brawl, or maybe I'm just rusty (yes) from not having played regularly in almost four years. The stage outer limits also seem to be wider than many of the Melee stages. But last night I definitely won some games thanks to grab.
To L'son: grabbing is done (best) with Z, the button you decided not to use :-p
For whatever reason, effective grabbing and blocking seem to be things that less experienced Smash players seem to not use/forget about/know about. They're critical in intense fights.

I couldn't remember, so I booted up Melee. I use the X button. I don't use Tap-Up because of the slight delay in jumping from moving the Control Stick up. But that doesn't stop me from using Up for the Smash-Up attack. That might be why: I only use the Control Stick for movement and attacks. I don't use it to jump.
And I'm not a fan of the thread title, since I had to look up "capriole" to figure out what it was referring to. But the title did persuade me to click to find out what it was about.

Thanks. I haven't selected Movies yet. I figured it was just replays of cut scenes I'd already seen.
Since I'm gonna play some Do Re Mi tonight I might give the Classic Controller a try on SSBB. Most pleople here have been discussing GCN controllers. Anyone use a Classic Controller?

I use one, and I think its the best control scheme, I've never really liked the GC controller.

I dislike the classic controller because you have to use the left stick rather than the D-pad for movement, and the button layout is hard to get used to after using GC control for so long. You can't grip it as nicely as the GC control, and it has the stupid tether to the remote (and no rumble).
