I don't know why, but this question popped up into my mind today. Has Mario ever appeared on Non-Nintendo systems? The only instance I could think of was Donkey Kong being released on one of the pre 8-bit systems, the Atari Something. I vaguely remember Mario was supposed to be a hidden character in some basketball game a few years back but I wasn't certain if that game was a mutli-system game or not. I'd also be very interested in any would-be Marios that appear -- you know, Marios that are different enough from the copyright that they can get snuck into games. If there are any.

I'm pretty sure that the 2600 had Mario Bros.
And, despite the pain and suffering we may have to endure by me bringing this up, I must answer with: The Philips CD-i.

Check this site's game list.

Why do I have a feeling someone is going to say "Wait, Fungi Forums has a site?!"
-
The Atari 2600's processor is 8-bit, by the way.

Of course, where else was Mario going to appear in the pre-NES days?
-
There've also been the PC titles like Mario Teaches Typing, a version of Mario is Missing, etc.
The Mario characters in the basketball games were exclusive to the Gamecube version.

TMK does have a pretty good section on this kind of thing.
I found this Allusion the most entertaining: http://themushroomkingdom.net/images/ss/cameo/aoxxl2mlv.jpg (http://themushroomkingdom.net/images/ss/cameo/aoxxl2mlv.jpg)

Imagine that! A site about Mario has a pretty good section about Mario being on Non-Nintendo systems! It's like we live eat and breathe Mario so much that we database each and every appearance, news or information, merchandise, event, and video game feature Mario!
Ok, I'll stop being a jerk now.

Today I realized that the guy on the best boxart ever is wearing Mario clothes kind of. (I know the SNES is a Nintendo system).

Interesting: "Mario's" hat says "Ma," but Luigi's says "Ki." What's with "Ki?" (I would think it would say "Ru," or what I identify as a curly three)

Is that supposed to be a sick joke? Or a real but still wrong game?
-
You never heard of Phalanx?
-
Nope. I didn't really get into video games until the PS1 came out... brings back memories.
-
There was also a GBA port of the game, with completely different box art.
-
Is that banjo player guy in the game in any form? What the hell is his purpose for being on the box?
-
Is that seriously how the SNES boxart for Phalanx is?
It's a shump for crying outloud. I have the GBA port and it's decent.
-
It catches your attention and seems less generic, doesn't it?
-
I guess that's the key to marketing a game to a casual gamer, isn't it?
-
Or the key to marketing to a discerning gamer in a sea of similar games. In the case of side scrolling space shooters, ridiculously similar games.
-
The boxart is definitely a win.
-
I thought it was a reference to Star Trek: Voyager having an old man playing the banjo in its first episode, but I don't think that came out until later.

You just won this topic.

Phalanx - 1992
Voyager: "Caretaker" - 1995

You just won this topic.
Well I definitely hijacked it!
:)
-
The topic, or the spaceship in "Phalanx"? ;)
-
I saw that Phalanx (isn't that the name of one of the Colossi... or some organ?) thing originally in an old EGM where they had some gaming-related burning questions (in this case, "what in the world is up some boxarts?" or something to that effect).
-
Huh. Kemco. Aren't those the same folks that made Top Gear?
But seriously, what the crap?! O_o
