Best: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. It... makes me want to play the game!
Worst: Super Mario Sunshine. Mario looks like a bad person, it has a bunch of hoo-hah about moves and stuff that you can't even read, and on top of all that... it's boring.
-
BEST: Super Mario All-Stars. Mario in a top hat, with plenty of fun in the background.
WORST: I'll have to split my vote again. 60% to Sunshine, for the same reasons as Bird Person, and 40% to I Am A Teacher: Super Mario's Sweater:

-
Best: Super Mario Strikers. The art style makes it look pretty epic.
Worst: Mario Kart Wii. Same boring promotional picture.
-
Best: M&L:SS, PM2, and SM64.
Worst: SMS (WTD is up with the text encircling him?) and MKWii (did LoZ:TP's cover have Link on a white background with his shadow holding a sword? Didn't think so).
-
Best Boxart: Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (Epic)
Worst Boxart: Super Mario Sunshine (Mario has that expression that just screams, "what are you lookin' at, punk?)
-
Best: Paper Mario TTYD. I can't really say anything about it. I just like it.
Worst: Mario Kart DS. Mario Breakdancing(?) on his Kart? What?
-
Best Art: Super Mario Kart. Part nostalgia (even though I never bought the game, I've rented it several times), part giddyness from all the character chaos and the personality of old-fashioned 2D art. It almost looks better than the 3D art of more recent games.
Worst Art: Mario Kart Wii. No background, and the two are just floating there holding Wii Wheels. I just think it's cheap that a character holds a Wii peripheral. Imagine Link holding a Wii Remote to mimic shooting an arrow in Crossbow Training. Or Amaterasu holding the remote like a paintbrush for Okami Wii (with various website logos in plain sight near Ammy's body).
Second-worst would be Super Mario Sunshine, now that I notice the pointless text surrounding Mario.
-
Best: I'm going to go with SMB3 on this one.
Worst that I can think of right now: MKWii.
-
Best: PiT or TTYD
Worst: MKW for the same reasons as Mr. Wiggles and penguinwizard. It's like they didn't even bother to make more concept art that markets the game itself and not the peripheral.
-
It's like they didn't even bother to make more concept art that markets the game itself and not the peripheral.
Well, they certainly never describe their games anywhere beyond what the Wiimote/stylus does.
-
BEST: M&L: Partners in Time. Very nice artwork that makes you want to play the game badly!
WORST: no preference.
-
BEST - Super Mario Bros.- I'm a fan of the pixelated box-art in early NES games.
WORST - Super Mario Sunshine - Mario with FLUDD... how exciting.

Look at the Japanese box art:

Now look at this:

I know this is obviously for American box arts, but... look what we missed out on!
-
Best: Partners in Time. There is just so much going on in that picture that it really makes you want to play it.
Worst: Mario Kart Wii. Read the earlier posts.
-
Best: PM:TTYD. There was even an article about its art at n-sider.
Worst: MKWii, naturally.
-
Best: PM:TTYD. There was even an article about its art at n-sider.
That just reminded me... why was there a whole article about the boxart for that one Chocobo Dungeon game on 1up.com once?
-
Best: SMG
Worst: SMB
-
Best: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. As some people already said, it's actually appealing and makes you want to play the game.
Worst: Mario Kart Wii. Okay. The game is Mario Kart...so where are the karts?!
Also, about Super Mario Sunshine's box art. I can't blame Mario too much for looking kinda ticked off. I mean, the guy did get framed and his vacation ruined. What I find odd is that somewhere in the "pointless text surrounding Mario" it mentions that Mario has more moves. ...Yeah.
-
I think what it's supposed to say is something along the lines of "Mario has more moves than ever. You'll have to master them all to sprinkle water in the sunshine."
-
Which is basically contradictory--all you have to do to sprinkle water in the sunshine is press R. If that's all, then Mario has fewer moves than ever.
-
One thing in the game that's always bothered me is how helpless Mario is without FLUDD. He couldn't even do half of the stuff he could in Super Mario 64. The only new move in Mario's arsenal that doesn't require FLUDD is the spin jump. But considering that he had that in Super Mario World can it really be called new?
-
But didn't it make SMG all the better? When I first played SMG it seemed like such a time warp back to the gameplay of SM64.
-
I'm not going to pick a best in this one (unless all the games I'm about to mention get votes) but I can tell you what the worst one is..
Mario Kart Wii. It's the same art as the box, the same art as the game box, and the same art as the title screen, so you get tired of seeing it before you even play the game. The only good thing about it: They are apprently in karts, as we are not seeing their shadows on the ground, but kart shadows.. and they seem to be wearing their wrist straps properly too, so they don't accidently fling their steering wheel through the tv and injure you.
Now, best boxes.. where to being? M&LSS, Yoshi's Island, Mario Party 8, New SMB, SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMW, SMK, Mario All*Stars, Mario RPG, Paper Marios (that's plural!), Mario Party.. there are just too many to mention, really.
Also, I nominate best/worst caslte/Bowser music.
-
Super Mario World's North American box pales in comparison to the Japanese one.
-
Pretty much all American boxarts pale in comparison to Japanese ones (Shiren the Wanderer, anyone?).
-
I wouldn't say that for some games. EarthBound, Kirby: Canvas Curse and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga all got new, more exciting box art for the U.S.A. I'd say it's because we judge books by covers, or games by boxes.
-
Don't forget Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
-
Wait, didn't Superstar Saga come out in America first?
-
Best: Yume Koju: Doki Doki Panic - Dream Factory because it has more doki action! (I actually own the FDS disk mint)
Worst: Wario's Woods because it brings me that 199's prime time feeling. (It seems after Gumpei Yoko died Nintendo lost lots of quality.

It seems after Gumpei Yoko died Nintendo lost lots of quality.
His name is actually Gunpei Yokoi, but whatever. Close enough.
Anyway, best box art was Mario Galaxy, only because it's the first to feature Mario in space...I think. Maybe a Mario Party box did the same thing, but I don't care. Mario Galaxy box art rules.
-

Virtual Boy says "Hi"
-
Virtual Boy is fun. You've never played one so you wouldn't know.
Gunpei Yokoi died after he was fired from Nintendo.
-
Yeah the Virtual Boy is fun. Just because a system flops after a few games doesn't mean it doesn't have fun stuff on it.
-
And so...the results!

I want to play one of those someday...
-
They should totally put the VB on the VC. Also, where's my fraction of a vote for I Am A Teacher: Super Mario's Sweater?
-
Gunpei Yokoi died after he was fired from Nintendo.
He wasn't fired.
-
He quit?

I'm gonna be scarred for life if I get this wrong but,
Is that even a game?
-
Yes.
-
I want pictures.

-
Oh, that.
-
I want to play one of those someday...
Most of the games don't take advantage of the "virtual reality" except Telero Boxer (which is one of my very favorite boxing games, to this day. I even like it more than Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!)
But there's a lot of really good games regardless such as Mario's Tennis, VB Wario Land, Galactic Pinball, and Panic Bomber among others.

What
-
Anyone ever seen the Angry Video Game Nerd video about the Virtual Boy? It shows every game that was released for it except Jack Bros.
-
That's kind of why I liked the Chronicle in SSBB. It was a good way to see what all the Nintendo-published VB games were.
-
What
The whole "virtual reality" effect that the Virtual Boy was meant to bring.
Anyone ever seen the Angry Video Game Nerd video about the Virtual Boy? It shows every game that was released for it except Jack Bros.
I've seen it.
-
Best: SMG, it screams "Fun". (I'm glad they changed it at the last second)
Worst: MKW. I agree, it is boring. I remember checking the Nintendo site out the day it was revealed and seeing the exact same pic.
And for anyone who says MKDS, I disagree. It has that coolness look too it.
-
I've never played Virtual Boy. Just puting that out there.
